Hah, Contact would have been my top choice too.

And my next choice would have been about trouble in China, but not that one - The Painted Veil, awesome movie.

Other than that - Fantastic Planet, Moon, maybe Ted Danson's Gulliver's Travels.

I really enjoyed District 9.

Probably Forrest Gump would be up there.

Boogie Nights. My gf hates it and my ex-gf really really hated it - but I just find it so funny and I love the winding narrative.

Full Metal Jacket for sure and probably Platoon (I'm a sucker for war films).

Contact? Really?

In no particular order:
  • A few good men

  • Batman Begins

  • Fight Club

  • Office Space

  • For love of the game

On a related note, I thought I'd take this opportunity to spam a mates startup company, http://goodfil.ms/
It allows you to rate movies with a simple system and then see friends ratings across the rest of the worlds ratings, so helps giving you ideas of what to watch next, etc.

Please give it a try - it really does work well.

Contact? really? I haven't seen it in a while but it wasn't particularly eventful... Considering all your other choices are action-packed.

edit: I swear I didn't read Raven's post before posting... motherfucking jinx!

I have way too many really, very tough choice.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Ace Ventura Pet Detective and When Nature Calls
Jumanji
Hook
All old Disney films
Toy Story series

I am actually a sucker for the 50's films, just because it's so amazing how much character and difference there is in todays films.

I can get a fairly respectable list just from Bruce Willis films.

1. Die Hard
2. The Fifth Element
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Twelve Monkeys
5. Charlie's Angels: Full Throt... nah just kidding, Sin City.

Not my actual "Top 5" but without thinking about it too hard they would probably be in my top 10 or 20 somewhere, along with Unbreakable.

Heh, I saw Contact before even knowing who Carl Sagan was - just knew that it was based on a book by a scientist, and that the author passed away before or around when it was released.

Instantly became my favourite sci-fi, and probably all-time, movie, and years later, at the end of one of the revised Cosmos episodes, Sagan mentioned some science he used for Contact, and my mind was blown.

Other honourable mentions based on what others have said and reminded me of after I forgot them earlier:
Pulp Fiction

Aladdin

Die Hard with a Vengeance
Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Damn, making a list of just 5 is hard!

Nothing really original in my list except perhaps the last one.

Goonies
Aliens
Labyrinth
Die Hard
Transformers Animated Movie (the 80s one)

I was addicted to transformers as a kid and this was mind blowing when I saw it. Even today it still has some good animation in it, some pretty cool voice acting in it and was the first movie I remember that made me cry. Megatron and Optimus prime beating the fucking shit out of each other was so great but the following scene where Optimus dies just made me baw so hard because he was my favourite character. What 80s kids show did that? Have the evil guy beat the good guy to death?

I was reading this thread and thinking, isnt it great that we are all so different (or wierd :P) and have different tastes...

In no particular order but certainly in my top 5 movie list
1) Aliens
2) Blues Brothers
3) Once were warriors
4) LOTR Trilogy
5) Ip Man

And a couple that might have been top 5 depending on my mood - Ong Bak, Hot Fuzz and Seven Samurai

(Why these movies? Can i watch them again? Did they move me in some way or make me snort my drink out my nose from laughing? Was it music that made me want to get up and shake my tail feather or fight scenes that left me (and still do) wondering how the hell they did that? - I would like to have included a couple more foreign movies in there as i think that right now the best cinema is not coming from the USA but the problem with foreign films is that you cant remember the names of them easily :P)

P.S

Contact as a top 5 movie compared to so many other awesome movies? That movie could have been so much more...

Contact has something to do with Carl Sagan? I saw it as being a distinctly religious movie about finding God disguised as a story about 'naive' scientists looking for aliens.

He and his wife, who are both atheists/scientists, wrote it.

It was about many things that I could tell, but one of them was the problem of eye witness accounts, and how even a scientist or like-minded person should remain skeptical - of even their own experiences.

Yeah a top 50 list would have been way easier. Mine would be something like

Big Trouble in Little China, Heat, The Darjeeling Limited, Pulp Fiction, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Inglourious Basterds, The Big Lebowski, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown, The Seven Samurai, A Clockwork Orange, Once Upon a Time in the West, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Terminator 2, The Third Man, The Thing, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Total Recall, Predator, M, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Catch 22, The Fifth Element, Beverly Hills Cop, Drive, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Snatch, Fight Club, The Wrong Man, Goodfellas, Ronin, Reservoir Dogs, Inception, The Departed, Collateral, Kill Bill, Death Proof, The Matrix, Die Hard, Full Metal Jacket, V for Vendetta, Sin City, Das Boot, Saving Private Ryan, Charade, North by Northwest and To Catch a Thief.

I'll stop there. I admit some of the above are 'better' than my top five i.e. classics, oscar winners or whatever but that doesn't count for everything.

The Transformers movie made a mark on me too like the original TMNT movie and GI Joe animated movie to a lesser extent. Everytime my friend's mum took us to the video store when I was about 5 or 6, pretty much every couple of weeks, I would get the Transformers movie. One day we went there she actually raged me and said do not get that movie!

But could have also picked from any of these:
Fight Club
Tomestone (best western ever made IMHO)
The Green mile
Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Batman, The Dark Knight (just for Heaths performance if nothing else)
The Matrix
2001 a space odyssey
Zulu (an old one from left field)
Mad Max
The Silence of the Lambs
Rear Window
Gladiator
Kill Bill
Ben-Hur
Black Hawk Down

There have been so many great movies.

Stargate

There aren't many movies that I can re-watch and not get bored with but I'd have to say these 5 would be on the list of movies I can just chuck in and watch, no matter what kind of mood I'm in.

Ya LOTR - although it is 3 separate films it is only because they couldnt make one 7hr film and expect people to sit through it

As to Star Wars... the original was awesome back in 1976 but it just got progressively more borked every time they added a new movie to it or revisited it etc. Would never make my top 10 even though i am a huge Sci Fi fan
