Lucasfilm confirmed the rumors: Michael Arndt, the award-winning screenwriter of Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 has been given the green light to write the script for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII film. Not sure if good or not.. he did get an Oscar though clicky

Hard to say how it plays out given how little we know. Will he come up with a story or just write the script? Will he be the only writer? Who else can change the script?
There will probably be a committee of people pouring over this thing and amending it. Maybe that's a good thing, nobody dared to tell Lucas how to suck eggs in Episode 1, and look what you got.

It's Star Wars: Episode VII not Star Wars 2: Episode I.
Mark, Carrie and Harrison were in talks with George before the sale.

i've never seen toy story 3 or little miss sunshine but i am going to go ahead & assume that it's going to be pretty fukn bad. Both are actually pretty decent movies, I think the main beef is over the fact that he doesn't seem to be a fitting writer for SW franchise.

I liked Toy Story 3 as well. Twas a lot more interesting than the first two. Also I don't wanna see any of the original cast back in the movie. I'd prefer something totally new and not a continuation of the other six. And the idea of it revolving around Han and Leia's kid/s sounds like such a dumb idea if that's what they are planning.

Yes, but I can't imagine lightsabers and slap-stick comedy going together when it's not Lego Star Wars.

For all those people wanting to see the original cast, remember how well Indy IV turned out. Be careful what you wish for...
Bah, bringing back Vader sucks so hard. Ruins the end of Jedi.

yer.. but if the intention is to have vader as anarkin the jedi ghost, then why does the article say "the evil vader will grace the big screen again"? it's not darth vader unless he's a sith.

Maybe Anakin's force ghost has a split personality because he was evil for so long.
But it sounds more like the reporter is misinterpreting it.
Who the fuck knows at this stage?

Here's a theory... one of their kids will take on the mantle of Darth Vader. Perhaps even being manipulated by the ghost of Palpatine.
* BOOK SPOILER *
In the books Han and Leia's eldest son Jacen turned to the dark side and killed Luke's wife Mara Jade.

Guys... Why are you worrying? Star wars EU has quality worlds and lore out the wazoo, DISNEY is working on it, goerge lucas is hands-off giving nothing but constructive criticism, it's got a mad screenwriter...
Who cares about details like this faux or not? It's gonna rock your world.

Wha.. so they're not basing it on the Timothy Zahn series of books.. =(

they aren't basing it on ANY of the books. It's an entirely new story.
Sometimes I think I'm the only person who is actually excited for this.

In big news that has almost guaranteed awesomeness, Lawrence Kasdan has been signed up as a writer Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg have closed deals to write installments of the new Star Wars trilogy, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The pair will write either Episode VIII or Episode IX -- their exact division of responsibilities is yet to be determined -- and also will come aboard to produce the films. He was a writer on Empire and Jedi, as well as being one of the main engines behind Raiders of the Lost Ark. This is really good news... when I first heard about these new Star Wars I was hoping they would get him involved. linky

If Kasdan is on board then it might be ok.
Star wars, for me anyway, starts and finishes with the unmolested versions of the Original Trilogy.
Those other films are are the fecal splatter of a mad man.
|
I don't know the detail, but isn't it the case that it's Lucas who fucked up the 3 newer films? And he didn't really create all the awesomeness in the original trilogy?
So as long as he's not involved it has a good chance of being dandy?

It's all speculation until the movie is released really... even when you get projects with "shitty" directors, cast and writers... sometimes they come out being quite awesome. Opposite end of the scale, put all the big names and dollar dollar bills behind it and it still turns out to be total wank...

Would be nice to have film adaptations of the Heir to the Empire (Grand Admiral Thrawn) series of books by Timothy Zahn. Best Star Wars books out there.
Who would you want as director?

I would put money down that I'm probably the biggest starwars fan on qgl.
Firstly, I don't mind that Disney has the rights to this. They have made good movies and have some good writers on board with this so yeah no problem there.
secondly, IF they decide to carry on the original story even if its loosely based on it im cool with that, and it would be even cooler if some of the original cast made a return. For example luke could teach his sister the ways of the force and she becomes a jedi. I have read rumors many years ago that in one of the planned books that never got put forward luke turns to the dark side but lia manages to turn him back. In some comics bobba fett also returns and flys out of the sarlac pit.
I would imagine they would keep the empire side of things around but try a different strategy to gain galaxy control other than just trying to make a huge space station without the dark side influence.
Honestly who knows where they might go with it but il still watch it I just hope it stays tru to the original story or at least has some good connection with it.

Apparently Matthew Vaughn (guy who directed Kickass and X-men: First Class) is rumoured to be a hot contender, because he was signed up to do a sequel for X-Men: First Class then dropped out suddenly for undisclosed reasons, and "inside sources" are saying it was because he was offered Star Wars. Its likely bullshit, but I wouldn't mind that, I've liked the stuff hes done so far and he can film good action with a bit of humour without it becoming childish.

First Class and Kick-Ass were both really good. In a way it is a shame it's not someone super magnificent like Spielberg, but if it's Vaughn that is at least promising.
The next X-Men is being directed by Bryan Singer!

Having Leonard Nimoy play the original Spock in the Star Trek remake totally made that movie. Hopefully the same will happen here.
Also, +1 for Whedon as director that'd be awesome.
