I just watched a couple of nice indie type ones and just by pure flukey-ness they both have the same actor in them. Mark Duplass is really making a name for himself with the whole directing and acting thing. He's Pete from The League tv show if you were wondering. If you haven't seen The League he's also in Safety Not Guaranteed and Your Sister's Sister.
Safety Not Guaranteed
Three magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a companion for time travel.
Your Sister's Sister
Iris invites her friend Jack to stay at her family's island getaway after the death of his brother. At their remote cabin, Jack's drunken encounter with Hannah, Iris' sister, kicks off a revealing stretch of days.
The Amazing Spider-Man. I finally got around to watching it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked that the webbing was manufactured like in the comics, and overall it had a much better comic feel then the previous ones.
Nothing, absolutely nothing! I've been bereft of good movies. It seems nothing I watch really grabs me lately.
I've seen some average ones, sure they entertain me, but no WOW factor for a while. I'm talking home entertainment here, ISO's, so I haven't caught a lot of new releases yet.
I find myself watching a cycle of TV Series, The Wire, Person of Interest, The Walking Dead, Grimm, 30 Rock, are my latest.
Diary of a wimpy kid 3(same as the other 2), cockneys vs zombies(for a laugh), evil dead(never seen it), the descent 1 and 2(i think they are making a third)
I have to say that Dredd was pretty damned entertaining. No mask removal, no shitty, cheesy plot. Just gritty, raw, Judge Dredd goodness. Absolutely worth price of admission.
If you like Horror crazymorton, here are a couple I can recommend (that you've probably seen but you never know):
American Movie (doco)
Dawn of the Dead (remake and original)
Drag Me to hell
Grave Encounters
His Name Was Jason (doco)
The Mist
The Hunger
Let The Right One In
Poltergeist
The Tunnel
The Thing
The Signal
The Best Worst Movie (doco)
The Blob
Other movies that you've probably seen already (but if not you should watch):
The Man With Two Brains
Waiting for Guffman
Three Amigos
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Colors (sic)
Pathfinder
Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior
Razorback
Animal Kingdom
Ken Park
The Man Who Would be King
American Ninja 2
Goodfellas
The Wrestler
Three Kings
Eagle vs Shark
Funny People
Young Frankenstein
See No Evil, Hear No Evil
Safety Not Guaranteed was alright, it had it's bad moments though. The whole subplot of the dude trying to bang an old flame was pretty stupid, but the main plot kinda had just enough good parts to make up for it. I'm prepared to give this one a pass, it was from a rookie writer & director pair and it painfully shows sometimes but it wasn't too bad all things considered.
Seeking a Friend For The End of The World I enjoyed, but the entire plot was thoroughly predictable.
The Campaign was pretty dull - I was expecting more from Will Ferrell and Zach Galafianakis.
Others that are good: Looper (until reddit predictably picked apart the time travel bits, gah) Cockneys vs Zombies I haven't seen it yet, but Argo is reportedly pretty awesome as well
Whole lot of watched recently but not recently released list going on here.
Yeah, I have pretty much migrated to TV shows because I've found movies so lacking in the past few years overall.
Might check out those indies in the OP though. Been thinking about googling for a list of foreign films to check out - thinking that perhaps there's someone overseas that has a similar taste in films of interest to me - even if I have to read subtitles to follow along ~
Disagree. I was expecting more action but instead got 2hrs of slow ass drama with only a bunch of action/suspense scenes thrown in. Wish i had gone to see Dredd or Killing them softly instead. And 2 dudes happily fucking 1 chick, come the fuck on.
Looper was good. Why were the weapons (revolver and blunderbuss shotgun thing) old school though?
Brief Synopsis: This doco tells the story of a 'black project' that took place during the peak of the cold war where two American companies, in concert with the American Government attempt to recover the remains of a wrecked Soviet Nuclear Submarine.
So, it's not as 'dramatic' as a movie in terms of delivery, but for anyone with an interest in engineering (or human ingenuity) should check it out. Fucking fascinating story.
Cheers Mike, I love docos, if anyone else wants to recommend any good new/old ones I'd be grateful.
Good docs I've seen recently.
Client 9 - The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer History of Britain - Simon Schama Putin, Russia and The West
Watched Prometheus last night, it starts strong and has some awesome ideas, but really falls down in the last half. Still enjoyed it, but glad I had tempered my expectations. I don't know how people can say this isnt an a film in the Alien franchise, the little buggers have got their fingerprints all over it.
Moon is still the best sci-fi film I've seen in recent memory.
Can someone please tell me what the name of that movie was were a women claimed her children were abducted by aliens in a small american/canadian town. It's kind of like a movie based on a true story (alleged) story etc.
Watched The Amazing Spider-Man last week, wasn't bad, nothing earth-shattering though.
Actually just watched it tonight, didn't mind it, I thought it was better that Toby McGuire's version.
Watched Cockneys vs Zombies last night, good for a laugh but didn't really live up to past british zombie movies.
Also watched a doco last night called A Million in the Morning, well worth checking out. It's about a movie watching comp run by netflix where the contestants have to stay up for 5 days straight watching movies to get into the guinness book of records and win 10k. The doco focus's on the host whose up for the entire time and kinda goes mentally insane from sleep deprivation.
Watched the new universal soldier, same as the other 4 or 5 of them, nice to see jean Claude and dolph though. Jumped about ten foot in the air with the car crash asy daughter had snuck in and touched my Shoulder from the back of the couch at the exact second to tell me it was too loud.
Hi, I am fond of watching movies and recently i have watched drag me to hell and grave encounters. It is really good concept and very entertainer film. All should watch this film and it is so good.
Here's another indie style one that's been out for ages. I just finished watching it again. Prolly seen it 3 times now and it's one of those nice feel good movies you can rely on when you just wanna sit back and see something different. Twas released back in 2009 although I've never seen it here in Australia. It's a pity because it's such a cool movie.
Sunshine was a great movie right up to the ending which was some kind of train wreck.
Saw a weird movie with the Olsen twins sister as a young chick who escapes a Cult. Pretty heavy going movie, kind of moves back and forth as you see the chick try to rejoin her sister and her husband spliced with what happened at the Cult.
Dont watch the trailer, it spoils the movie.
Saw Wreck It Ralph the other week and holy jesus it was awesome. Easily the best animated movie since Tangled. I can't wait for it to come out on bluray so I can watch it hi-def goodness. Maybe 3D if it comes in it.
Watched this fairly weird and relatively famous 2003 french movie called Love me if you dare. Its got that chick from The Dark Knight and Inception. Its a blend of Rom/Com with some weirdness/serious vibes thrown in. Thought it was really well done, would recommend ++
Went and saw Jurassic Park 3D yesterday evening and was surprised by how well they'd done the 3D conversion. Also it was awesome seeing JP on the big screen again, such an awesome movie especially considering it's 20 years old now.
I enjoyed Wreck it Ralph for what it was, but it wasn't as good as say, Toy Story, or Monsters Inc, or A Bug's Life.
It wasn't garbage tho, and that might just be my new 'scale' of movie ratings...
Made the mistake of thinking that 'Saints and Sinners' would be an 'ok' action film. Cinematics were reasonable, plot was weak as piss, and the sound effects were woeful. (Y'Know, really bad dub work, cheesy/over-used sound effects etc)
