Hi as per subject i am chasing some IP cams, they need to be IR + POE and under $300

theres so many choices on google, ebay etc..

any products/places people can recommend?

Geovision and Vivotek are both sold by Altech, I have only personally used the Geovision ones. Cant complain about them at all. Had the usual faulty couple due t o water (bad installation) but that's about it. Not sure what they are selling for these days as I dont have an account with them any more.

I'll be looking to buy a system to install in my new house as well, but when I looked at them at the home show there was a variety of options ranging from $1200 to $2500 for four-camera set-ups.

In addition to the cameras, does anyone want to recommend a dedicated DVR that also does the "normal" stuff these days like streaming to remote locations, remote access/viewing, tagging motion-sensed sections of video tracks, playback etc?

in terms of IP cameras they still sell vivotek and geovision (and megapixel versions too) - between $250-$300 there is a few 2MP IP cameras or more 1.3MP ones below (just looking @ geovision/vivotek prices.. haven't used. - my CCTV setup is analogue, so no review here)

do0b, bear in mind that the MP ones are 30fps 1280 x 1024 res for 1.3MP, and 30fps 1920 x 1080 for 2MP - so you will obviously pay more for this than the <$100 0.3MP ones with 15fps 640 x 480. Deciding on which to get should be determined by what detail you need to capture and at what distance

depends on budget and setup type (i.e. all analogue, all IP).

I used a geovision 8ch pci card + geovision's software 8 years ago running on a windows machine and it was great back then (ran it for about 6 years).. so it's probably much better now and they have Network DVR's (which support 3rd party cameras).

Eventually to reduce power consumption I got a 8ch DVR off ebay which can do most of things you described for $100. It is stable and works well, based on linux, the remote (activex browser controls) side of it is a bit shit but does the job. But being a fully analogue camera setup I can only imagine that things would be much nicer with a fully networked (cameras+nvr) setup..

If possible i'd avoid any wireless cameras since they can be jammed. I would/did a DIY job on it too (rather than packaged) which can save you a lot of money if you have the time to research and setup.

Give some options. Considering I've been looking at $1200-$2500 anyway for a 4 camera system, I'm happy to look at options in that range.
Preference is to digital >=720p cameras. PoE is a nice-to-have.
I *do not* want a PC running sofware/cards to do the trick, I'll only look at dedicated hardware.

Note: I haven't listed any of the below based on personal experience with the specific equipment listed, just suggesting as ideas for raven to start looking.

Alright, rather than pricing up geovision stuff from altech I just did a quick ebay search for NVR and set it to >$100. With the NVR's I guess the biggest purchase risk over analogue setups is whether or not all IP cameras will be compatible - so find this out early on as your NVR choice may influence your cameras choice.

If I was setting up a system again i'd start compiling a list of whats available and compare the features for price. There is a some well known brands with NVRs in the >$1000 range (e.g. qnap, samsung). The thing with geovision is while they have hardware NVR's ready to go - it is easily cheaper to buy the software and put a pc together for it. Minimal price for their 'lite' NVR (hardware) would be $800~. Vivotek have NR8201, 4ch NVR around the $600~ range (altech).

In terms of cameras I guess you'd need to decide on what the chosen NVR will support and go from there. It seems that most megapixel IP cameras will support POE and you could get an injector cheap for them as required.

All I can say is, for the $57 it's not bad, but you can't watch live video while connected with wifi, the cpu can't take it and the camera crashes. Also the software is atrocious. But for a little bit of fun it was well worth it. I have been spying on the pets and maybe plan to mount it outside to watch the front yard but the requirement of a network cable is making me rethink that.

It's more likely that I would put all the IP cameras on their own isolated physical network, with a single port allowed access to the 2821. The DVR would sit on the same side of that network, allowing it to be completely isolated from all other data and VoIP/SIP traffic.

That's pretty cool - I'll keep that in mind... but I'll be running a Cisco PoE NM, so it will probably be largely unnecessary.
Matt is keen on using RouterBoard gear rather than Cisco though.

They do motion detection on set areas so you can point it out the front door and if it detect someones feet it will start recording, not every time someone drives past. On some of the cameras they have an alarm input so you can hook it up to the doorbell so it take a photo every time someone rings the door bell.

I have a couple of camera's from Kiirie you can stick a sd card on them and just have them record that way if you put a small ups on your poe switch and someone turn's your power off you will still get an alert. They also sell 4 channel pvr's for as little as $50. it all comes from china anyway so you might as well buy direct.
