I'm looking at getting the wife one for xmas. The best place I can see is Amazon for $99 (Kindle Wi-Fi 6" E Ink Display). Has anyone used one and are they really worth getting.

If she's into reading then yes definitely get one. I haven't had any problems with mine except certain books not being available in Australia. There was a simple way around this though I'm not sure if it still works.
Edit: How much is the 3G one these days? I've found it very handy, but it may not be something you need.

Cheers Monkeez. The 3g is $150 dude. Do they just take normal ebook ??? Or do you have to download a specific Kindle ebook ???

Most of them handle different file types. Just the other day I found on wikipedia a table that compares all the file formats that all the different e-readers support.

i've only used the windows kindle reader app for buying books and then reading them on the laptop, but the kindle version 1 of a friend's i've seen seems very good and if i read more than one or two books a year in their entirety i would probably buy one.
one would definitely make a good present to your wife without spending a lesser fortune on a samsung tablet or an ipad.
you can find the support page for the kindles here that also mentions the file formats it can read.

i got one of the original white ones, its awesome for reading, also i love the "free 3G" which lets me get books no matter where i am.
highly recommend getting one, if your wife travels alot i would recommend you go 3G, if she will always have access to a Wi-Fi network then no point i guess

Kindles run .mobi file types
My Girlfriend gave me the Kindle 6" (basic wifi one) for my Birthday and it's fantastic.
Buy a case of eBay Amazon are rip-offs for that.
The only thing I miss is the smell of a book

Big W and Dick Smith are also selling Kindles both the 3rd gen (Kindle keyboard) and the new 4th gen non keyboard non touch one for $139.

Reso that looks interesting, it looks like a library management content server... whats it like it is awesome. I only use the basic conversion and library features but I pretty much put ebooks in it and then plug in my phone and click 'send book to phone'.
If I was buying a Kindle I would also check out unswindle, although using it in Australia is almost certainly illegal!

Get into it, especially if she's a book worm like my other half. Best thing ever, since I bought it for her a year and a half ago she's carried it everywhere and the batteries lasts for at least 3 weeks even on fair bit of usage (with wifi & 3G off), can read in the full sun / by the pool / at the beach. It's fairly rugged as far as a gadget goes, I'd at least get a nice leather cover to go with it to give it a nice feel of a real book cover.
I wouldn't bother with 3G unless she's an impulsive book buyer, or wanted to surf the web with its built in browser (don't do it, it does work but not well) if she can wait to get to a WiFi hotspot you can buy the books then.
The "older" non touch model is a good buy if you don't care about having the latest and greatest.

Once you add shipping it's certainly cheaper to buy it from Big W or Dick Smith.

Once you add shipping it's certainly cheaper to buy it from Big W or Dick Smith. Except for that it's not. Found a few on ebay for less than USD$150 delivered, and that's the newer touch model with better battery life and that's also buy it now prices, could possibly pick one up even cheaper at auction.
Advantages are obviously not having to wait for postage and having a local warranty, but just pointing out that even at those sale prices we're still getting reamed.

Why the hell would you buy it from an eBay dealer when for a few bucks more you can have a physical store you can be certain of dealing with warranty issues with, or, worse, actually receiving your product full-stop?

... because it's the touchscreen model that's not available at all here yet.

Oh, so the product you want is the "Kindle Touch", not "Kindle" :P
Yeah okay, fair call then.

Hey, not sure about this question. My sister-inlaw wants to buy books via Amazon for her kindle. She says that Australia is only privy to new releases months after the us has got them. She asked me about getting a VPN so she can pose as an american and get the books as they are released? Is this even legal? Is there a way to do this? PM me if you don't mind.

That's unusual, I got 'Inheritance' the same date as US 4 days before the Aus version...

Seems that certain publishers will release to all countries at almost the same time, and some will wait months? Sister says "we conned amazon by putting in an American address to get the book on the American release date" for a while, but they caught on and blocked it somehow. Now she's been advised by friends who obviously don't know how to do it, to get a VPN.

That's unusual, I got 'Inheritance' the same date as US 4 days before the Aus version... yeh, I have heard from some friends that SOME stuff is available same day or very soon after, but then after a little bit it then mysteriously vanishes. I only know personally of this happening with one or two books, but it sorta makes sense that it is a cunning Amazon plan - let real fans get the books on launch by accidentally forgetting to put the proper region restrictions in place, but slide them in shortly after launch before the publishers can notice and complain. CONSPIRACY THEORY!

Yeah, she is saying this is totally a publishers ploy. I really don't see why they would hold out on some countries. No wonder the book industry is down in Australia.

long time kindle user signing in
3 tips.
1. get 3g version, always handy when travelling, costs you nothing in downloads as it's a free service
2. get calibre - convert all versions of anything to anything http://calibre-ebook.com/
3. dl kindle for pc (or iPad if you have one) - great for those books that aren't just novels. EG. wife is getting some "how to paint" style books with pictures etc, not so good on e-ink but comes up a treat on iPad and PC
enjoy endless reading. they are great

Go here, http://usaip.eu/en/free_vpn.php Auz, download the program, connect to a US server, enter demo as username, demo as password, and the hit connect. Ta da, you are now an American. Should be able to purchase stuff off US Amazon.

After playing with a mate's first gen kindle I ordered one of these: http://dicksmith.com.au/product/A3468/kindle-keyboard-wi-fi-6-quot-e-reader-refurbished
Not sure what the refurb/new! thing is about but it came new sealed in box and it's great.
I couldn't really justify the 3g price tag - you can fit about 3,500 books on it and in a pinch I can setup a wifi hotspot from my phone.
I don't really think I'd bother with a touch screen. Personally quickly navigating and touching isn't really what it's there for - I like the fact that you can just hold it like a book without worrying about touching the display. Navigation/changing pages is an easy and a deliberate action.
"Drag your fingers across to turn the page" is a wank anyway.

I'm going to butt in here with my own question, on a similar note to Kindles, but in regards to the better tablet. I'm having a hard decision to choose between the Asus EEE Transformer Pad, or the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tablet. All the reviews I've read have said they are both as good as each other, except the EEE offers a keyboard attachment. Anyone that has either or, and can comment on quality?
