you know where Gympie Rd comes up to meet Stafford Rd when you are going outbound ? well that stretch of Gympie road up to just before the top of the hill is TWO LANES WTFOCOPTERZ Then two Toll Lanes merge in.

Its two lanes on the other side from the top of the hill till you go past the tunnel entrence then its 3 lanes again

ITS ULTRATARDED

hundreds of millions of dollars to make a 3 lane motorway into a two lane chokepoint to funnel traffic into the tollway.

Tell me about it. They've closed a bunch of on/off ramps at springwood too, making everyone go through only the one offramp, or sit in traffic for an hour & take the next offramp and then circle back. What the f***? Seriously, who thinks of this stuff? More stupidly, who APPROVES this crap?

The amount of roads closed/reduced lanes just to make this tunnel possibly is stupid. Basically making it so you have to use this tunnel or sit in traffic that goes from 3 lanes to 1.

ICB was f***ed this morning as a result.

Tunnel opens and traffic is worst it's been for months...Coincidence?

For the most part, providing new road capacity typically creates problems in other areas (i.e. the ICB congestion). Sometimes strategically the best thing the goverment can do from an affordability perspective is nothing at all.

The best example I can give is southside where the M3 becomes the M1 (Southbound merge between the Pacific Motorway and the Gateway Motorway at Rochedale). Anyone who drives through knows that the pacific motorway south of Garden City drops from three lanes to two. This causes congestion and delays for traffic from the merge all the way back past the Logan Road off ramp. If that was upgraded then you would flood all that queued traffic onto the merge with the Gateway Motorway and down onto the Pacific Motorway. This would mean you would need to upgrade the Gateway Merge and most of the on/off ramps as far south as the Logan Hyperdome.

That is obviously not cheap and few users would see a real benefit until the upgrades are made to the Hyperdome.

Agreed. The speed cameras don't bother me, just don't speed. If there weren't any in the tunnels people would hoon through that s***, especially in the wee hours when traffic in there is light.

$2.50 seems ok toll wise. Now they just need to reduce Clem7 to $2 - $2.50 and this tunnel stuff might just work.

This.

I can appreciate 'chipping in' some funds to maintain a more heavily used piece of road, but private ownership of [what is essentially] public infrastructure is retarded.

I know cars are expensive, but Rego is on the rise, Fuel is a pain in the ass, and how long will it be before all roads have f***ing tolls on them.

Brisbane is a pain in the ass to get around without paying 3-4 tolls (when you're passing through anyway) I don't care so much coz I'm usually 'touristing it up' at the time, and as a 1 off, it's fine, its a convenience thing.

What about the poor SOB's that have to use this on their daily commute...

I was a traffic engineer working on the EIS and concept design for Airport Link and also the airport roundabout upgrade. I was then a (small) part of the team that carried out the tender review but had no specific input into which tender was selected (aka Brisconnections).

In 15 months the tolls will be $3.65 and $4.95 ...

And they think people will pay this ?
If they had trains (or light rail) in these things and had a cool subway system somehow linking up to the busway on the southside somehow it would seem ok.

$2 toll for tunnel? Holy cap, can we have that kind of toll for the tunnels in Melbourne? It costs me about $12/day to use Citylink,

I don't think you get the $2 toll comment. (Turns out it will soon be $3.65)
Sandgate Rd and Gympie Rd are highly connected, this toll road does connect them at a slightly different angle (but not really a more useful one), to be honest from s*** hole choke point to another s*** hole choke point (people run , and they made both s*** hole choke points worse in the process.

So if you were to drive from say Boondall to Kangaroo point (about 16km or so each way) it would $18 a day. You'd have to hate traffic to pay $4320 a year in tolls.

No.. I didn't make the roundabout.

I worked on the upgrade in place now, i.e. the fly over and at grade signalised intersection.

The part I worked on was developing the initial concept design and accompanying impact assessment. This part of the project(s) proves that it is feasible to build the project and that the impacts can be mitigated.

Once that is done it can get government approval and go out to tender, where consortiums (i.e. consultants, construction companies, financial backers) bid to win the rights to build the project. At this point each consortium submits its own design and accompanying documentation and the government reviews them and selects the preferred bid. In this case they selected Brisconnections design.

it basically f***ed the rest of gympie road tonight after the exit.

actually well before the exit where you come out the overpass was banked up

that will fade though once the excitement of driving through a tunnel goes away and people start getting charged.

the comedy option of merging a lane of gympie road with a exiting lane off the overpass was completely f***ed and i could actually see some accidents happening there with idiots and old people stopping to merge like they do on the highway

the run to work this morning was awesome i was there in less than half an hour, i was lucky to cruise past the banked up traffic on the icb where i get off at the normanby

once i start getting charged i will only use it if im running real late or am in a bit of a hurry like i do with the go between bridge.

So do I. Londons congestion zones reduced traffic massively when they introduced it. Use the charges to build our train network to grade separated and make the city bypasses free. Brisbane would be set.

However our government is being tard and going the bus route.

It was fail at 5:15pm when I was there for a looksy.
you had 2 Toll lanes merging with 2 Gympie Rd lanes going up a hill. Traffic was backed up and going slow at least as far out as ALDI.
Stafford Rd tollway exit was worse. I think there is only one lane outbound on Stafford Rd.

Cars going inbound ?
prolly every 3rd car was going in to the tunnel, no traffic problems at all, lots of Trucks using it in the 5 mins i was there.

The old man came from the Airport around 6pm to Gympie Rd ramp, said there was hardly anyone until they got to the ramp of the tollway at gympie rd.

As long as the Tollway isnt popular it wont hurt Kedron so much.
Its certainly not going to be a solution to traffic congestion in the future.
Many ppl have to jump lanes to turn right at the Bowling alley but its impossible with the traffic coming off the Tollway.

Poorly designed the Kedron part.
I predict an accident at that gympie rd area it was pretty torrid through there.

Have to admit its nice walk along Gympie Rd there, if you can handle the traffic. Nice landscaping and lots of room, Thats the eastern side.
Lots of room that could have been extra lanes.

Do agree about the accident though, that merge is the most retarded thing I've seen in a while I am predicting the linemarking will change though there to split that up somehow. There is plenty of room there with that big awkward chevroned split between the lanes on Gympie road for it to change

I used it tonight to go from Annerley to Kedron for bowling. Took both the Clem7 and the AirportLink there and did the trip in less than 15minutes. Nice.

Did just the AirportLink on way home and took about 20-25minutes. So still saving me 5-10mins and a bunch of crappy traffic/lights.

Considering the Clem7 starts a few minutes from my place in Annerley and the AirportLink comes out right next to the bowling alley in Kedron, i may be tempted to pay the price each week. After all, i only really drive my car once a week and thats this trip, so might as well make it an easy one. :)

There was 1 or 2 other cars in Clem as usual but as soon as i moved to AirportLink, all 3 lanes were pretty full.

they just use really optimistic "factors" Faceman.

Not saying they used any of these but some obvious ways of getting a higher volume in the tunnel from a forecasting model would include:

- future road network assumptions i.e. Gympie Road becoming 8 traffic lanes and alternative competing routes don't get upgrades
- demographics i.e. assume huge densification around tunnel portals with highrise buildings etc. Chermside is already targeted to become a principle activity centre with high rise buildings.
- assume a very high value of time for Bribanites i.e. people are more willing to spend money to save time
- assumed daily profile i.e. 4 hour peaks in the tunnel instead of a typical 2-3hr peak with minimal off peak drop off
- assume low road capacities on competing routes and very high tunnel capacities
- increasing trip length distribution i.e. people are willing to travel further, more people choosing to travel to Westfield Chermside for example rather than Garden City.

Ticman: give it time, the Gateway Motorway North upgrade project is progressing through business case at the moment. Probably about 4-5 years away and I suppose subject to the new Governments continued backing of the project. http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/G/Gateway-Motorway-North-planning-study.aspx You realise they've started to build this already? It is now mid-2012 after all. Turns out what they're doing is this: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/G/Gateway-Additional-Lane-project.aspx

They should have done this years ago. Its a joke. Every afternoon from about 3pm it slows to a crawl for 3 hours.

This will have a significant impact on Brisbane roads IMO, Gympie Road for users going into the city or further south during peak hours will certainly favour the gateway motorway, providing the exits into the City can cope with the extra traffic...

Also That upgrade should have been done long, long ago. It has been a no-brainer much needed upgrade for 7+ years.

I think tolls are a fantastic idea on congested roads

Yeah for sure, charge a toll for entering the "CBD/City/Coggested Area", regardless of the road chosen if we want this user pays system.

Make the toll for driving in the area, not for using the road that best suits the travel. It's counter productive in reducing congestion, i.e. you want people using the new roads as much as possible. Instead they will be barely used (after the tolls kick in) and a bad outcome is a direct result of privatising key infrastructure.

Similarly there should be a toll (the same toll) for crossing the river ... by any bridge, (assuming we want this user pays style infrastructure).

The primary issue with doing it is cost. The section between the Bruce Highway and Deagon Deviation is flat swamp land. It is going to be very very expensive for the state government to upgrade that bit to current design standards (i.e. flood immunity) and also mitigate environmental impacts in floodland.

The couple of bridges along the way must need widening/replacement as well. That would cost. At least it would make it easier for those trucks that carry half a house to get by.

As for the swap land, instead of raising the land would they instead build a solid walls along the length of the highway so the highway can effectively be under flood level and still be OK? If the water raises higher then that there would be other issues anyway.

I saw that post Saint. It came from Ozbob. If you read Brisbane times or courier mail articles regarding transport often you would know he's pretty much the biggest public transport activist/fanboy around.

He's anti anything road based and pro anything public transport based. Also I think Ozbob = Robert Dow from rail back on track. A dude who somehow is the go to guy for a quote on PT related projects/policies for both the Courier Mail and Brisbane Times because he runs a community group but to the best of my knowledge has no actual PT/Road planning experience or training just a passion for public transport.

Also why don't you look at it this way. If you were standing on the side of road like say Gympie Road during the evening peak. You could have 4500 cars pass you in a peak hour (more most likely). That is 75 cars a minute or 1.25 cars per second passing you by. Then consider that the tunnel is also fed by Stafford Road, Sandgate Road, East-West Arterial and a few different points in the city area.

135K figure isn't as bad as it seems when you look at the tunnel as 3 separate tunnels (1 for each major entry/exit).

MOTORISTS are getting stuck in traffic jams at the exit points of Brisbane's new Airport Link tunnel as traffic light timings cause major back-ups.

I heard the timing problems at Kedron are because State Government controls some Lights and Council controls some. anyone want to shed some light on that ?

Kedron - Chermside is terrible at times. you get periods of no traffic for well over a minute. Great for pedestrians but not so good for a good traffic flow.

I checked it out again yesterday and it was a fraction worse.
I guess ppl think that even with the congestion your total time is still less than using the main roads.

Using Lutwyche road is just plain frustrating. I wouldn't use it if I had to pay full car toll fees I don't think. Still, I think motorists need to wake up and ditch they 4WD that they are driving themselves and get motorbikes/mopeds. It will save them thousands. literally.

Just look at the photo, how many duel+ passengers do you see? I don't think I even see one, but surely there is?

What if they use the 4wd on the weekend as a 4wd and pick up the kids from after school care on the way home? Wouldn't the extra vehicle, rego, etc offset that?

I tried car pooling once (in my 4wd), dropping five female co workers home on the way, my mrs at the time didn't like that very much and it didn't last long.

I was a traffic engineer working on the EIS and concept design for Airport Link and also the airport roundabout upgrade.
F*** that whole airport "upgrade" btw. That roundabout is a f*****g pain in the ass and I have no idea what anyone was thinking with the rest of the upgrade.

Previously it was a basically-always-empty double-lane highway that was 100km all the way from the motorway exit, to the airport. You had to slow down once - at that roundabout where the International Airport turn off is. Aside from that it was a beautiful dead straight road.

Now there are a series of overpasses, massive winds, corners - I have no idea where I'm going half the time. I have gotten confused at least once exiting the domestic terminal trying to get to International because the signage is poor and now there are roads and overpasses flying all over the f*****g place.

I am sure there is a reason for these changes but I cannot see what they are. Previously my only complaint was that in peak hour traffic congested around the motorway exit/entrance. I don't think I ever saw much traffic on the old airport road, even during busy flight scheduling times.

Now there's a f*****g set of lights before you can enter the domestic terminal that always seems backed up and it takes forever to drive through the domestic section proper.

It seems to me that it has done the absolute classic f*****g Brisbane trick of ignoring the fact that congestion occurs around a bunch of bottlenecks, adding a stack of new lanes where there hasn't been a lot of congestion, and then adding a couple of new bottlenecks for good measure.

The only positive thing I can say about all these stupid toll roads is that they all seem SO badly planned that they are almost inevitably going to go out of business and be taken over by the state, at which point hopefully they'll become toll free roads - so the Queensland taxpayer ends up with all this great infrastructure courtesy of some a******* who were good at telling investors that Queenslanders would love to pay tolls to save 4 minutes off their trip.

I've never paid a toll in Brisbane.
Also why don't you look at it this way. If you were standing on the side of road like say Gympie Road during the evening peak. You could have 4500 cars pass you in a peak hour (more most likely). That is 75 cars a minute or 1.25 cars per second passing you by.
Having driven on Gympie Rd in recent times I would never imagine it is possible to watch cars go buy at that rate for more than a few minutes at a time before getting stuck in traffic or hitting a red light :) Although to be fair there have been a lot of roadworks so maybe it has all changed around.

edit: btw I hate driving, in case it's not obvious, and would have loved to have seen all that investment go into more light rail/subway

Until Brizzy gets a ring road system, the traffic will always be a clusterf***.

Trouble is a ring-road would cost too much to build without a toll setup and it would end up being a legacy project which our short term political cycle won't touch.

Actually Dazhel the problem with the light rail is it follows the middle section of the best connected part of the coast southport to surfers.

It doesn't connect to the existing rail lines at any point, and it doesn't help the real problem connections east-west. North-south works well enough on the coast.

I'm all for light rail, but they went about it all wrong. Also, the trams are ugly as f***.

It's only stage 1 though.
True, it's a bit stupid that it doesn't meet up with either the QR lines or the airport yet. They probably should have picked one or the other for stage 1. The plan has always been to extend both north to Helensvale and south to the Coolangatta.
Now that we've got the Commonwealth Games there's a good motivation to continue the construction. East-west connections will come in time, if governments don't get cold feet.

Southside isn't to bad for driving around most of the time.

I used to live of Mt Gravatt Capalaba Road, never had a problem in the morning but in the evening it was terrible out near the Gateway.

Now I live on the Gold Coast (Ormeau) and if I drive to work I can be there in 45-50 minutes unless there is an accident.

It's usually a great run at 6am until I hit the hyperdome because Bridge construction at Loganlea Road blocks back and crawls through that part. After that its the speed limit until the Mains Road on ramp where it slows down until Birdwood on ramp. Then I get off at Juliet/Cornwall and then I go into South Bank via Annerley Road/Gladstone Road. Trick there is not to kill any cyclists.

Whilst normally I agree loads of speed cameras are crap I make an exception for tunnels for 2 reasons - bogans love flooring their s***box cars with 12" exhausts thru them, and by design tunnels become extremely dangerous in the event of a vehicle loosing control. You only have to look to Europe to see history of deaths in tunnels resulting from crashes.

I went through the tunnels last weekend. To get my my place to the airport was a piece of piss. Into Clem 7 then into Link then you are at airport - win! I am now only 3 sets of lights from the airport... and I live in Annerley.

Shame I rarely go to airport though but I do go up the sunshine coast a bit so this will be good - but when the toll comes in I'll be thinking twice for sure.

Also, I think it's a good thing to have speed cameras in there, the amount of drivers/riders you'd get speeding through there would be outta control otherwise. Tunnels are perfect for reckless driving!

They sure are. I bet they walked away with a big pile of cash and a nice clause that says their figures may be incorrect. The execs use the companies that give the big numbers so their project looks viable, so they get paid $400,000 or so for the project construction over 4 years or so.
Afterwards they walk away with the knowledge that they heavily suspected the forecast to be wrong, but $1Million richer and not a care in the world.

These guys lost me when they said they wanted 130km/h speed limits on rural freeways.
As soon as I saw that I knew they were just more impatient children where safety is actually a secondary concern.
And then you get to point 4 where they basically say "Let people speed and not get caught." - effectively making speed limits suggestions.

There's a reason people drive 5-10 ks under the limit: Because it's a speed limit! Not a mandate. An 80km limit is not a right to do that speed in all conditions either, and you can be done for doing the 'speed limit' in bad conditions.
