Covert YouTube

Okay, so quite often at work I find myself wanting to watch a clip of whatever while I continue to do work. Problem is, YouTube is browser based, and whenver I go to do something else, obviously that comes to the front.

I guess what I want is a dedicated client which its sole function is to pull down YouTube videos in an embed, and will float on top, with no other crap around the window. ie, it's a YouTube video that's as small as can be (like mplayer2) and has stay-on-top functionality.

No, miro won't do this (and is too big).

Ideas?

Worst case I could write it, it would just be a simple WinForms app with a HTML component.

Couldn't you do this with a simple firefox addon + media player? Unless what you're after is a minimalistic program that searches youtube and displays the video on whatever player selected. Like a google search box stuck ontop of whatever your favorite player is.

Possibly, but I use Chrome. But again if someone knows of a FF plugin, fire away.

This is not what you're after but a) it's Mac OS X so might be of interest to you anyway and b) it's fucking cool :

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7025

Basically, Picture-in-picture firefox extension that lets yuo play youtube videos in a little window that persists across your tabs

Spoke too soon, damn thing doesn't work with Chrome, worked on every other bloody window I tried it on though.

Duct tape an iPhone 3G to the corner of your monitor.

I just got a new Garmin EDTE 705 GPS which is sitting beside my desk charging, don't suppose that might do the job? :P
(completely ignoring the iPod classic sitting next to it)

Install Prism then use your "Always on Top" program to keep it on top.

install videolan, firefox and a video downloader plugin. Save the video while you're doing work (or save hundreds of them) then queue them up in a playlist in VLC and set it to be always on top. Bonus points if you write an automated download script that saves every youtube video on earth during the night so they're available to watch the next day.

Yep, was going to say this. Just get one of the many plugs or programs that give an easy way to download the .flv file... then just use VLC to play them.

You might as well duct tape it to your wang and have a wang shaking contest.

Get a second monitor, and have the browser open on that monitor while you're working on the primary one.

RealPlayer sort of does this.
Highlight what you want to dl and it builds a list that you can view now or later offline.
