I basically know, fuck all about TVs. However due to my computer nerdiness for whatever reason my family associate computers with televisions and I always get asked to set them up etc. Now, I’ve been asked to purchase them, sigh.
So the story goes, I have an opening that is 54 inches wide and unlimited height, which considering aspect ratio of 16:9 and old mate Pythagoras, leaves a diagonal of 61 inches I need to fill. This is the physical size and I don't know how TV companies quote their sizes if its screen size or overall size etc, so 61 inches overall.
I don't want to start your clique QGL war between LCD, Plasma, LED, Semen etc, I don't give a fuck what it is, it'll be used like once a month and will predominantly gather dust. Occasionally being cracked out for movies and sports.
Some criteria:
• Unlimited budget.
• Obviously highest quality 1080 or whatever.
• Might as well get 3D since its not mine, though will probably never get used.
• Does not need to have all that smart TV bull shit, though some pause / rewind playback functionality could be desirable?
• Awesome Warranty, if the thing shits itself I want hassle-free customer support and getting it fixed / replaced.
• Can be physically purchased from a store, eg JB etc.
I’m not sure what else I need to tell you cunts, so ask me questions if you need more info for good suggestions. I'm hoping there is a definite answer, sort of like "what CPU should I get?"
> 60" Plasma from Samsung or Panasonic will fit this nicely because it'll be quite cheap comparatively with LED at the same size , given that it'll sit gathering dust you may as well spend less.
Most newer Plasma will do 3D if that's your thing, then just choose the model that doesn't have all the smart TV crap. I wouldn't do smart TV thing because if that breaks it may fuck with your ability to watch TV. All of them comes with HDTV tuners in them now so that's generally is enough for most people.
I picked up a 60" 8 Series Samsung LED screen a couple weeks ago. Apart from the fact the TV is ridiculously thin and light enough for me to lift myself, I love to 5mm bezel, don't regret the purchase one bit.
I've got a 50" Samsung Plasma and it's brilliant, but I can't help wishing I'd held out for another 6 months and picked up an LED TV. They're so light and thin. Really impressed by their quality and performance.
Nah I get serious image retention, even after a year of use I'm still getting ghosts of black bars after movies or the desktop for 10-15 minutes before it fades away. I don't watch a lot of free to air though so I guess if that's all you do with it then they would seem like a good buy but then you could get the cheapest piece of shit TV around and get the same results.
Even it's strong suit of sports is a waste of time since the broadcasts are shit to begin with.

What brand is it?
We've had a panasonic for 3.5 years and it gets flogged with xbox (left on title screens for ages etc) and it is fine. I've never seen any image retention.

You obviously don't have Foxsports HD! Some of it looks amazing. Must admit that FTA sports offerings are pretty shit house. What the fuck are you doing, Channel 9?
I said God Damn! :) My Brother grabbed a 137cm Panasonic plasma Full 1080 HD tv a little over a vear and a half ago for around the $2k mark and he is very pleased with it. It has performed very well thus far and from what I have seen of it it is a very nice picture indeed. A couple of hours use a day and the juice bill is fair. Lot's of HDMI connections, SD Card slot, USB etc etc. The remote is fairly comprehensive. He grabbed it from The Good Guys at Mt Gravatt and they were quite happy to knock a little off the price. :)
Laser will surpass it though, 12-18 months Laser TVs are coming.
Really? They've been saying laser video displays are coming for 5 years now. Mitsubishi is the only company to make a consumer TV, and you have to import because they're not available locally.
Helped set up a Sony Bravia at friend's parents place last weekend. Nice screen, great features, but not good enough to justify the extra cost and the fact that Sony are such dicks.
Samsung LED/LCD seems to be the way to go; I've been happy with mine (although the panel died after about 10 months and had to get replaced, but the new one is fine).

Have you played around with the TV settings ?
too high Contrast ?
Try using the factory default settings.
My LG Plasma came with a lot of image options.
Ive never had an image problem even after watching 4:3 for a couple of hours, its usually gone in a few minutes at most.
I really like the TV i got, i spent a bit of time and payed a little more than i could have in another brand but the extra options i went for have all got some use.
Has anyone gone down the TV Rental method ?
New model every 2 years would be sweet.
Fantastic TV imo, so thin you wouldn't believe it's actually a plasma. Brilliant picture, although sound isn't the best but it's pretty standard with big thin TVs. The smarthub stuff is gimmicky with the whole apps thing (and largely useless cuz I have a media center pc) but it actually works quite well and I could see people without media centers getting good mileage out of it. Haven't watched anything in 3d on it and probably won't, so can't comment much there (beyond it has active glasses with batteries). No idea about support, hasn't missed a beat.
Ended up finding one at harvey norman in carindale for 4k with extra warranty, but you could probably get it cheaper now.
Not sure if it's the best TV to get, but I'm happy with my purchase.
I've got a 58" Panasonic 3D plasma and it kicks all kinds of ass. Although I bought it a while back so I'm guessing there will be bigger screens out now for around the same price I paid. Can't recommend it enough. Lovely picture with awesome colors. After watching movies on this I could never go smaller.
