Daily Show and Colbert Report No Longer Accessible to Australians?!

So I was just doing my Sunday morning routine of catching up with The Daily Show and Colbert Report and I'm greeted with THIS:
"Sorry, this video is unavailable from your location."
I know full episodes have been geo-locked away from us but until now the clips have always worked. Not only that but I've been served AUSTRALIAN ADS while watching it.
Can someone else see if they can access it? Here's a recent clip: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-august-9-2011/sh-tzkrieg---anarchy-in-the-u-k-
Update with solution:
This youtube video explains how to work around it using Firefox and an add-on called Modify Headers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV8rdpF1qZs
edit: note that since this video was aired, the Modify Headers extension has changed and you need to "activate it" to make it work. See the first comment in the YouTube video for more details, but basically you need it to look like this:

It's not on iView any more either. WHAT SORT OF HELL HAVE I WOKEN UP TO THIS SUNDAY MORNING?
Edit: from ABC: "We love the shows (Colbert as well) but we have lost the rights to show them.
As a public broadcaster we often do not have the money to compete again our commercial rivals and unfortunately in this instance we could not afford to retain the rights to these programs.
However we will continue to find great shows from Australia and around the world to showcase on ABC2 "

Yes, but they only show half the interview piece, the "we will throw it up on the web" cant be accessed due to geolocking.

How many episodes are there per week ?
Foxtel has it on Mon-Fri nights but they seem to show a lot of repeats.

I dont understand the logic behind this sort of thing.
People who want to watch it will Torrent it for free.
Why wouldnt you at least make some Ad revenue out of hosting it in Australia somewhere ?

Why wouldnt you at least make some Ad revenue out of hosting it in Australia somewhere ? they were which is the strange thing, there were ads for australian products being served. so all I can assume is someones either bought the rights to FTA it, foxtel kicked up a stink, or they're mad as a hatter.

Somewhat related question here, does anyone take their shows/opinions seriously from a political point of view? I swear I get that impression sometimes.

Indeed. TDS and Colbert are probably better sources of news than the big ones in USA (Fox, etc). It's comedy/satire, but at lot of the stuff reported is pretty good.

Damnit, was struck once again by that once or so a month somebody links to an apparently-hilarious clip, only to find it blocked. >:(

I don't watch the show, and wouldn't go to it for news, but I think that comedy (particularly satire and parody) is often fantastic at showing something insightful about somebody or something. It takes cleverness to make something amusing, I doubt that that cleverness is always entirely uninsightful too. Many positions and arguments are absurd, and that's why they're funny once highlighted and called out for their hypocrisy no?

True. I don't understand how steam works in regard to regional activation all that well. There have been a few things on cdkey direct web sites that I've been tempted to buy, but have shied away when it said that it requires a VPN with a Russian IP or some such to activate. Once you do that, can you just play it from any location or with any IP?

I wonder if this would work with online purchases?
eg: Steam I would say almost certainly not; it is a pretty cheezy hack and I'm surprised that it works.
Basically all it does is inserts a fake header in your browser request that tells the website that you are behind a proxy and that your "real" IP address is some random IP in the USA.

eg: Steam I don't think it does, I tired it ages ago and I don't think it worked out, I think you saw the US store but when you went to secure http for checkout it reverted back.

1.Use Firefox and install an add-on called “Modify Headers“.
2.Using the add-on, add a header of “X-Forwarded-For” with a value of “12.13.14.15″ or any IP that you know is an IP address in the US.
3.Set the add-on to be “Always on” in the Options.
Colbert report is a must see!

It was working for me today. A week or so ago it stopped working. Realised that Modify Headers was not running and was no longer in menu. Found it and turned it back on and it's been working since.

Anytime I watch it I just end up rolling my eyes. You have to be prepared to suspend political judgment and enjoy the humour because if it is intended to be meaningful (if subliminal) commentary, it fails.

The extended interviews Stewart does on politics are some of the most insightful political commentary I've ever seen. Maybe you are missing the point?

I guess you could say you're circumventing their protection methods and violating some sort of trade agreement. Like how you always see stuff that's "not for sale outside of the US" (usually electronics because they run on different transmission frequencies or some rubbish).
On that same 'is it legal/moral' question, what if you use an adblocker to block the adverts that appear in online videos? Is that illegal yet? I mean without those ads, the videos you're watching wouldn't be free so it's got to be like you're kicking a granny in the face and stealing her handbag right? I'm sure that's what they would have you believe.

Finally figured this out, it's a change in Modify Headers - you need to 'start' it using the big button in the top left of the Modify Headers window.

I see that there's a temporary workaround using the FF extension to modify headers, but sooner or later they're going to figure that out and hook up some true ip based geoblocks. I'm amazed it still works after all this time really.
And since there's already a 1 post noob plugging another service I figured I'd mention that http://VPNSecure.me is awesome. We have West Coast USA servers for good performance from AU to USA, and offer OpenVPN/PPTP/L2TP/HTTP Proxies & now new SSH Tunnels for accessing any geoblocked services worldwide :)
Edit: Oh and it's unlimited bandwidth for all but the AU servers too last edited by smashcrab at 22:57:13 28/Jan/12
