at or with.

Edit: just to be clear, when using black humor, you should be indemnified. When the setup was already joking about the tragic event, it's not his fault that he nailed the punchline.

oh, i agree it was funny, but as a politician who actually feeds off the 'stop the boats' stuff, was probably not the best move.

Meh, other people have been making jokes about it all over already. As skythra said, he was just responding to a joke already setup by the reporter.

Much prefer his response to some sort of slick, politically-correct feigned horror at the question.

imo, the only valid response from a political figure on a question like that should have been something along the lines of "People died, that's not appropriate".

There's no need for feigned horror or disgust or anything over the top, but cracking a joke about a recent tragedy, whether he set it up or not, is really not behavior fitting of a world leader.

In other news, people are so bored that they pay attention to everything and hype it so it makes them look like they have an opinion worth hearing.

...I actually like the guy better for not being a boring pompous dick about it.

Everyone else needs to harden the fuck up.

It's super ultra unbearably lame because his only real intention is likely beating up what was long ago established to be a bullshit political issue with the goal of milking it a little more.

Basically politicians are incapable of being funny. Their attempts at being so are nearly always facepalm-worthy attempts at "clever" political jabs, and whenever I hear one it feels like nails on a chalkboard from somebody who just cannot deliver humour. Their jokes, to clever humour, are as the singing is to talent in this scenario...

He seems to have a habit of doing this... wasn't it Tony Abott that, when asked about soldiers dying in Afghanistan/Iraq etc, "shit happens"?

On one hand, it's good that he's not just another drone reading off an immaculately prepared script, but as has been said, it's probably not the best thing to say, light-hearted or no.

I think he needed to follow up with, "What!?...too soon?" and it would have been fine.

Nope. He didn't say that. Channel 7 once again grabs a bit of footage, edits it and takes things out of context. He wasn't saying "shit happens" to soldiers dying.

I found tony abbots joke very tactful.
