Interesting...
Linky
Nissan haven't approved the 5% ethanol blend for use in pre-2004 vehicles, but I can't see why our cars wouldn't be fine on it - might need to replace fuel lines earlier but so what?
Anyway, will be interesting to see if it offers better knock prevention and power (as it should).
Oh, and you can get it from these stations: click me now

I think I'll be sticking with BP Ultimate for now.
It's probably just in my head, but the car seems to run better on it than it does on Optimax.

not worth the hassle of having to tune for it and then being stuck with it
wont be good for fuel lines either
latest ep of hpi has a write up on it and it was good for 16rwkw on a r32 gtr over 98 ron
BUT FOR HOW LONG?

its hard trying to be objective, but over time ive basically made it fall into the order optimax > ultimate > vortex
oh i hear on the grapevine, that mobil are bringing out a 100+ octane fuel, somewhere around the 104/105 mark.

Maybe its so extreme the car needs new tuning :)
But serious, is vortex any good? Theres a woolies servo just down the road (*shudder*... i know) but I heard some workshop like nizpro it might have been uses it in their cars. Just it would be really convient with the location.
Guess it wouldnt hurt to try

vortex was 94, now they are coming out with a vortex 98
ultimate is 98.1, optimax is 98.9
optimax extreme is apparently 100, and mobil premiumuberslaw (TBA) is 105ish

oh, and bp and shell have intermediate premiums at 95, and standard at 91.

where have you got the numbers for the 2 fuels from?
i have seen the apparent differences between the 2 and optimax has a higher aromatic percentage apparently (ultimate = 2%, optimax = 5%)
the mobil synergy fuel isn't in queensland yet (is that what you are talking about?) and is 98
|
Tung

the catchphrase when they came out was optimax had the highest octane of any australian fuel, with 98.9.
it isnt the synergy one, its a development fuel, albeit this information was about a year old when i was talking to a guy that worked in mobil marketing at a party, he said that there was an increased demand to bring in a 100+ octane, and it would happen in the next couple of years. i wonder if that has been changed to synergy now :/
Okay, looking at the shell website, it no longer says 98.9 :/ i swear i remembered there being a diff between the two, shell billing themselves as the highest octane petrol avaialble with 98.high numbers. checking bp site, says 98 too... blargh.
guess i was wrong, or that was a marketing ploy and had to wind it back :/

The general consensus I have seen from a few forums, is that Optimax and Ultimate are very simular, except for one main difference. Optimax goes "off" more quickly i.e. loses it's octane rating due to the way it is made.
You can get 98octane vortex in qld, but I have not tried it.

hence why they say ultimate gets you more km's i guess monkey. thats an interesting statement, i want to know the stuff behind it, any linkies?

possibly that
vertex 98 is apparently 5% aromatics as well
more than likely thats toluene
ultimate does it differently
interestingly mixing more toluene into your fuel (i think 10% makes 100octane) makes the car run too rich, which may account for people saying ultimate gives better kms

I use Vortex thanks to the woolies servo down the road and have also used a few tanks in succession of bp ultimate. Can't say I notice the difference.
ALso, if any of you guys do use vortex they are running a comp for free fuel on the caltex site so keep your receipt and enter! :)

Theres a woolies servo just down the road (*shudder*... i know) You're a fucking dickhead burt and prove you know fuck all about anything, go to a mechanic and pay to get your work done you unknowledgable woman.
It's been proven that supermarket servo's use the same quality fucking fuel as everywhere else, fuel regulations are strict in Australia.
Is it true that independents and supermarkets often have "dodgy" fuel?
Many people are under the incorrect impression that some fuel retailers sell fuel that is of sub-standard quality.
All fuel in Western Australia has to comply with very stringent fuel quality standards.
In fact the WA standards are the most stringent in Australia and within our region.
Those standards are administered by the Department of Environment Protection. For more information about the standards contact this Department.
There are also Commonwealth standards in place (administered by Environment Australia) that are very similar to the WA standards.
All fuel sold in WA is required by law to comply with the State and Commonwealth standards. Where those standards conflict the requirement is to comply with the more stringent of the two standards.
As well as this, WA has quite unique supply arrangements for petrol. BP operates the only refinery in the State at Kwinana and a very high proportion of the petrol sold in WA (90%+) is produced at that facility.
There are a small number of petrol imports that occur from time to time, however these are generally from either eastern states or Singapore refineries. The same requirement to comply with State and Commonwealth fuel quality standards applies to those imported products.
Of course it is possible that adulteration of the fuel can occur as it moves along the supply chain between the refinery and the consumer. If you have concerns about the quality of fuel at a particular site it may be a good idea to raise your concerns with the site manager in the first instance.
That said, I still don't go to them either, but I wouldn't pretend like they have bad fuel that's going to OH NOES BLOW UP MY FULSIK RAD SKYLINE.
P.s. WA is the same as QLD last edited by Loki at 12:44:43 14/Dec/05

I've got a tank of the extreme juice running in my car. I definitely notice a bit more torque down low, which means its burning just a touch cleaner than the BP Ultimate i used to run.
But it hasn't been on a dyno to prove the difference between fuels. Might give CNJ Motorsport a call and see what they think about the fuel as they always recommended optimax for most of their customers cars.
