Question: GTX 560 or 670 or 680?

Hola,

Quick one peeps, I'm looking at buying a new gaming PC as my current one is dying all over the shop. Can't be that bothered to fix it, just want to play Diablo 3!

Is it worth getting a GTX 680? I realise it's the latest and most expensive, the lower model variants, 670 and the 560, have good reviews. Just wanted some gamer/experience opinion if anyone has any?

If you want to critique my build I'm just looking at getting one of these: http://www.novatech.co.uk/pc/gaming/

Probably the Destroyer or one of the iReign's.

Mucho gracias!

690 is the latest and most expensive but if you just wanna play Diablo then get the 560 or a 670 for a bit more powah. I have a 560ti and had no issues running the D3 beta, I assume the retail game runs equal or better.

670 would be good, uses less power than a 560, and much more powerful

Friend just built a new pc a few days ago for D3.

2500k / GTX 560Ti. He gets 130 fps in town ( i get 80 with a 6850, same cpu ) on max detail.

the performance difference between the 670 and 680 is negligible. I would get 670, best bang for buck.. I know some peeps on OCAU are annoyed how they bought 680 and when released, the 670 turned out to be just under the 680 by just a few percent (performance wise)..

I have an HD5850 and it runs D3 without any problems so I don't think it's a terribly hardware hungry game (just sucks up sleep and life).

670 and 680 have very similar performance;

5% difference between them on average

It's better than equiv cost ati card right now;

edit; though that's slightly skewed by WoW.

Thanks chaps!

Yeah I was concerned the performance difference between the 670 and 680 wouldn't be worthwhile for the cost difference.

I'll be wanting to play other graphics intensive games, e.g. Max Payne 3, Far Cry 3, etc.

Yes I was going to buy from that UK site, I'm in London. I'll probably do a bit more comparison shopping if I get time.

Do you really need a sound card? I've never bothered with one as most motherboard sound jacks seem to offer reasonable quality. Also why are you getting a LAN card or is it for the wireless? And do you need a blu-ray player?

Ask yourself this question:

What can a GTX690 do that a 680 (or apply to each model a step down) can not do, that you actually, realistically can not live without.

eg, can you absolutely, 100% not deal with not playing Diablo 3 at the absolute highest settings, on 2500x1600 (which your monitor doesn't support?).
And is the sacrifice of, say, turning shadows down one level worth, say, a $400 difference?

I can't remember the last time I even had the desire to crank graphics settings in a game.

You don't need a sound card, but it does make a difference, no matter what the haters say.

Really? Optical and SPDIF out are better with a soundcard? Cool.

Need more evidence to support buying a sound card, I haven't needed one since circa 1998 when people started putting audio chipsets on mother boards. Pretty sure I have my Sound Blaster LIve kicking around in a box somewhere.

it is like anything, a good mid range anything that is designed to do one role, is going to be better/more flexible that something that is trying to do all roles,

on board video is pretty good these days, but most people would still get a low end video card to do the work

with sound I guess it is something that doesn't ruin the experience as much as so a poor video, if you can understand the words been spoken it is passable, but there can be alot missing

then again I look at how many people just use the in built sound on their TV, does the job, can even be rather good, but a new high end TV would never be able to match a top spec hi fi system from 15-20 years ago, close, but would still be lacking a little...........something (bass, balance, enveloping sound)

also, sound is only as good as the speakers you are using, and as most people are unlikey to has speakers that cost more than $500 (inc amp) it wouldn't be worth it,

Copius speaks sense.

So does raven!

I've never had the best of the best, it does want I want it to and more! and does it well..

Core 2 duo @ 2.93ghz, GeForce GT240 (1GB ddr3), 4gb ddr3 + asus mobo.

125fps flat in qlive (picmip 0 1600x1200) [basically the only game i really play]
It plays Quake4, Doom3, BFBC2, Modern Warfare 2 all on good/decent settings with no horrible lag etc...

I'm beginning to wonder what my experience would be like running battefield 3? (would have to update to win7 first) Any ideas?

you would need a gtx 550+ to run BF3, that said if your board has the space (and the psu the power) you can bump the 240 to physx duty

Yeah I'm going to go the GTX 670, seems best bang for buck.

Good points on the sound card, I have a sweet sound system so worth having a low-mid range card I guess.

I'm not sure if I really need 16GB of ram, or if 8 would suffice. Also on the Mobo, that one seems high-end and I could probably get a lower-end one, it'd be the same? I'm not going to overclock or do anything special.

@Eorl Yeah getting it mostly for the wi-fi, had bad experiences with dongles. Most London flats it's difficult to get network cables in to your room, gotta rely on the wi-fi. Though I've been using those Ethernet power adaptors recently to good affect.

Probably don't really need a blu-ray drive, it's hard to let go!

viper, I'm running an i5 2500, with ssd, 12gb, and a gtx570, and it makes a noticeable difference from 8gb (and that is just on day to day use, photoshop, and games makes an even more tangible difference)

also running 2 monitors not sure if that changes the performance,

I have a mid range board, and have have for about 9 months, no issues

edit, would only change my system to a 670 if I built it today, even would sick with the sandy vadge
