So I figured if I wanted to hear some people on this forum do covers, like FaceMan and other guys getting around mentioning their musical prowess, then I would have to record something myself.
So get your lame covers in this thread - I'm interested to hear you.
Also, I take requests, lol. You might not want to request anything after this though.
that's pretty cool pinky.
you playing guitar on that or mixed it?
I've just started to try and teach myself guitar. using my sons, mav, that a few guys here signed at his funeral. had it lacquered up to protect the sigs and re strung and tuned. so now I'm working through some online lessons. not good enough to do what you did though.
my best memory of what may be considered a QGL cover was BillyH playing 'forever young' acoustic style at dales funeral. was very awesome. so Will, if you're out there whack that one up please.
my request for you Pinkster is 'chasing cars' can you handle that?
wtf is this hater free zone shit? this is the internet and if you can't take someone telling you how fucking horrible your sing is then don't upload it at all.
I don't have any covers exactly but I have a couple of original tracks and a bunch of remix/mashups that I will put up.
The orginals are really just diss tracks that I made for my mates about my mates; one can't handle his booze and the other is an undertaker. I made a third one that I can't get to upload cos Soundcloud blocks the sample I used. I'm not gonna get a record contract anytime soon but it was a lot of fun to make them and then play the finished version to the subjects.
Basically all tracks were made at home using my turntables, Cool Edit Pro and/or Acid Pro.
Nice! IncrEdible_vEgetable, they are all rad!! Seriously good man.
Yep FaceMan, get some jamming up.
Phooks, there are a million other threads - go hate in those ones.
crazymorton, not a fan of 'Chasing Cars' but I'll do it for you anyway. Piece of cake. I recorded this just with accoustic and vocals at once (didn't mix) using one condenser mic, then I added a bit of compression and reverb and that was it. Didn't get too carried away. Actually if I record guitar part by part, then mix down vocals bit by bit it sounds pretty professional if I take my time and am picky with my crap vocals. Plus I put a metronome in my ear when I do that so it's on time, where as this track is a bit dodgy with time.
funny, I was just thinking to myself today (as I was singing to myself quite badly) I wonder when the next qgl got talent thread will appear. I must be psychic.

my mic is shithouse and you can barely hear me and as of monday I can't open my jaw properly so yeah, won't be singing anything much any time soon. It's taken me like 3 hours just to eat my dinner :(
Pinky, great cover of Cosmo Jarvis. I love that song, I was worried you were going to kill it for me :) You have a great voice! That said, some of those guitar cords were questionable...
Haha, cheers for the kind words. Yeah, sparrow, I agree. When I tell people I play guitar I always go on to describe myself as a 'campfire guitarist' that is popular when the only other alternative is boredom :P
Loving Cosmo Jarvis at the moment. They are doing great stuff.
I have an electric guitar and bass but I don't drag them out much. I started a band though as a joke and now some guys are coming over Dec 11th and we'll make something, see how it turns out. It will be mostly synth sounds though I imagine, but we all like the same music so I'm sure we'll be able to agree on something.
good choice faceman, one of my faves
well pretty much anything david gilmour for that matter
I'm without guitars at the moment, it's hellish
we packed everything up and shipped it over here but property legals are slower than 20 wet weeks here for some reason and we've only just recently gotten a property contract finalised and money changed hands so still have all our stuff in storage
Yeah very nice, SquarkyD. Great sound. Is that just recorded with one dynamic mic?
Ok, I feel like I've let the team down with my poor recording. FaceMan, I honestly just recorded then added reverb (default settings) and compression (default settings). Didn't really give it much thought. SquarkyD's recording shits all over mine. I feel the need to do a better one now. Will give it a crack over the weekend.
If thats the style you were after then keep with it Pinky
Are you just interested in Acoustic/Vocal ?
Do you still have the original version of your song pre-reverb ?
When I tell people I play guitar I always go on to describe myself as a 'campfire guitarist' that is popular when the only other alternative is boredom :P
I describe myself as "a tone deaf wanker" who should only be allowed to sing if everyone else is deaf or listening to ipods at max volume :)

Haha, do you mind if I copy this in the future? :P
Sorry, just saw your request for Ain't No Rest for the Wicked - Cage the Elephant - dunno this song, I'll look it up and let you know ;) I will have a crack at anything just about. I even have Britney Spears in my repertoire FFS.
Maybe QGL should do a song ?
Each of us could do an instrument or something.
I only had the Wah pedal for 2 weeks never played one before.
I just want to use it all the time now, If you play guitar you really need to go and buy one.
The Peavey Sanpera uses Optical tracking like a mouse.

Pickup on the acoustic and a large diaphragm condenser on my vocal, fair bit of bleed into the vocal mic from the guitar tho. Just straight into ProTools, add verb, light compressor on the output and go.
You missed the first line of the OP, bud. Go back to YouTube where you and your hating friends hang.

Ok, cool.
I recorded Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ship Song with my mixer with a dynamic mic on vocals and condenser on the guitar (no pick-up). I have to cut it together a bit because I kept fucking up late in the song so I just did it in two takes and have to patch it together. WIll put up tonight.
That one above I just did with a USB condenser mic sitting somewhere between my guitar and my mouth.
If thats the style you were after then keep with it Pinky

Nah, not happy with the sound. I will do more.
I have to buy electric accoustic but maybe I can have a crack with the electric guitar and see how that goes.
Yep, I have orig. Will upload later tonight when I get back from a birthday.
This is the closest we've had to a compliment, so I'll take that.
My mate was just dealt, "To be honest - it's awful."
Hey pinky reckon you could do a cover of Helloween - I Want Out
Hahaha, I lived through the eighties and I have never heard this song - how does it have 7mil views!? Maybe it's a self-preservation mechanism that I can't remember ;)
Nah, I can't sorry. I at least have to basically know the song (like Chasing Cars I've been brainwashed by pop radio), otherwise it would take me too long.
in that case pinky, who am I to buck the system. your music is shit, you are shit, and as payment you must now do summer lovin' - both male and female lyrics :)
your audience demands it!
oh and I don't play any instruments, nor do I know anyone who does so me sitting here yodling into a mic with pc fans in the background isn't gonna happen any time soon.

You have to be joking!? You need to go to more weddings bud because it defies logic that anyone can actually like this song after listening to it their entire life.
Too much mixing, it's hiding mistakes and real ability. This is like the amateur version of being auto-tuned lol.
Upload some pure un-edited stuff guys.
pinky: I don't like it, infact I can't stand it. I just want to see you embarrass yourself :D
I was up at 6 because I hadn't been to bed yet.
Hahahaha. No, I think you are just saying this. You really like it - why else would you request it? I think you secretly want a threesome with Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.

Fair call. Challenge accepted.
Edit: Here you go, a cover of Bon Iver - Flume (minus the falsetto though). No editing. Just one condenser mic.
I sing better without because I can focus on singing. I just bash chords, I'm a rubbish guitar player. Yeah, just a cheapy nylon string I've had forever.
I have an electric as well - Jackson. Not sure exact model but maybe DK2M, something like that. Basically an entry level $400ish guitar, but sounds nice.
I can record with that through my USB mixer/preamp. Should give it a shot, hardly eve use it because it's just easier to pick up my accoustic which sits next to my desk on a guitar stand so whenever I'm bored I just pick it up and play some tunes.
I have a cheapy Peavey PV6, 4 channel USB mixer. Does the job. Has some basic levels - can control low/med/high ranges on two of the channels and low/high on the other two.
One trick with it was I had to buy a separate phantom power adapter because the phantom power on the mixer was only 8V or something (very poorly documented) and my 15V condenser was not working well at all. Solved that problem though which actually required me getting out my multimeter to measure the voltage across the mic socket (that's how poorly it was documented!).
I didn't use this mixer for the above though - I just used one USB mic. Actually, I might have in the first recording. Can't remember.
Anyway, I like the PV6 - does the very basic functionality that I would use.
