So, who likes what? I'm after a tablet to browse facebook/imdb while watching TV and to check the TV guide with etc. I like apple stuff and android stuff equally, got a macbook and an ipod and my phone is android powered, I buy whatever best suits the purpose no matter who makes it. My PC is a beast of a gaming thing and frankly it's too power hungry and not portable enough to sit on my lap while watching TV. I'd use the MBP but it's also rather large (15") and not really suitable for a chair side table while watching TV.

So, brands, models, os's versions, etc, what to avoid, what to look out for and which models are worth making sweet sweet love to?

I'm leaning towards an android based device because there's a mad ass remote program in android that lets me control my TV and it's fun being able to control my TV from any room in the house using my Desire, though I hear you can do the same with iPhones but I couldn't find any apps in the app store on my MBP, do iphones/ipads get a different app store to macs/macbooks?

Will a mobile phone android app run on a tablet?

Requirements: Not too big (no 15" tablet PC's)
Good battery life (macbook pro lasts about 5 hours so a tablet should last at LEAST this long not having a traditional HDD and a smaller screen)
Fast. If I'm going to drop some serious coin on something I won't put up with a snail.
Must have wifi, don't need 3g.
Up in the air about SD slots & USB slots.

I'm running an Asus transformer 101 with IceCreamSandwich on it. I grabbed the 32GB version with add-on keyboard so it has like 16 hours of battery life with normal use.

Haven't had any problems running phone apps on the tablet at all though I haven't checked every app out there and oyu might want a different one to what I have checked.

I would say this is fine for what you want to use it is. Though also check out the transformer Prime as it's newer and has a better processor etc.

iPad 2 you won't be disappointed.

Must have wifi, don't need 3g.

I thought this with my first iPad. then we went on a holiday and wifi wasn't as prevalent as I had thought. I'd go 3g to future proof it, as I did with my iPad 2, and you don't even need a plan. I pay $30 for a month/2GB worth when I think I'm going to need it.

I control my Home Theatre from my iPad but that doesn't mean you get an app for your stuff. although chances are someone will make one.

Will a mobile phone android app run on a tablet?

should do if it's a android tablet. although resolution may be s*** if it's designed for phone only, same happens with iPhone/iPad apps. Skype used to have an iPhone only app at first and it looked crap on iPad, usable but crap.

over all since you not a rabid anti Apple hater i reckon the iPad has much more options for apps and the only really 'drawback' is no usb or slots. but i used these '' because i don't find it a drawback. i have a 32GB one and can easily transfer enough videos, music, etc to watch during an extended trip. in fact i had 2 seasons of a TV show on mine when we went to Italy and purchase the VGA output adaptor and watched them on TV in our apartment.

edit to mention battery life - very good on basic use. mine can last 2-3 days. basic means some games, net surfing (which includes the occasional you tube or imdb movie preview and QGL embedded videos) more full on video watching?....mmmm

well i've done some TED's on a plane and it was fine and didn't need an urgent recharge on a 3 hour flight. watching those TV eps in Italy was fine also. sometime we'd watch 2-3 back to back. i haven't really tested this fully but I'm going with great!

3g is good but u can always teether it to ya phone.. My question is what phone do you have? If you have iphone i would defintely recommend a ipad as you dont have to go out re-purchase the apps again and with android the same deal.

I have ipad 1 and my parents ipad 3 and i really love it.

I should have mentioned I don't need it to have any docks or keyboards, the point is to be as thin, light and portable as possible. If I wanted something with a keyboard I'd just stick to using my MBP. Transformer isn't out of the question but what's the battery life like with just the screen bit?

If I were to go on holiday I wouldn't bother taking the tablet. I don't get why people feel the need to cart their worldly possessions all over the world. Spare clothes, passport, money, camera + a bunch of spare SD/CF cards. What more do you need?

I control my Home Theatre from my iPad but that doesn't mean you get an app for your stuff. although chances are someone will make one.
That's why I was leaning towards an android tablet, the app that I want already exists, I know it exists and I know it works and has 2 versions, one I think is for tablets.

what's your TV make I'll do an app store search from my iPad

If I were to go on holiday I wouldn't bother taking the tablet.

i hear what your saying but this was so small and insignificant it fit in my day back pack when we went touring around on day trips, i bought a local wifi hotspot thingy for the local Italian network. so it was handy for maps, looking up local stuff, passing the time on planes and trains, but specially in your case, and ours, for a quick review of pics taken. there is an adaptor for sd cards. was great to see them on the screen. plus like i said watching the odd tv show or movie at night.

tbh our first one was purchased for the exact same reasons you state, we wanted to sit on the couch and not lug out a laptop and power, wait till it starts up, then when you find something worth sharing pass it over to someone else while untangling cords. so when our personal laptops died we just got the iPad, probably because it was the best known at the time. we flog imdb and the tv guide!

what ever you get i'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Asus Transformer Prime ticks all those boxes, and cheaper then current iPads/iPad 2. It works out of the box, exceptional battery life, WiFI, SD slots, USB slots, flash, any android program on the market has worked flawlessly. The bonus is that you get a keyboard dock that increases the battery life to 16 hours, and replaced my laptop. I would recommend this well over a Apple product because you get more bang for buck and a greater arsenal of apps. That and customisation is far superior. Also it Android has a very large amount of apps, maybe even more then Apple does, but a majority actually are useful and I've found more on the Android that can actually do more in regards to permissions and capability compared to Apple products.

tv: samsung series 6 LED. I searched the app store on my macbook for "samsung" but it found nothing, that's why I asked if maybe an ipad/iphone gets a different version of the app store with different apps. Like when you get a mobile version of a website on a phone vs the full version on a computer.

As for an SD adapter, if the tablet has a USB slot, I've got an all in one card reader that I could just plug in and use to read pretty much any removable storage thing ever. However I don't see me ever wanting to use USB slots on the tablet, the only thing I'd use an SD slot for (or micro SD) would be to add storage like I have with my phone so I can store more apps on it.

edit: ok got the article to load. Basically they're saying android tablets suck because the apps aren't as good? This throws me into a hardcore nerd rage at apple fanboys, who the editor is clearly one of. Saying that an entire platform sucks just because one aspect of another platform is better is f*****g stupid.

Have a look at the Samsung Slate

http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-pc/slate-pc

I5 processor, 4 gig of ram, 7 hours of battery life. I've seen one in the flesh, and the wake from sleep time is about 3 seconds, the boot time from full power off is like, 15-20 seconds.

Only catch is your paying $1200-$1400 (ignore RRP on samsung site, plenty to be had for less).

They don't say android tablets suck. They say the apps on android tablets suck. There are a few exceptions but sadly most developers just don't put the effort into the android apps like they do for iOS. Most apps are just phone apps not optimised for tablets and that lets the whole experience down. If you had the quota to look at the pictures sited as examples you'd see what he was on about and there's no denying it.

Yeah, not planning on paying that much for what will be used as a glorified TV guide/tv remote. I will use it for light internet browsing at times but for the most part it'll just be used to look at news stuff, check what's on tv, etc.
http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/samsung-remote/id359580639?mt=8

same one that's on my android phone, don't think it's a tablet version.

So is the itunes app store and the osx app store different? I searched for that in the osx app store thing and it wasn't there. I call shenanigans upon apple.

edit: screw it, it takes like 5 minutes lo load the itunes store on capped-as-f***™ internets. I'll come back to this thread after the 28th. In the mean time, apple fanbois and android lovers feel free to fight amongst yourselves while I sit back and watch.

That is just purely subjective to the user. The Android system provides a helluva lot of apps now, and I have yet to hit a dead end when looking for certain objectives/uses. Also the Android OS is gaining a larger market value now compared to the iOS which is slowly falling behind because people are realising that the iPhones are locked behind technical gates plus the added modifiability that androids offer.

Whoop, my Transformer Prime runs on 8 hours of battery life without the dock, which I consider perfect when the charging cable can be plugged into any USB slot to re-charge. Also it auto-adjusts brightness dependent of time and weather I believe.

So one of these: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-tf300t-32gb-transformer-pad-dock-white.html then? The prime is about $800 - $900 where I've looked and this seems like it'll do the job. Don't need the keyboard dock but most sites seem to have them as a combo thing so might as well get it on the off chance it comes in handy.

Whoop, I did a lot of research into tablets about 2 months ago for my work who does a lot of testing of mobile phones and tablets that are not even released yet. After all the check lists and testing from ipads to android tablets, by far the Transformer Prime TF201 smashed everything.

Battery life on the tablet (without dock) sits around 12 hours and with the keyboard dock it gives it another 6 hours battery life (18 in total). It runs the new Nvidia Quad core CPU. the tablet itself has a micro SD card slot and with the keyboard dock it has a full size SD card slot as well plus a USB port to use a mouse.

Its running ICS 4.0.3 at the moment and I have to say that i was worried coming from 3.0.x honeycomb that was made for tabs to ICS that it wont feel like a tablet...but it still feels like a tablet and runs very very well and smooth.

One of the guys at work after the testing went directly to harvey norman and got it for a little over a grand with 3 years replacement warranty...all he has to do is take it back to the store and if there is a fault they replace it on the spot for 3 years...cant ask much more then that!

Same. It's good. Plus porn sites work properly.

Biggest boon is that it's perfect for travel. It's so light that it doesn't eat your whole cabin luggage allowance, and is 100x more functional than a traditional netbook without having the super slow processing of the netbook.

Friend and i have a ipad and the transformer, and there's not really much difference tbh. He likes his apple because there's more KORG official apps there (music lovers hate android i suppose) but otherwise for reading, watching and so on they're similar. The only difference is he doesn't browse forums and I do, which means the tablet with a dock wins for me every time.

The thing is, you don't need apps for almost every example in that slideshow. The actual webpages work. Just use the web pages.

Edit: I've got a question for the apple guys because i don't have anything right now to test on; but my father can't invite people to meetings from his iphone. Is this because it's not connected with an exchange account and that field is hidden because of that?

Edit2: yes. That's the answer, when you add exchange account then it becomees visible. I should have googled it instead of typing that out but i was triggered to ask because of the thread. Cool.

Without the dock mine lasts around 8-9 hours of standard use. Less if I watch a bunch of youtube or other videos but for standard browsing like IMDB and facebook the battery should last your a good 9 hours.

I would suggest getting the version with the dock and leaving the dock in your bedroom for night time surfing if you can't be bothered to get out of bed.

I have devices with iOS and Android. I find Android is much easier to use - more like using a PC OS. For example, on Android you could torrent a media file, play that file on the device to check it, transfer the file to USB and watch it on your TV. iOS would most likely need a PC with iTunes for file transfer and wouldn't be able to play the media format. That said, I am not up to date with the latest iOS so maybe it can do all that stuff too.

Got my eye on one of these maybe tf300T and from what I can tell on the asus site a couple of the specs are better than the prime but the prime has a better screen? Is this right?

http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_TF300T/#specifications

vs

http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_Prime_TF201/#specifications

Seems the prime's premium price comes from the super IPS panel and only a slightly better battery. Hardly worth the extra 200 bux, is there anything better about it I can't see here? Seems the 300T has a higher version of bluetooth and android 4 already where the prime lists it as ICS upgradable, whatever that means.

ICS was designed as a unified OS for all android devices. Phones and tablets.
i know what ics is, I meant whatever upgradable means. whether it comes with it on a cd and you install it yourself or you have to buy it separate or download it or what? is the android os free?

When my TF101 had the upgrade available the tablet told me and I then hit "install that b**** up in here" and let it install. It's free and all you need is a partially full battery. Took about ten minutes, rebooted once after downloading and then I was looking at ICS.

In my personal experience the ipad is better, which pains me as I'm no Apple fan boy, I use it 90% of the time, my sony tablet is now just a digital clock beside my bed (the stand is cool). The only thing annoying on ipad is flash only websites. I've tried hard to embrace the honeycomb but it s**** me and I go back to the ipad. Not sure if its just the Sony tablet itself, i always wanted the galaxy tab but was sold out when I was interested, or the OS, will try the new but but doesnt look promising.

I'm loving it. My only gripe is that the "screen" part is a lot heavier than the dock and on my lap/the seat it tends to want to tip over backwards, gotta be careful I don't leave it on the arm of the chair. Also the hinge that you mount the screen to comes down passed the base of the dock and it lifts the little rubber feet off the table so it tends to want to slip around easily.

I leave the power setting on balanced and it's plenty fast enough for browsing the net, posting useless crap on facebook and checking the TV guide. I haven't got any HD mkv's to try playing on it in case you're wondering about performance in that area. I can see if I can figure out how to encode something off my HD camcorder into mkv if you want me to see how well it handles a 1080 video. It plays ordinary sized videos just fine over wifi.

Any specific questions you want answers to?
