What the fuck is it with these companies and whats the deal with more and more movies being "3d" only?
The technology is complete shit, it looks crap and its uncomfortable to watch with the 20c glasses they give you
I really hope that they don't start releasing all movies in 3D one day, unless the technology matures a great deal - cause right now its complete ballsaq

my home cinema setup is on par with what the cinemas are offering and it costs me nothing to go watch it
no wonder people pirate movies, seriously
my home cinema setup is on par with what the cinemas are offering and it costs me nothing to go watch it
Unlikely.
I'm for stereo 3D, but not anaglyph. As a myopic person (both in opinions[sic] and in sight), I have found that your correction from eyewear needs to be spot-on for 3D to even work.
As if buy water.
teq, look outside, THERE ARE KIDS ON YOUR LAWN!!!!
I saw an Imax once in Sydney, it was pretty crap if I'm honest
I can't remember what we paid for it but it was too much, most of us have a 40+" screen in our home these days right?
my home cinema setup is on par with what the cinemas are offering and it costs me nothing to go watch it
Ignoring how much it costs to set-up a home cinema that is 'on-par' with a cinema?
Screen
Amp
Speakers
Lounges
Portion of cost of house for the dedicated room
I'm honestly surprised that people bother with dedicated home cinema rooms. The few houses I've been to that have them I thought were shit - but that's just me :/ And I watch fuck all movies.
I've never been to Gold Class, I can't believe what they charge for that. Maybe if it was a movie I knew was good and went for a while (2hrs+) I might cough up, but most movies these days are balls and only go for 90 minutes anyway so no biggie.
Stopped going to the cinema years ago, but have recently been going again as I have been getting a free ticket or two every month through my MBF membership. The choice of cinemas is limited (have been driving from Morningside to Sunnybank), but hey it's a free ticket. It's a fairly nice cinema, seats are fairly comfy, and I bring my own bottle of water, so it's a pretty cheap afternoon/night. I try and pick a movie that has been out for a few weeks too so I don't have to share the cinema with too many other people.
But yeah, if I had the money for a sweet home theatre set up, I would never pay for a movie again, regardless of the 3D aspect. Hell, I'd prefer to watch something on my 10 inch netbook than pay for a movie these days.
my preference these days is to watch movies at my mate's place who has a 1080p projector, 2nd choice would be at home on the lcd, 3rd choice would be any other mate's or relative's place & absolute last is the cinema!~ :P i totally agree that 3d with the shitty red/blue glasses is a waste of time.
last movie i saw at the cinema was sin city when it came out. awesome movie but the experience was fucked by this fat woman who brought her 3 kids... like wtf!? how do you get kids into an r-rated movie... & why would ya?!!?? :(
the food & drink is a total ripoff. i used to just put a can of coke n some muesli bars in my pockets n sneak em in. cinemas can all go diaf! :D
Yeah going to the movies for me are very few and far in between. I'll only go to the cinemas if i'm seriously hanging out for a blockbuster movie, and i can't remember the last time i was really hanging out for a blockbuster movie. Price is another story all together.
$1 rentals on tuesdays on high def surround sound within the comfort of my own home ftw.
p.s. I did get some free tickets emailed to me last week for being a member of some student texbook website. Booked two seats for an advanced screening of Paranormal Activity.
I don't see cinema rage here i see BirchCarrolCoyleGreaterUnionEvent cinema rage here.
Just go to a nice independant or Cineplex or AMC, that fixes nearly all your problems.
FYI i stopped going to BirchCarrolCoyleGreaterUnionEvent cinemas 5 years ago when i realised that they're shit and I will now only go to Cineplex or AMC cinemas, as they're cheaper AND better.
Haha BCC, such a ripoff joint. Goto the smaller ones and be much happier. Might not be as comfortable but the service and prices blow BCC out of the water.
I'm honestly surprised that people bother with dedicated home cinema rooms.
why? in the grand scheme of things its not really that expensive if you've got a spare room in the house
some people dedicate their spare room to ironing, some to computers, some to movies
its not hard to create surround sound and buy some comfy chairs
our movie room even has those thick dark red curtains you see at the movies (and very thick red carpet) just for that authentic look and feel
when you factor in how many movies you watch over a long enough time frame, it pays for its self
that said, I still somehow end up in a position where I go to the movies once in a while (particularly during that magnum goldclass promotion where you get goldclass @ normal ticket price) and always leave disappointed
Cineplex defo, or it used to be laptop balanced on a chair at the end of the bed with significant other, tell me that's not more comfy than gold class.
Like I said, I just don't watch many movies. I'm happy enough watching a movie in the living room with decent sound. (I have a surround sound but haven't bothered hooking up the rear speakers - mainly because our room isn't right for it)
I'd rather a room set-up for music and general shenanigans rather than a room set-up to watch tv.
Most home cinemas I've seen are small dark and dingy rooms that aren't at all inviting - normally converted bedrooms with the crap crammed in there. You need a big arse room imo.
It's so much more comfortable to watch movies at home, whether you have your own set up or not. You not only don't have to pay however much it is these days, but you can choose when you want to see it, exactly what you want to see, pause it for toilet breaks, don't have to put up with the other shitheads in the cinemas, and change movies halfway through is it's terrible.
That said, I am almost tempted to buy gold class tickets for Time Travelers Wife - I have been hanging out for this movie for 10 months!
For blockbuster movies with shitloads of explosions* and noise I go to the movies, as the sound will drown out all the teenage fuckwits chatting and giggling all the time.
For movies that require an IQ, I tend to watch them at home - nice and quiet for the full effect.
* = this video sums up the types of movies I go to the cinema for:
I caught Up in 3D and thouroughly enjoyed it. Saw it in gold class, but only because of the magnum ice-cream deal that brought it down to a reasonable price. it was still ridiculous how may additionly surcharges they weaseled in there though.
I'm for stereo 3D, but not anaglyph.
3D movies at modern cinemas do not use analglyph. In the case of Event Cinemas (birch/greater union) they use RealD tech, which is polarised - teq, if you find the disposible glasses uncomfortable (I don't) they are actually starting to market reusable designer ones for fussy people such as yourself.
The problem with 3D movies at present is that studios are jumping on the bandwagon too soon and making movies 3D that shouldn't be - like My Bloody Valentine or whatever it was and The Final Destination. Live-action films that are shot with 2D cameras and artificially adapted to 3D in post. The end result being complete shit and tarnishing the tech for upcoming movies that are doing it properly.
CG films like Up and Toy Story 3 are of course rendered properly and they look great. Then upcoming movies like Avatar and TinTin are being filmed with proper 3D camera tech so they should also look great - unlike the current ilk of 3D live-action films.
I to saw up in 3d.. the misses enjoyed it.. wasnt to bad.. that shrek shit at movie world burns it tho.. only because of the little extras.. water being sprayed... stuff under the seats and what not
I would be happy to partake in a 3D movie if they set out to make the movie in 3D from the get-go
and I don't think being comfortable (crappy 3d glasses) is fussy
funny you should mention Final Destination 4, it just doesn't need to be in 3D
when did films stop being about the quality of scenes / director ability and become more about how fancy you can make the whole taped-together piece of shit look
Just a nice little set up in the lounge with surround sound is good enough for me. Nice comfy chair and dont have to deal with kids with laser pointers.
The high prices are because people are still prepared to pay them. I haven't been to an opening night for ages but I assume they are still crowded as shit.
I've been to maybe 5 movies this whole year, probably a record low for me. I'm just sick of the bullshit at cinemas, pretty much all the reasons you described teq.
I went a couple weeks ago to see District 9 and formulated a new theory - that the people that work there are actually told to fuck around and take as long as possible and generally waste your time so that you finally cave next time and drop the extra $1 on Internet bookings so you don't have to put up with that sort of bullshit. And then you get there and it costs a fucking fortune.
I'm voting with my feet and going to El Dorado and waiting for the DVD release now. I only ever go to BCC on "cheap" Tuesdays these days anyway.
im going to the movies tonight....havent been in years..
last time i went was terrible.
all the reasons listed in the OP helped draw this conclusion.
but this is for a friends birthday, and the tickets are free...
theyd wanna be though, the movie is 'whip it' :(
It stops people filming them in the cinema. Expect it to become the norm.
Does anyone actually care about about camjobs any more? Who would actually voluntarily watch a shitty camjob when you could wait a week and get a DVD-quality rip from some jilted studio exec who sold a copy to some punk kid

shit prices, shit food, shit people, shits too loud, too cold and then to top it off, 9/10 moofies are garbage that make me angry i wasted my time watching them
so last nights movie experience was ok.
i cant believe its like $16 to go these days.
lucky i had the free tickets.
but i enjoyed the mango madness smoothie. the candy bar range is pretty shit though. like cliche as.
why dont they just make the seats a little further apart and put footrests on the back of the seat in front?
after a 2 hour movie, my joints feel like ive driven a mack truck to byron bay.
ohm and i take back the 'whipt it' thumbs down.
pretty good movie, with juliette lewis funny as.
and yeah, those cineplex monsters are gross as. i havent been to one since kill bill 2 and now i know why.
hawthorne/balmoral ftw.
so is it true that james cameron is puttin money into developing 3d for tv so that when avatar comes out on dvd, people will be able to watch it in 3d at home?
i heard that somewhere
I just have one thing to say to all you jerks who continue to fight and rebel against allocated seating
Allocated seating just gives those that roll up during the opening credits one more way of being douches to those that arrive at the posted session time.
I turn up after the ads sometimes, and in unallocated seating unless you're really lucky you can generally predict the punishment is the getting seats no-one else wants. For example, the seriously shitty front rows of some cinemas at the south bank 5 cineplex.
Seriously, who designs a movie theatre where the seats are less than 2 metres away from the screen and off on some distorted angle so that you need to stare almost directly at the ceiling just to watch the movie?!
