What GPU should I buy $500 or under?

I'm running dual monitors, might be adding another, primarily for work but wouldn't mind the option of running games well if I feel like it.
Not super worried about keeping the cost down, but won't buy a 690.
Should I just get a 670 or something or should I be waiting for the 660?
Not super up on current gaming cards so would appreciate any direction

i tell the ATO my GPU is for work too. i am over paying $500 for vid cards when the last generation one does virtually the same thing. i just bought a 560 for $179, works sweet for bf3.

670 is a pretty beefy card, but you know what always performs well for it's price? x60's. Still should support the three monitors on a single card and so on. If you've got an ok mobo, then if you get a little power hungry in 12 months time buying a second for SLi won't be hard.
Although i'm over SLi myself, too much worries about heat. Although i think that's because 470's run a bit hot.

nVidia 570's are still going quite strong against current marketed games, I've got one and am contemplating a second for 3 monitor support. I've thrown everything at it so far and it works exceptionally well, especially in ARMA 2.

The problem with that, is that when it comes out you may as well wait until the next thing comes out. Repeat x 10.

I will not be buying an NVIDIA card until they do something about GPU Scaling. Their implementation is broken.
I'm considering this ATI card for my next machine.

For ~$340 I'd go 7870
For ~$450 the GTX670
Depends if you need the $110 for something else.
The ATI is potentially slightly better for multiscreen large 2D workspaces because of the larger memory pool. 2GB vs 1.5BG.
The Nvidia might have better pretties in games that have Physx.
And in part recommending a card depends on the resolution of the monitors (virtual desktop) as well. If you are playing on a 1080p 24". I don't think it really matters that much. If you are playing on a 27" 2560 x 1440 ... Then even a 670 might struggle in a new game with everything on full.
And to a certain degree, what you are playing, Quake (1) plays well on anything, except an S3.
As an aside. In case someone says go a sli or crossfire.
I have crossfired 6950s ... And while most of the time xfire support is good, they can take their time supporting certain games, and usually it requires fullscreen mode most of the time(true for SLI as well). (i.e. I partially regret going crossfire now).
I am tempted to get a gtx670... Must control urges ...

LOL, what?
2 monitors @ 1920x1280, triple buffered are barely going to break 0.5GB.
You don't even need to concern yourself with multiple viewports, because only FireGL and Quadro support them. And you're talking 2D.
Wouldn't you care more about the RAMDAC here, being the limited factor?

S3 would still be quicker than Intel HD4000 :P
If you're using an S3, just put it on software rendering. Software rendering, timedemo1 on a Core i7 3770. What do you reckon, 20,000fps?

Hey, I have a 4MB PCI Diamond Viper V330 - an nVidia Riva (NV3) card.
Don't think I have any PCI slots to test it in though... or Windows 7 drivers ;P

I think I've still got my 16MB Voodoo 2 card somewhere as well.
We should have a LAN and SLI our cards to get the maximum frames possible Whoop.

16MB ? I thought they were 12MB tops ... given I paid $1500 for my SLI rig at the time (or about 3 weeks pay) I hope I am right

I think you will find 16MB was possible in specs, but in reality never existed.
8 and 12MB were it. Banshee came out in 16MB, but a banshee was not a voodoo2.

No. I will not, i'll just be a slight bit jealous that my 2x470's run too well to justify replacing. Otherwise i would have made the same choice :P

If you don't get a Windforce Gigabyte you have rocks in your head.
For about $30 you are getting near 680 performance.
