School in Toronto bans "hard balls" like soccer/tennis balls

Think of the children, yo! Saw this on Slashdot and thought it was pretty funny and depressing - a school in Toronto is banning balls after an incident where a parent was allegedly concussed by a soccer ball:
The happy days of kicking a ball around at recess ended Monday after students took home a letter advising that henceforth, no child could bring a soccer ball, football, volleyball or even tennis ball to the junior and senior school in the area of Coxwell and Danforth Aves.

The letter stated that there have been a “few serious incidents” in which staff and students have been hit, or come close to being struck, by flying balls. From now on, only Nerf balls or sponge balls can be brought to school.
Now, it's been a while since I was at school, but I assume Australian schools still aren't for pussies and kids play cricket with a real cricket ball, right?

I can imagine, sort of, banning real hard balls like cricket and baseballs - I think it would be utterly stupid and pointless and do more harm to kids in the long term. But soccer balls? VOLLEY BALLS? How many people are concussed by soccer balls every year?

What the fuck. A soccer ball in the face is character building.

Do we have a link to the source article? Don't want to trawl /. at work but wouldn't mind a read.

Turning kids into soft pussies more everyday.

Even when i was coaching cricket in primary school we were using real cricket balls.

I had the 7/8/9's playing dodgeball yesterday with soccerballs (lack of resources).. kids need the risk of pain every now and then when playing. Otherwise they turn into crying messes everytime something 'stings'.

And Canadians wonder why the world makes fun of them. Utterly retarded decision. I've fielded close to the bat plenty of times and I didn't suffer permanent injury.

Soft, not only is the ban for accidental hits stupid, kids should be encouraged to deliberately throw balls at each other.

Brandy and dead duck are the best games for childhood.

In fact the teachers favourite game that they forced everyone to play in primary school was "bin ball", which was basically dodge ball with soccer balls.

There was a School in QLD that banned Cart-wheels and a few other activities like that a few years ago. From what I'm told (by my PE Teacher Mother, who thinks it's stupid) the ban still stands.

After I left my first high school this fat chick copped a footy to the head and it knocked her out. She got up on assembly to give a speech about it apparently.
I wasn't there for that, but previously the same girl had tripped over and knocked herself out on the concrete right in front of me. It looked so slow and fake I just stood there pointing and laughing at her, not realising she was unconscious.
Some people just go unconscious a lot.

O Canada,
You're now a laughing stock,
Like your south neighbour, killing off all the fun.
How a volley ball could cause harm to kids
When they don't wear cotton wool
But now you're scared,
O Candada, that you will graze your knee!
Please keep our laws safe from beaurocracy,
O Canada, beware you'll graze your knee,

Although, we did manage to get "follow the leader" banned at Kedron High School back in the day. The teachers got sick of noticing 15 or so kids in a tight line behind them as they walked around the school.

Hey hey, this is the country that once upon a time bought you Nickelback but more recently could only bring These Kids Wear Crowns.

Unfortunately I seem to be one of those people since about 2007. I went up for a header in football, the guy tunneled me and I landed full weight on my head. Out like a light. Since that it takes nothing to knock me out. Had a little love tap this year after getting a shove, hit my head on the ground (not even hard), lights out.

Bashball will and always will be the ultimate fighting / ball skills / individual game.

The Rules are as follows:
- One Tennis ball / Cricket Ball / Golf Ball / Whateverthefuck Ball you want
- Unlimited Players (No Girls)
- Played against anything with a big hard wall. There can be obstacles on the court including girls.

Objective:
The ball is thrown against the wall and another person has to catch it on the full. You cannot catch it twice in a row. If you drop it or are deemed not to attempt to catch it when you could have, the entire rest of the game can punch or kick you until you get to the back or front wall (Specified before the game). The ball used for the game can also be thrown at you, but no other object can be thrown. There is no punching or kicking the dropper in the head.

Winner:
No-one wins, if you were a madkid and had good skills you went up front and caught the ball and bashed other kids. Would make a great watch if UFC fighters played.
