MSDN is a developer program where you pay an annual fee and get a bunch of OSes and apps with the general limitation of being licensed to use them for dev purposes only.
This is significantly cheaper than retail licenses. The MSDN licenses are also widely abused for production / private use :)
I know what MSDN is but is there any actual difference between the operating systems you get from there other than price as you mentioned? I guess they bypass all that activation crap or something? If not, what's the appeal?
Could you just use a normal vista retail disc with your key mooby?
All the msdn software you download is the same as the retail in terms of features but it has a cd-key built into the installation which is unique to your msdn subscription. So it requires no activation etc. and when you go to install it, the cd-key is already filled out with your key.
as far as i know there identical, so i guess a retail v would work. cant dl a new one, im having trouble logging in, and uk support isnt open :@. just wanted to do an install over teh break.
Yeah, sounds like it works for retail but not OEM I think, I would curse having bought an OEM copy instead of a retail, but 2 OEM copies are still cheaper than one retail... so yeah.

I got burned by OEM stuff with XP. Once you activate it, it's tied to your hardware and if you change too many things you need to re-activate. After 3 XP was nuked and you had to ring MS. I *think* you get as many activations as you like with vista retail so long as each activation is more than 120 days apart or something.
Humm, if you're a legit MSDN member then why don't you just download it? I know it'll burn up your quota but hey aren't you downloading Linux ISO's anyway???
im having trouble logging in, and uk support isnt open :
He can't log in and support aren't open. I'm thinking maybe he registered it in the UK so it'll only let him log in from IP addresses coming from there? Do they do that sort of thing?
