Fair bad pc problem

Ok, so I got home today from work booted up the pc, synced my iphone and was in the middle of putting 4.0.3 update or w/e it was on it when a BSOD came up with something referring to a USB as part of the text (it disappeared after like 5 seconds before i could read it all). I rebooted and tried to run it again and it re-errored with another BSOD (it disappeared after like 5 seconds before i could read it all) and now it simply won't even boot.

Basically i shut down the pc, turn it on, fans start spinning etc, but the monitor keeps it's amber light and shows 0 text, can't get into dos / safe mode config it literally doesn't seem to be booting just turning on. Don't hear a beep from HDD or mobo whatever causes it.

Google didn't really produce any results i could try, any ideas?

pull out the power from the wall for ten minutes.
then restart.
i had a problem couple of years ago that was similar, something about the usb clears itself once the power leaves ???

Try resetting bios jumper. Def sounds like mobo issue.

Or you can just pull the power cord out and then press the power button. That will drain any remaining charge from your system.

but yeah, some USB devices play hell with mobo power. Make sure you unplug any extraneous usb devices before you test it again.

My media pc went in for this just the other week. The guys at CA cleaned all the dust out and did the rubber trick over the ram/video cards etc and it works a treat now!

Yer i gave it a fkn good clean (as good as 1 can without a air compressor). It actually seems to be the GEIL ram slots i had in there, i started ripping ram out and the moment i pulled them out and reset it got through. Gonna put them back in and test it again.

My old man's pc has some really weird USB problems last week. If I plug some usb keys in it would be fine, but others would BSOD and reset.

Still dont know what the problem is, money on the mobo, cause ram, psu, hdd all good and I even did a reformat.

Good luck man, let us know how you go.

Alright this is just why i fucking loathe computers, i literally did nothing except pull 2 ram slots out and put them back in and it's miraculously working normally again.

So nothing has changed hardware wise.

why would you take it to a computer store to get this done?

Cleaning out the PC & the contacts on the ram & gpu don't always bring a machine back to life.

Plus Tanaka bought his gear at the store, so if a part is faulty they can replace it for him on the spot if it's in stock.

I saw plenty of people who brought PC's in for repair who knew how to fix it and what to do, it just wasn't worth their time to do it.

Cept half the time repair jobs take over a day @ stores when by yourself can be an hr or 2 :p

ok well I would say that you could do it all yourself, if there's something faulty you can go for a drive and get the part
if there isn't anything wrong, you've saved time + the drive

as for not being worth the time .. it's going to take longer to drive there, drop it off, drive back, pick it up .. than it would to fully disassemble and reassemble it yourself and give it a good clean

anywho, i was just curious why if he knew what he was doing (and most gamers do? (at least when it comes to computers))

Depends on what resources the person has.
The most time spent at a PC store is the wait for it to move up the queue, much like taking your car for an insurance repair jobs.

Troubleshooting is easy when it's a clear cut hardware fault, when it's not, have fun.

Just even going by this forum when people post threads about their troubles the amount of comments I read and shake my head at is phenomenal.

Now I hate to imagine the 10+ million of wow players alone.

step is pretty much on the money as to why I did what I did. Heading to CA isn't that far out of my daily routine now (plus gets me out of the house). Plus there is always the chance that the fault could be something that I'm not able to test or replace with a part I don't have. While the Golden Days of CA have gone with the passing of Hermi, they still do a great job down there and it didn't cost me a cent (except I eventually dropped about $800 on them in other parts, drives, notebook and upgrades).

Wow.. Thanks man,

To be honest, I think step is your more informed choice with hardware rather than me these days.
He (increasingly) sorts my gear out when I can't be bothered nutting it out or when it just plain escapes me.
