Recommend me a small portable HDD

I'm having difficulty tracking down smaller disk spaced portable HDD for use with a new car stereo for MP3s, we don't need much more than a 250Gb, if that. But I'm having trouble finding any decent brands in anything smaller than 500Gb.

I would also like the same information for the same use, one with no power cords and only one usb cord needed.

Shouldn't you be buying for budget, not capacity? A 320gb drive is going to be no smaller than a 500gb one physically.
One more thing to mention; you've double checked that your 'new car stereo' can actually handle large file systems? I know my pioneer 600 dollar headunit made in 2009-2010 doesn't handle more than 32gb in fat32.

No i'm not talking about physical size, I'm talking about disk space, no point paying for a 500Gb drive if I'm only going to use 100Gb.
I'll have to check the manual when I actually get the car, it's a brand new 2011 model car so I should hope it can handle NTFS

Yeah that's actually what got me posting here clubby, my wife sent me that one but I told her I wouldn't trust a no name brand HDD to sit in the car all day every day and not shit itself after 6 weeks.

So you want to buy a rare/extinct HDD which is not only old, but massively more expensive than a modern 5x capacity version?
I'm not understanding something, are you worried about cutting down too many trees? Wastage of materials?

Yeah I have like 10 of these things (not that brand but the smaller drives) all WD passport ones and I have never really had any issues ... and I am not gentle with them at all. I think I might even have an old 320Gb one laying around somewhere still.

no, I want to know if anywhere stocks smaller HDDs in decent brands that I would obviously be cheaper than a 500Gb, as if I'd pay more for less space you tard.

Just buy the cheapest one available from gmart or whatever
As if it is worth your time to run around trying to save $10

CA have a 250GB LG 2.5" for $50. I wouldn't buy anything other than Seagate or WD for a portable drive but if you are just using it to store some MP3's for the car I guess if it breaks you won't lose much.

Do NOT buy that drive!
It's a scam, at least one of the deal/coupon sites caught on and removed it from their listings. The business "selling" that moves around a lot and the ONLY sites you find when googling that hdd brand is deal/coupon sites - the brand can't be found elsewhere because it doesn't exist.

why not just take the risk
worst case it fucks up and you get them to replace it
best case you've saved time + money + it just works fine
I think people over estimate the failure rate for drives

But that's wrong, the less space does NOT equal cheaper. The less space ones were designed using more expensive materials on a shittier process and are totally dead. Noone makes them.
At all.
What you're asking for is a figment of your own logic which is flawed.

Another thing to watch is what version/type of USB the car has, specifically if it can supply the extra power required to handle a 2.5" harddrive.
For example my Samsung TV has two USB slots, only one can drive my USB 2.5" drive but both will use a flash drive fine.

Luckily Ickus, most modern ones can because they're designed to also charge iphones/etc off them which require that 5v from the usb

I don't understand this thread. Walk into dick smith, the first product you see, probably on sale, will meet your needs exactly. 250GB usb powered drives are everywhere.

I wouldn't trust ANY hard drive in a car 24/7. It gets hot in there and there's tonnes of vibrations.

It's $50, how much cheaper do you want?

Do either of those need external power or are they just powered with one usb cord?

Agree, SSD only in a car. Can the Samsung Galaxy Player mount as a disk?

Most things with external SD cards and an internal SD card (like how the SGS and SGS2 are) don't work in many types of cars. This is mostly because they mount as kind of a usb hub with two separate drives so the device doesn't understand what to mount I suppose.

so the OP is wanting an assurance that some piece of low-end consumer electronics is going to be almost assuredly reliable in a high heat/stress/sun environment based on the purely anecdotal recommendations from people who don't really know what they're talking about and have never used it in a similar environment?
probably just a typical qgl thread really

That's kinda my point hardware, I don't want to put a bigarse 500Gb+ drive in that thing when it's only ever going to hold 100Gb or so of music, I'd rather find somewhere that has an older smaller disk space drive that is cheaper so I'm not out of pocket that much if it decides to keel over on me.
At this point however I'm tempted to use one of my old 320Gb externals in it and buy a bigger one for myself to replace it.

What the hell is "it" that you don't want to put a 500 gig drive in? the car, or a usb enclosure? The LG one from CA is only 250gig and it's only $50. Seriously, are you looking for a $10 drive or something? I really don't understand what you're trying to find.
Are you trying to find JUST a hard drive because you already have an enclosure? An enclosure + drive? What? How "cheap" do you want? Fuck size, if you can get a 500 terrabyte drive for $20 then you'd buy it, I don't care how much shit you want to put on it or how much you think you'll need, how much money are you willing to spend?
