Looking at purchasing SSD drive what do you think of this? Seems like a good price, i have bought from them before i bought 5 x 3TB hard drive when they were on special last year

I had a Crucial M4 fail, but I was one of the unlucky ones supposedly. I'd buy it. Just treat it like it's going to fail.

I also have a lot of trust issues with SSD's, I've seen plenty fail at work, mostly the OCZ's (no Crucials yet). As Pinky mentioned, treat the drive as if it will fail, you'll be thankful you did if it ever does. In terms of a drive with reasonable capacity that I rely on at home on my gaming PC is the Segate Momentus XT hybrid drive, not quite as fast as an ssd but still noticably faster than a standard hdd.

They had the M4 250 gig for $200 about a month ago on ozbargin. I was pissed off I never got one because a week late my master ssd failed.

My OCZ loves to corrupt the OS for unknown reasons every so often. Yet its not losing capacity and I can find no other faults with it.
I don't store anything except the OS on it for this very reason, its been dodgy since day 1.
Wouldn't personally touch another OCZ.

Seems like intel based SSDs are still a little bit more reliable than their cheaper competitors, at least from what I've read over the last few years.

I went to update the sandforce thingy the day I got it but then when I tried to update it apparently already had the latest and fixed version.
I'm not too concerned.. nothing on it that can't be replaced and it still works perfectly other than that. Been doing it since day 1. shrug

do Crucial M4's come with the firmware fix already loaded in now or do you still have to DL and burn the ISO and do it yourslef?

couldn't agree more (if you're talking C-M4's or Intels) - though that said, an SSD upgrade is a good way to fast-track the death of a cheapy (or unreliable) motherboard.

I blue screen once every couple of months and then it won't detect the ssd when it reboots. Turn it off and on and it's there again!

that's exactly what turned me off them when I had easy access to them @ a previous workplace.

still - I would often take home a client's SSD (that was reported dodgy), ghost my own gaming PC OS onto it and use it flawlessly all weekend. It's hard to think it's not something else going on with the client's machine if I can't replicate the fault..

sometimes, we just have to accept that we lack the resources to test every option to get to the root of the issue..

it might just be something else in your PC causing the problem

Just so everyone is aware the Intel 520 drives are based on SandForce. However they've got Intel's strict quality control behind it, so they've fixed most of the bugs that have plagued the other manufacturers - even those that Sandforce themselves were unaware of. I think they spent a year on getting the firmware/hardware stable before releasing the drives, which I think is pretty cool.

Was about to get one, but I want to do full-drive encryption (with Truecrypt) for a laptop. Sandforce relies on compression for much of its speed, and encrypting a drive like that makes compression almost impossible - so you get a big performance hit. So the M4 may be the way to go if anyone is looking to encrypt their drive, as they don't rely on compression for performance.

Good so far. But then again it hasn't been out for that long. I remember the OCZ/Corsair drives had great reviews when they first came out, before people accumulated enough crashes to realise something was up with the drives themselves.

If you want to play it safe, go the M4 as that's kicking all the drives in terms of reviews/reliability. But I think the Intel ones won't be bad either - they typically sell reliable products overall.

Corsair force 3 here as well, awesome drive, megga fast game load times, windows runs faster smoother, movie editing is sped up, windows boot time is reduced alot, less noise from pc, damn thing cant cook bacon and eggs for me but !
Get an ssd if your a gamer.Run windows off if.
