So anyway back on topic...
We are now learning Flash Actionscripting in ITS at school (the programming one)
Its ok i guess.. but i think they are getting desperate with stuff to teach us.. or maybe they are just giving us a wider view of whats available and what ya can do out there.
Either way.. its more fun helping the teachers teach the grade 12's :p

cept SD3 which is C++
SD3 is by no means first year.
Also, i don't see why learning C or C++ would be a disadvantage when learning java first year of uni? C++ and Java are both object oriented languages and to a great extent the syntax for both is similar. Obviously they have differences but if anything it would be an advantage to know another language no matter what you were studying.
Java, however, is the most easiest oo language that exists tho and is a piece of piss to learn. Even the most complicated structures are made simple with java. Language is just so easy to read and follow.
EDIT: Also when i did SD3 it was C not C++ ... it may have changed since then.

SD3 is now C Sharpe (or however u spell it)
but yeah, learing the fundamentals of Object Oriented Programing would have been really useful in Highschool, but i think if ppl learn C++ rushed in one semester of gr 12, then when they get around to doing java theyll screw it up a lot more than someone coming in with a fresh slate - this would also probably be cause theyd think they know everything already and would act all egotistical...
edit: and java may be easy, but formal specs suck balls, and so do arrays, sets and sequences (well they may actually be very useful, just our lecturer cant seem to get it across to us on how to use them outside his own twisted programs) /end rant

Thats stupid. SD3 wasnt about OOP, it was about advanced structures like lists, binary trees and m-way trees. Learning C# should be one of the very last things you do at uni.

In IPT we learnt a semester of access, a semester of AI, a semester of pascal + Delphi and a semester of specifications (over 2 years duh grade 11 - 12). I'm not saying that everyone should learn a object oriented language at school but i think if they don't have an interest in learning one they should not choose Software Dev as a major.
Some people can learn without a lecturer dictating to them, some can't. The ones that can't will be shit programmers unless they learn to ahem learn themselves.
But any programming at all is extremely useful. Learning the syntax, semantics of any language would be a huge help for someone going into first year. Just because you get it wrong doesn't mean you haven't learnt something. When it comes time to learn it properly, you will see your mistakes and learn a shitload more. Egotistcal because they know an OO language? To be honest if someone has that attitude they are going to fail no matter what.
edit: and java may be easy, but formal specs suck balls, and so do arrays, sets and sequences (well they may actually be very useful, just our lecturer cant seem to get it across to us on how to use them outside his own twisted programs) /end rant
Formal Specs have absolutely nothing to do with java. You will need to learn them no matter what language you do. Java is probably the BEST language to learn all this shit because you don't sit there for hours trying to figure out what your method does... Simple and Concise. Its all stepping stones. Start with something easy and move onto something harder....
Are you at uni yet? If so what year? And what will be your major?
I did the double major (DC and Software Dev). Finished last year.

heh, its not quite "the cisco thing". Data comms is about Networks, Network technologies and how they interact in the real world to give the internet and other shit.
BUT it is boring unless you like that sort of thing. All the exams are memory based. If you can memorize the lecture notes or pracs you'll ace it. Thats what sucks. Not enough practical and too much theory.
On the other hand, without knowing the theory, you won't understand the practical side of it. I just think that there was way too much theory when i did it. Hopefully it will be changing for the better.
mmm.. whats an "Object Orientated Language"?
You mean an example? C++ and Java are obvious examples of OO languages. C is NOT.

yeah chod - at uni this year, first year gpa of 4.5 atm, we'll see what that changes to after this semester cause im looking at two 6's atm...but yeah, was looking at doing the dual DC/SE but to tell the truth i hate programming, i can do most basic shit with programming, but the harder stuff gets too frustrating (altho yeah, i know i have to do advanced programming for most subjects) but yeah
im prolly gonna end up doing a new major called Emerging Tech. and its name really isnt a good indication of what is involved, its more like learning the basics from the other majors then picking the most direct route to what u wanna do in IT instead of doing all these other subjects u dont really want to know about (and dont anticipate needing to know)
and object oriented programming is basically programming with objects, that can be altered and given all types of attributes and stuff <- thats a very basic overview tho

This emerging tech major sounds like it has promise!
Itd be great for people who dont really want to devote to one major. Thats why i did CDC so i could have something to fall back on. Worked 3 months in DC and got bored... now working in SD and enjoying it so far.
Software isnt everyones cup of tea and im of the opinion you need to think a certain way to completely understand it or atleast not have to work hard at it...

yeah, im sure that if i really had to apply myself to SD then i could do fairly well in it, but with so many other options it just doesnt hold much appeal to me, but i can still do the parts id like to do with emerging tech cause it gives u 10 electives which u can devote to any block 2 subjects (SD3, the basic networking ones etc), plus lets u do any certification courses as an elective as well - so basically i could complete an MCSE test for office or something and get the full credit for one elective with it

oh, and while ive remembered (was meant to post this in one of my last two ^_^) our intro to networking subject this semester had a hell of a lot of prac work involved...yes it just installing configuring win2k/linux and comparing them etc but was still prac work and used A LOT in the cisco exam we just had to do for the same subject
did u also have this in first year and then no pracs from there on? or are they starting to change what they teach

We had that sort of prac in some of the DC subjects. We never got to play with routers (not real ones.. virtual ones yes)
In one subject (a really good one.. ill look up the code for you later) we got to install 2k server, 2k a.server and put them all in a AD structure. That was good experience.. second year sometime..
I think we only had those sorts of pracs in 3 - 4 subjects out of 10 data comms subjects. I think, however, it was changing for the better. I got it JUST as it was changing. We were doing a lot of stuff the last class wasnt and youll be doing lots we didnt. So its constantly improving.

Although i never did any Cisco related stuff through uni. I did a bit outside of uni but not IN the course. However if you had the money, they had a end of year 4 week Cisco CCNA course which pretty much bottle fed you through the entire course and got you your certs.
I, ofcoarse, didnt have the money. :)

ahh ok kool - well yeah, we only did it on virtual machines running in linux but was still very good for ppl who hadnt done it before - specially the later ones like setting up ftps, telnet etc (well in linux anyways, - hadnt done that before)
but yeah, its good to see change, as ill be doing a fair few DC subjects, without the more obscure ones that dont really follow onto anything, not sure whatll make up the rest of my course yet tho - havnt really looked at any subjects yet :S

and the cisco course we did wasnt for any certs or anything, it was just there really basic introduction to networking that we had running along side the win2k/redhat pracs and ended with a 56 MC question online exam that everyone i know went really well in - so it was more just to fill up the rest of the subject, save having to find/make up some sort of networking assignment worth 35%

yeah, we did sql databases and stuff in another subject last semester - ended up being more about writing the actual sql queries tho - was pretty easy, the exam with all complete unrelated ms access vb coding wasnt fun tho (we had learnt some access, but not to the degree we were tested)
u also needed to know some theory on transactions and the like but yeah - easy to learn
