Just wanted to know if any peeps on here have had any experience with mixing different ram on the same mobo.
In general you can't predict the outcome. Anyone (who is not the manufacturer) telling you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.
The 3 most common outcomes are:
1. Lucky: the mixture will result in no problems whatsoever and 100% stability.
2. Less lucky: you'll pick up errors during Memtest
and know the mixture won't work.
3. Unlucky: Memtest will say it's OK but you'll run into completely random blue screens. I've had this problem many times!
Best thing to do in my opinion, short of not mixing, is to ensure you bump up the DDR voltage in the BIOS settings if you're using 4 sticks (due to extra power draw on that rail). I think I have mine set to 1.6-1.65V, when they're rated at 1.5V. Adds extra stability without causing any dramas.
Won't guarantee anything. If you're worried about stability, then as I hinted just get a 2x8GB kit and be done with it. Cost me $109 for a ripjaws kit and checking just now they're still at that price.
What on Earth do you need 16GB of RAM for? Maybe in five years.
I'm moving up to 32GB on my next rig. Sick of the machine locking up and not accepting user input when it's used up its 16GB.last edited by parabol at 19:58:11 19/Jul/12
