It seems to be more about the new alien guys more than the aliens we know, which is a good thing since it not only stands as its own movie but then links in with the others. Looking forward to seeing this.
That faux TED talk is great. I used the to basically the same thing a long time ago - that if we can create life, how are we not gods?
As much as Prometheus looks awesome, I would rather see a movie made to the script of the leaked fake plot synopsis when the movie was just becoming known about.
It started out as a prequel to the Alien movies, then after many script rewrites it became a story of its own based in the Alien universe with hints towards the Alien movies but still holding as a stand alone film.
Sound and visuals seem excellent. I am not sure about the story though, I am not totally sure what is supposed to be going on. Just have to wait and see I suppose. Ill wait til its on bluray at civic and watch it, Movie theaters I do not care for.
Will spoiler tag this next part since this could very well be the general storyline to the movie. I remember reading awhile back that this was said to be at least 1 of the scripts they had. For all I know they've run with it and this is indeed what the general plot will be. So yeah...
Spoiler: Humans find alien relics/instructions on how to contact them. They do so and aliens invite/beam them to their ship to see what's up on. Humans want some of this new technology so they do what all good humans do and become fucking thieves and do a runner. Aliens say lol fuck you and release the "aliens" on a ship to chase them down and kill them, like they are bounty hunters/attack dogs. Shit goes down and ship crashes on LV426 or whatever that planet is and then alien 1 picks up a long time after that
Based on the trailer, that doesn't sound like its the story at all
Looks pretty much like every movie I've seen orbiting the same basic story line from the trailer.
-Humans find evidence of aliens and how to contact them (through a dream, map found in a cave, stargate in the desert, signal captured in mexico).
-Humans go nuts & celebrate not being alone & ponder whether or not the aliens will be friendly.
-Military people say lol friendly & mount nukes to everyone's back but claim they're to "power all the equipment" (ok this may not have happened in any movie I saw)
-Humans contact the aliens who say cheers bro, lets be buds.
-Humans either fuck things up because the military guys want the fancy guns & steal shit or the aliens lied & try to kill the humans who, either way, somehow manage to outsmart a civilisation capable of travelling faster than light speed, who have superior weapons and technology and who could nuke the earth from orbit.
At first I thought it was some stargate movie. Look at the thumbnail of the video, it's basically a stargate complete with iris. Come on. All through the trailer it smelled of the plot to stargate too.
This was over on reddit which I found interesting. Man I can't wait to see this. Also according to at least the alien comics (I know, I know) the space jockies are pretty big cock heads and that ship is actually meant for taking over planets. Like they'll set the aliens loose, wait for the race to be killed off and then come in and wipe out the aliens.
I haven't watched the trailer or the TED talk stuff; I'm too scared of spoilers because this is one of the vanishingly few movies I'm actually interested in seeing
You could watch the TED talk, its spoiler free, its just Guy Pierce pretending to be the head of Weyland industries, giving a talk about where his company is heading.

do you really have to ask?
3D is a shitty gimmick that, in it's current form, has nearly ruined film making. Thanks fuck they still give the option of seeing the proper version.
Well, it was filmed in 3D, so it might be good quality 3D, but you still have to put up with the other shit aspects of watching a movie in 3D like the dimmed brightness, muted colours, and crappy glasses.
it's not just you khel. the 3d glasses are tinted, hence less light & muted colours.
i got a pair right here & not only are they tinted but the plastic the lenses are made of is low quality & is covered in scuff marks making the image quite blurred. i've only ever worn these glasses once too.
I'm sure I read somewhere (probably here) that the projection brightness is supposed to be increased to compensate for the polarisation in the 3d glasses, but some cinemas don't do it at all or don't do it enough so you get an unintended darker look to the movie.
I'm on the fence with 3D - when I saw Avatar it looked a bit dodgy, but went to a different cinema to see Titanic (yeah, yeah) and it looked alright. Also, they showed the earlier Prometheus trailer in 3D so I think I'll go to see it in 3D.
The opening scene (where they wake from cryosleep) was the most amazing in 3D I recall in the film (The movie Jackass 3D is the single best use of 3D tech to date IMO). I thought the 2D version of Avatar gave a better sense of scale (most notably in the 'Fern Gully' tree destroying scene... the 3D didn't help that shot at all (also IMO)).
I'll go see this a couple of times in cinemas, so if I've got a choice, it'll be 2D first, then 3D. And possibly a trip to Sydney to see in at an IMAX cinema.
I sort of have the story worked out in my head now, It is good that it is not a direct alien prequel or sequel. I do hope that more movies in the Alien universe follow this one. One thing I might disagree with is intelligence of the Aliens, I got the feeling that they put that in. Sure the Aliens are intelligent but should never have sentience minds. why would they go to Earth? Seems a little silly to me in that aspect. They seem insect like because the drones (nasty killer ones) serve the queen and protect her.
I also hope that there will be a proper Predator movie.
Hrmmmm to see this in 3D or not to see this in 3D ... THAT is the question?
What do you guys think?
There are good and bad 3D movies, mostly bad though.
My advice is to wait until it's been out/reviewed and people give their opinion on how good the 3D is compared to say Avatar - which was 3D done properly from the beginning.
