xp 32bit no recognizing ram

I have just been given 2gb of 800mhz ram for free and it works fine. I already have 2gb ram in my pc and after installing this new ram xp wont recognize more than 2.31gb ram. I thought that it could see more than that on a 32 bit system? like 3.2gb or something?

how big is your video card memory? Device memory takes huge chunk under 32-bit.

wow, people still don't know about xp's limitation?

basically, you're limited to 3gb in TOTAL that the OS can recognise

nah tequila that's not true.

It can access up to 4gig, by default 2gig is user addressable space and can be expanded to 3gig

It's a 32bit limitation, not XP.

I thought that 32 bit operating systems had a limitation of 3.2GB of RAM.

Have a look in your bios for the Memory Remap feature and make sure it is enabled.

It can technically address 4GB but upper chunks are reserved for device memory and its USUALLY around 3.2gb user addressable, the rest reserved for accessing devices.

so haven't read articles yet but

xp 32bit with sp3 can use 4gb without any problems
vista sp1 can also support 4gb without any problems

anymore than this it wont recognise it

windows 7 32 bit can see and use my whole 8gb without a problem.
so much for limitations in 32bit.

with xp and vista i need to use 64 bit. windows 7 i can use 32 however since the beta came out ive been using 64.

Shoddy

after reading a bit that is not correct, it's telling you how much ram you have, not how much your system is using which at the absolute max is 3.2gb on a 32Bit system. But I still cant figure out why mine will not go over 2.3gb I should be able to get more than that.

how are you measuring how much ram is being seen
on your my computer properties page?

when you say its only seeing 2.3g of ram, you're not talking about much ram is being used in task manager are you?

lol
3.2 is pretty typical given the number of devices that need addressing in your average system atm - but no, 3.2 is not the absolute max

a single cpu, vista ultimate or xp pro (non serve editions) 32bit. Read those links yet that explain all of this?

your sentences don't really make sense to me
first you asked:
Whats the max you can have in a 32 bit home system jim? those links say otherwise.
they say otherwise to what exactly?
the max you can use without PAE is 4gb minus the address space required for your devices

a single cpu, vista ultimate or xp pro (non serve editions) 32bit. Read those links yet that explain all of this?
yeh they're pretty clear on exactly how much memory you can use for each of those os's - 4gb for both, with the following caveat also quoted from the same msdn article:

Limits on memory and address space vary by platform, operating system, and by whether the IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE value of the LOADED_IMAGE structure and 4-gigabyte tuning (4GT) are in use. IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE is set or cleared by using the /LARGEADDRESSAWARE linker option.

Limits on physical memory for 32-bit platforms also depend on the Physical Address Extension (PAE), which allows 32-bit Windows systems to use more than 4 GB of physical memory.

ok now this is confusing the hell out of me, so basically a 32 bit OS can't 'truly' use the whole 4GB but tricks programs into thinking there is 4GB available with the PAE?
As far as I understood 3.2gb (3.0GB in some cases for devices) is the true limit, but this still does not solve the problem I am having with 2.3GB available and usable under XP Pro 32 bit when it should be in the 3.0BGB - 3.2GB area. My graphics memory is only 512MB and I'm using a gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 motherboard.

no you don't need PAE to use 4gb of memory

I don't know what your 2.3gb issue is, I was never replying to that issue - I was replying to the crazy memory limitation comments about 32 bit systems that seem to fly around everytime a thread of this nature pops up

a single cpu

Most systems these days are dual core, which while a single physical package is actually not a single processing unit. So when you say single cpu do you mean 1 core, 2 cores, 4 cores ? ... or SMP multi core boxes ?
