Google Shutting Down Wave

Google are axing Wave due to insufficient usage - from the blog:
But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily “liberate” their content from Wave.
Doesn't really surprise me, I don't think the Internet was ready for something like that, though I can sort of see what they were trying to do.

I never used it beyond an initial poke because I never felt it offered me anything I didn't really have already, though I know a few people here were using it occasionally?

wave was no good;

too slow, couldnt cope with multiple users, was difficult to navigate;

maybe it worked better with a smaller dedicated group

qgl wave was a nitemare

This is a touch disappointing, but as trog said - Not entirely unexpected. We still use it fairly heavily at work for various things, clearly we're in the minority however.

This is what happens when you stretch a javascript application to it's limits. It ran like an absolute dog.

THat was one of the limitations we noticed, yes. Once a wave got to a certain size & you had 7 or 8 people editing multiple bits of it, the thing would randomly die, lose changes or do other weird things.

I never even looked at it. I'm not about to lock up my information in a proprietary Google application

Wave was a cool toy, but that was about it. I do like how the wave technology is in other things like Google docs etc so you can see real-time editing of spreadsheets etc.

I'm glad they'll provide tools to get content out, I'm going to frame qgl wave and put it on my fridge.

I'm a big google fan, and I tried wave, but it just wasn't useful for anything that I did. I'm not overly surprised by this news.

I tried using it as a remote collaboration tool, but we had no end of problems understanding how we could do things, whether other things were possible etc etc, so it kinda just died.

I like that Google tries and is happy to let something fail and cannibalize it for other apps.

There were none. It was a bad attempt to get into the social networking world.

I can see that there could of been some minor uses in rare cases, but obviously not enough to keep it alive.

I think social networking was an after thought.

I thought it was more a go at something like SharePoint and the whole collaboration thing rather than social networking.
