Wherever to airport on airtrain $5ish

Is this scam well established?

Buy a go card for $10 that includes $5 "deposit"

Use your go card as per usual until the balance is under $1.

Place in a drawer until you go to airport...

Touch on wherever, touch off and go to negative 14ish

Bin the go card?

I just did it then for the ultimate win

A better one would be figuring out how to get a really cheap student card to save me a few thousand dollars a year in public transport costs.

Then please explain to me how the things get built in the first place because the government sure as hell can't afford them? So we do without the tunnels and suffer? Naw, ill take the alternative thanks. This is the same argument that every person throws about the tunnel infrastructure. The airport link is a perfect example, a private endeavour commissioned for building by anna bligh and her cronies when she was in power. Imagine if the state government had paid for that! We'd be even more f***ed than we are now.

The Clem7 is great, you can get to the other side of town in a few minutes. Paying a few dollars to avoid waiting 20 minutes in traffic is worth it.

I've used the airport link a few times. If you're by yourself and in no rush it's pretty good - chance at Roma Street and a few more stops on Beenleigh line and I'm home.

But get a few peeps going and it's basically cheaper to split a cab.

With the new airport link tunnel I can get from my place (annerley) to the airport with only 3 sets of lights (and 2 small sets which are always green). Pretty damn good really but once the tolls kick it it becomes and expensive trip BUT some of that cost is offset in petrol savings and general wear and tear (obviously not enough to cover the full toll cost though).

In regards to OP. The deposit is supposed to cover the negative but once you touch on you can go on as long as your journey will take you to touch off so the scame makes sense. I noticed tonight I was not charged for my trip and it was my 10th trip on the bus this week. I think it must be that scheme that Campbell Newman brought in recently?

^ yeah after 10 trips you get free travel.

There was the story, of the real tight arses that live in the outskirts that travel into the city, taking buses in their lunch time for small trips in the city to rack up the 10 trips and then getting free trips (the longer more expensive trips) for the remaining work days.

There'll always be people scamming the system, like ole mate Persay!

The reason why the tunnels fail is because the tolls are too expensive.

If it only cost $1-$2 you wouldn't even think about it but at $5 most people start doing the numpty maths and work out that it starts to add up.

I use the tunnels if I need to travel during peak hour and I'm in a hurry ... otherwise I can't justify the rape.

public transport is awesome.

i use the train for all my city meetings. easy trip in with a bit of a snooze or some emails on the iPad in the wifi carriage, then repeat on the way home. $7 ew.

alternative for me is 1-2 hrs in traffic, totally unproductive, upwards of $40 parking, 1-2 hrs home, plus fuel and wear and tear. bulls***!

also great for footy games, free!

public transport is great in the right circumstances

Public transport on the coast is the worst thing ever because of the funny way our city is laid out. It's population centre Southport and CBD Surfers Paradise are at the top, with the population tapering down the further south you get. There are also a few satellite suburbs such as Nerang and Robina which manage to keep the population as spread out as possible. Getting a bus to work from one of less populated suburbs like Ashmore or something must be a f*****g nightmare. It is pretty much unpossible to survive without a car. They are building some light rail thing at the moment it will be interesting to see how that goes. I know it is cool to be pessimistic about new infrastructure but I like to at least hope it will be successful and make the drive through Broadbeach and Surfers a bit easier.

Only time I use public transport are taxies and the train up to the airport if I need to catch a plane. Last trip cost me something like $36 or something. Total rip-off but the delivery right to the terminal is hard to pass up.

i had the misfortune recently to have to catch public transport (the train).

it was horrible for the following reasons:

1) the cost (over $10 a day) (the petrol i buy for the price of a week of public transport, would last me a month)
2) the inconvenience (long walk to the train station, had to run from station i got off to work (this wasnt so bad, i wouldnt mind running regualrly, except then i have to shower at work)
3) it was school holidays and the train was still crowded
4) the time it takes, compared to driving. i drive to work its like 15 minutes, i catch the train, it adds 50 minutes each way to my trip. my time is precious.

any time we fly anywhere now, we just drive and use one of the parking services at the airport, cheap, they will clean your car if you like and its way cheaper than cabs, or catching the train and we dont have to bug our friends for lifts

I have a fulltime card which expires in 2015 but when i read into the setup - you either need a uni that prints the QR or QT logo on your student card otherwise you need to apply for a special approved student transport card from QT.

I'm planning to start taking the train to work from due to moving office inner city but wasn't sure if i should go get a student go card and run it until i get warned

tight arses ITT

the draconian translink fares kind of encourage it though

over here it is a flat $3 fare anywhere in the city, and a monthly card pays for itself after 40 trips or so - almost makes it not suck to be without a car

Honestly, I don't rate public transport but I respect the initative. The cost of it is the main reason why I don't bother. My car is cheaper even if the frustration of traffic adds a slight amount of time/annoyance some days.

The prices are a massive turnoff.

(PS: the cost of taxi's are redic, but that's another story)

On the flipside here in Amsterdam I wouldnt be able to get into work without public transport. It really is setup well over here and you get subsidised as well so you don't pay anything. Public transport really is the way to go for that mundane communiting travel. Having to drive around everyday in Australia was a bit of a pain like to Uni or work.

fyi, the few times i've taken the airtrain, the station staff have been pretty eagle eyed about people not touching off, to prevent this happening

Yeh, you can't really comment on public transport (I reckon) without having been to a city where they have nailed it. Paris, London, Berlin, Munich (probably everywhere in Germany) ... once you go there and get around it is just so awesome.
Then please explain to me how the things get built in the first place because the government sure as hell can't afford them? So we do without the tunnels and suffer? I don't really have a problem with private investment in infrastructure, other than I think it should be the job of the government to provide it and it irritates me when a private company can obtain a complete government-supported monopoly on something as critical as core infrastructure. Well, I guess I have a bit of a problem with it.

I would REALLY have a problem with is the government doing anything to prop it up after they've discovered their business model has failed. I don't know what is happening with the RiverCity Motorway Group - the mob that owns the Clem7 tunnel - but from what I can see they are suspended on the ASX and are basically making no money (I cannot believe that this came as a surprise to ANYONE except some really gullible investors).

Having a quick glance it looks like they might be in administration?

My concern is there's going to be a "bailout" or something to save all those poor investors, instead of administrators running it super-cheap to try to get some value out of it - or even better, the government just buying back the infrastructure at a bargain-basement price based on its near zero value.

RiverCity Motorway Group went into receivership in Feb 2011. the receivers, KordaMentha now manage the group and its assets. there was not any bailout of equity investors in the group (as there shouldn't have been). a class action lawsuit was launched in May 2012 by IMF and Laurence Blackburn against engineering consultants AECOM for damages suffered by investors as a result of the traffic forecasts. the government doesn't need to buy the tunnel back, as RCY never owned the it per se, they have a concession to operate it for 45 years after which it reverts back to the city of Brisbane. the tunnel doesn't have a near zero value, only the equity in RCY has that value.

Who does own the infrastructure? Is it the State, and RCY just had a "license" to use it?

I look forward to seeing the outcome of that class action suit. Without knowing anything about it it sounds like the only way it'll go anywhere is if they can prove the traffic forecasts were total bulls***, right?
