Last night I started to receive some texts (4 in total so far) from people saying they saw my car for sale on gumtree and if I could email them the details of it. Each of these texts have come up with names but no numbers and all 4 have different email addresses they want me to reply too (gmail, yahoo etc). Has anyone had this happen to them and how do they manage to text someone and not have a number come up on screen?
Yeah my partner gets these now and then too, just ignore them unless you actually have a car for sale.
Tell them to direct debit the deposit and change your phone number
Ok trog, the messages I received last night is as follows -
Kindly confirm to me the price and condition of your CAR placed on advert.Email me the details on email@example.com
Just saw your AD now on gumtree,do you still have it for sale?email me on firstname.lastname@example.org...hope to read from you soon.
I had actually deleted the first two thinking they were miss texts.
Just received another one from a "Lori".
I never get weird calls or texts like this except the odd indian caller trying sell me insurance who I always hang up on. I would imagine though that since you obviously havn't put your car up on gumtree then you should consider them scams.

Someone posted a scam with your number and now plenty of gullible people want you? just reply asing for a link to the ad to confirm their authenticity.
But what I can't understand is how they can text me and a name and not a number shows up. I actually went to gumtree and did a search but my number didn't come up. I wonder if its linked somehow to the pay me $5000 or you're dead scam?
yep we had that with wifes car. there was an old thread about this.
Nothing comes up when I did a search of my number. I've just also received a call from a listed number asking about my car being for sale. When I asked him make and model he hesitated for a bit then replied a Nissan (I don't own a Nissan). I've searched gumtree and my number doesn't come up anywhere there.
But what I can't understand is how they can text me and a name and not a number shows up.
This is very, very easy with an SMS gateway, seriously if you PM me your number I'll send you one in 5 minutes lol. What would concern me is where they got your number.
It's a scam, I get this very often when I advertise on gumtree, Just ignore them.
I don't think replying is a good idea skythra. That confirms that you are receiving the messages and then you'll probably receive more.
Ah yeah, good point.
Whats the first 4 digits of your number ? I'll have a look on gumtree now
I get these on my iphone sometimes (the name) because its usually an imessage sent to me via their email account.
cam we still send sms's through facebook?
