A few recommendations so bear with me.

Hellsing Ultimate - It follows the manga very closely and is so much better than the series since there are 10 episodes and each lasts like an hour.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - It's known as When the Cicadas Cry since it got released in the US. Only bother with the first series though. This show has so many fucked up moments it's not funny. It's based on a game with multiple endings so the 1st season goes through a lot of those different arcs (each story lasts 4 or 5 episodes then the whole thing starts over with a different one). It's horror/thriller genre so each arc has different people being killed and different shit happening. Like this for example

Another - Another creepy show that finished last month and is a thriller/horror with amazingly cool artwork and cool plot (I thought) with some really cool gore moments

Mnemosyne - Only 6 episodes long. Watch it.

Elfin Lied - Anyone who has seen this will tell you how fucked up it is and that you should watch it anyway. I had a chinese bootleg of this and the englrish subtitles were hilarious like when 1 of the characters were crying it would come up "Hoot Hoot".

Yeah I actually had the same impression, saw the dubbed version on CN and thought wtf. A few years latter I found out it was the most popular series in Japan and gave it another go but this time the Japanese version and the first 50 or so episodes sold me.

It certainly has it's ups and downs like a lot of long anime series but I guess being about sailing and pirates kind of appeals to me.

Sorry the following is a bit rambly because some of it is response to some posts here and some of it is my own recommendations..

As a more generic anime i didn't watch Full Metal Panic for the longest time, but it turned out to be much more entertaining than i thought.

I watched gantz before the manga, the anime was awesome. I only recently tried reading the manga, and it's ok too. TBH though I haven't watched gantz since like 2004 or 2005 or whenever it was first released and fansubbed, i was waiting week to week for the release for that because the anime was actually quite dark and good. I stopped watching at the end of some season and didn't pick it up again after. No reason, just never got back around to it.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Watched this over the course of a lazy weekend. It got bonus points for showing the passage of time and characters growing from boys to men and difference in responsibility. Way too much metaphor of the 'spiral' drill thing. I almost was face-palming myself towards the end.

A better anime for showing the the passage of time and a fantastic story is the anime series Gungrave. Lame name, starts a little slow, but builds an awesome case for how a 'yakuza' (never really mentioned directly) family somewhat exists and then how the passage of time changes people and two friends who relied on each other just to live end up mortal enemies by the time they're in their older age just because of the different experiences they have. Good ending too.

Samurai Champloo + Cowboy bebop. Watch cowboy bebop first, it's better. It's the only reason i probably like firefly. Space cowboys are awesome and it's the master of both filler episodes, likeable characters, and a reasonably good and intricate plot.

Kenshin is pretty much not really worth the time imo i stopped after the first 60 episodes. The only kenshin worth watching is the OVA's or the "Samurai X" 2 episodes or whatever. They're very worth watching. It makes the rest of kenshin look like some kind of joke in comparison.

I hope this manga i read recently gets made into an anime; it's called akumetsu and i think if done right it could be as good as deathnote. Maybe.

I do not recommend anime with more than 100 episodes. So you might be able to watch the re-release of DBZ which is called Dragon Ball Kai, the whole plot of DBZ but without any filler. Otherwise, just don't bother. Same goes for naruto, one peice and bleach. Probably a few more fit in but use that rule and you'll thank your time better spent later.

Edit: just as a double up for cowboy bebop; the music in that anime is the best.

There is some amazing music in anime, it's a huge part of what makes it so good for me.

Both versions of fullmetal, bleach, fairy tail, pokemon - all have great soundtracks.

Though not anime, Airbender and Korra both have great music too, done by just two guys I read, though does sound sort of synth'y - tis still great.

Oh, everybody should see The Twelve Kingdoms, if they haven't. The English dubs are excellent, though don't seem so right at the start.

The first episode seems like a terribad twilight show, and then everything gets a thousand times better. The world is fantastic and hella interesting, I wish that they'd make the recent books into episodes too.

Nah I've hardly seen any anime, mostly just what has been recommended to me, though intend to check out a lot of stuff in this thread.

That being said, Twelve Kingdoms is still really really good, by any standards. :D

During the first episode you will be wondering why I recommended this to you, it will probably seem like a less perverted versions of sailor moon, and then, bam. Imagine if there were a God, it was Chinese, and it made a second world after Earth which represented something like a balanced RTS map, where magic only worked if the leaders were ruling well...

I put one of my mates on to the Berzerk anime, and he sought out the manga, put me onto it, and is now ahead of me in reading it.

Berzerk is the bomb Nerfy. take an hour out of your life and watch the first two episodes on youtube. It's sweet.

I'm currently acquiring the twelve kingdoms by completely legitimate means.......

Full Metal Panic (I actually have the DVDs of this)
Full Metal Alchemist
Elfen Lied
Lucky Star
K-On
Azumanga Daioh (Classic)
Cowboy Bebop (have not watched the movies but I should. This totally needs a second and third season. A new series in the same line as it would also be cool. Why they haven't made more of this is baffling and makes me sad.)

I would have to go through my collection to come up with more. Go to your local dvd rental place, they may have a few recent or classic ones.

That is an e-reader for several online manga sites. I use it on both my phone and tablet. A fair bit.

All you do is open it, choose your resource, then browse to an anime. Then you just read it like a book and it downloads as you go. If you know you're not going to be near an internet source for a bit, you can cache as much or as little as you like by long pressing on the series and choosing the start chapter and end chapter to download.

Tablets are so perfect for manga reading.. but also I find a phone in landscape is good too, just the right width and scroll down as you read.

I'm a massive fan of Berserk, own most of the graphic novels. I watched the series in its entirety years ago now, and loved every second of it. The ending is what made me pick up the manga.

I tried watching it again this year and it has NOT aged well, I found the constant use of stock footage jarring and the voice acting woeful.

*EDIT* It looks like there's only a movie adaptation of the Golden Age ARC for berserk, and it's animated (phew!) not live action.

Trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CHf8aGuxVo ( I don't like embedding ;P )

+1 Samurai Champloo (made by the same mob who did Cowboy bebop)
+1 Cowboy Bebop.
+1 Gurren Lagann

Both of these are stand out anime for me, and ones that everyone should watch.

Also, if you can get your hands on it, Redline. It's a movie that took a several years to make, all hand drawn, the animation is without equal. Story SOUNDS a little weak, but it's actually quite engaging.

*Edit 2*

skythra was pretty much spot on. The only thing I didn't agree on was Gantz. I have friends who love it, but I couldn't feel it. There is nothing wrong with the story, the anime just had a way of dragging out scenes that frustrated me enough to make watching it feel like a chore.

Beautiful animation though.

After watching the trailers for the movie remake of the series, I would strongly advise waiting to watch the movie (unless it's already out I haven't looked).

It covers the same period as the original anime series, but the quality is significantly better.

...mostly-static-images-with-sound ...

That sums it up pretty well. The voices actors sounded like they were handed a script, and a microphone and just told to read the lines into it. There is no way they were ever in the same room with the voice actors their characters were supposed to be talking to, and it shows.

What's peoples opinion of Japanese voice acting + subtitles vs English dubbed?

I find in almost every case I much prefer the Japanese voice acting and that the English dubbed version sounds like people just monotonously reading a very poorly adapted script. I think the only time this has been an exception is with Studio Ghibli movies where they get real actors to voice the parts and I think Cowboy Beebop and DBZ are the only series that have had as good or better voice acting than the Japanese version.

Everything else, the quality of the Japanese voice acting just blows what poor effort the English dub comes up with. Especially when it comes to the delivery of jokes or emotion.

Yeah it's very hit and miss, the emotion in the Japanese voice acting always fits, and you can tell the tone / mood from it, regardless if you understand the language, so it's something to go along with the subs.

The only dubs I've managed to watch for a full series are Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist.

Speaking of the jokes, because so many are cultural I find I pick up a lot of little things from the sub groups having to explain it :P

Agreed Japanese voice acting is better imo.

One PIece all the way. 554 eps to get through but there are a few cheats (like watching one of the movie and skipping 150 eps or so). I was not that into it but after Water 7 it gets amazing around the time.

I am a big fan of short animes. So FLCL all the way. Denno Coil is another weird one about a bunch of kids fighting a virtual war using their augmentation goggles. Great Teacher Onizuka is about an infamous gang leader who wants to be a teacher (so he can get with his students) but ends up getting the toughest class. Memorable moments such as supplexing the vice principal because he was calling 2 ex students trash, asking a fellow teacher to suck his pensi because he thought a cobra had bitten him, gets top grades even though he gets shot 5 times. Baccano! is amazing, hard to describe but well worth the watch. Diebuster 2/GunBuster 2/Aim for the top 2 is similar in style (and even the same company i think as well) to FLCL, about a girl who wants to be part of the topless team (who fight weird aliens, she takes it literally at one point).

Do not watch both versions of full metal alchemist. It will mess shit up for you, they refer to different homunculus by different names and other stuff like Scar is just different. But then again the first had better pacing.

Totally forgot that there was another good anime that i really liked recently; Durarara.

I'm not sure how to give it a synopsis but here it goes:

A kid moves into Ikebukuro to find a more exciting life away from rural japan. He meets up with his friend from gradeschool and so they attend highschool together. That's kind of irrelevant though because that setup aside it's about gangs, the internet, fairy tails, and how everyone has a story which ties in to what we call life.

To begin with for example, each episode is dedicated to a different group of people or person telling the story of their world and later in the season you see from that setup, how it interacts with each others stories to create the conclusion.

I don't want to spoil it or anything though it's worth a watch i think.

firstly do yourself a favor and avoid dubs. they are typically done by the cheapest 'actors' available and aimed at children, sucking all the charm out of a show. a lot of good recommendations already, some standouts I've enjoyed that haven't been mentioned:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Garden of Sinners
Katanagatari
Hunter X Hunter
Spice and Wolf
Toradora!
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
School Rumble
Gungrave
Golden boy
Bakemonogatari
Detroit Metal City
Love hina
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
Akira
Slam Dunk
Arakawa under the Bridge
Kimi ni Todoke

no particular order. also anidb.net is a great companion for anime watching.

Some dubs are decent, as others have said Cowboy Bebop was fine. Twelve Kingdoms was also dubbed fine (though the main character starts off bad, she gets into it fairly fast).

I'd suggest all the Lupin III films (Mystery of Mamo, The Castle of Cagliostro, Legend of the Gold of Babylon, Farewell to Nostradamus, Dead or Alive). Farewell to Nostradamus is probably a better starting point than The Castle of Cagliostro.

You should check out Baccano! if you haven't already, done by the same guys and the story is told in a similar way.

I reckon it's better than Durarara but I think the 1920's mobster-like setting kind of biases me towards it.

Besides no white person can talk like a high pitched japanese girl. White people's 'high pitched' voices always sound childish like an adult imitating a young boy's voice or comically high, like that girl from big bang theory. However japanese make it sound like it's part of their character to make it 'cute' rather than a free laugh.

edit: second too late to reply!

Edit2: just elaborating that otherwise racist remark

Thanks for the vote of confidence Skythra, but i just farked up haha. Up late after a late shift and post Leveson inquiry, have had a few beers D:
Big fan of that particular anime, and must confess to watching the series both dubbed and subbed. The story is good enough to suffer through either language, take your pick!

unless your a slow reader, Japanese people use alot more syllables when the speak.
for them to say "Hello, How are you" takes 3 times aslong.

Yeah, with most stuff it isn't a problem, since anime has that unique trait of being fairly low on animation, being half manga'erish still. There was something or other that I watched, where the subs actually weren't keeping up well, but it's a rarity.
