ok, mate of mine has got himself a media centre, which he would prefer to use windows 7 on.

unfortuneately windows 7 doesnt like something hes got installed and crashes the media centre, freezes up and generally doesnt work propperly

we've done a ram test, all good:

everything seems to work fine under vista

tv tuner card is Hauppauge HVR 2200, which i coudlnt find any known issues with win7

any ideas on whats doin? have we missed something?

im a little suss on windows 7 installing mobo drivers, but my install seems to be fine, so i dunno;

hes got no issues in his device manager.

I'd try without the TV tuner for a bit (use the pictures, videos, etc) and see if it stops causing problems. Also get the Media Browser plugin and Shark007 codec for all your ISO needs.

Conflict with codecs? I've had ffdshow crash my PC a few times due to conflicts between it and other programs.

its all intel made hardware these days, paying for the mac symbol basically means they've taken the time to research which hardware works really well together and all the drivers just work every time

mac mini for $900~ = awesome DVR with hdmi out and does 1080p no worries
fire up plex on it (only runs on osx) and you've got the best media center around imo

Install the latest one then, 9.1.1.1020.

we've done a ram test, all good:
With?

More detail on the crashes, freezes and what doesn't work properly.

when running the rc, he did manually install all drivers
So why not go and install the latest ones now? Stumped as to why you wouldn't do this in the first place...

Spook -

I got 2 x HVR-2200 in my Media Centre, its been running WIN7 RTM since August and no problems at all.

I'm running a DFI GF9400 Mobo with Intel E7400, 4Gb RAM, 4 x 1.5Tb HDD and LG HDDVD/Blu Ray.

It runs rock solid. If you are getting crashes/lock ups I would go a reinstall of Win 7. If the system came preloaded then definitely reload. It takes around 30minutes to reload from scratch so it will save you a lot of time trying to trouble shoot drivers etc.

The HVR2200 drivers from windows update are good, I'd be downloading mobo/graphics drivers from manufacturer though.

Only Codec/apps you need to add to Win 7 Media Center is ffdshow tryouts and Haali spliter. If you are running a Blu-Ray then Total Media Center Platinum 3.0 is the only program I would consider.

Other excellent add-ons that add to the media center experience.

Media Browser - Use this for Tv Shows/Videos, its free and looks awesome
Media Center Studio - Allows you to configure the menu layouts and apply themes to Media Center
Big Screen EPG - allows you to import custom EPG data into Media Center and add logos to channels(the EIT data is shit).
MC Standby Tool - Give you control over all the standby features of Win7/Vista.
DVRMS Toolbox - strip the adds from your recorded shows, this is not easy to setup but once its running its great.

If you are using Win7 then yes by far.....the integration with Windows 7 means you hardly notice that you left Media Center. It definitely the top Blu-Ray playback option available at the moment. That said I don't tend to use it a lot, I usually rip and encode my blu-rays to store them on the HDD. Saves space and my kids usually trash disks. Takes about 2 hrs to rip the Blu-Ray and 6-8hrs to encode it on my 64bit i5 system.

I've almost given up on 7 MCE.

I think it's because I run 64bit. I have to get 64 bit drivers which screw up a bit and I've been noticing the dreaded windows slow down more and more lately. You know, the more you do/play the slower it runs after time. My desktop running 7 and my laptop media centre has been getting slower and slower.

I might, as Ticman suggested, put on 32bit 7 on the MCE and see how it goes. The annoying thing is it took me a lot of screwing around to get it to run HD well, then it just started getting choppy etc.

Yep screw 64-bit MCE, it's too much hassle. I junked it and put 32-bit, Shark007 codecs and bought CoreAVC (US14.95) and haven't looked back.

I've written a guide for AusGamers about building a 1080p capable media center with the Asrock ION330 and XBMC. Total cost for me was $510.

I think it will get posted sometime next week.
