The great thing about the lan back in the day was that everyone had shitty dialup connections and it was the only way to get some decent multiplayer games happening, not to mention the rows and rows of monitors playing porn at 2am... And the leeching which of course i did not participate in. However now that everyone has fast broadband, a lot of the lure of attending a lan has dimished.

I have a lot of fond memories of QGL lans however to me it is best left as a memory. Sort of like re-playing an old game that you loved only to realise that you shouldnt have as it doesnt have the same impact as it once had.

Went to only a few LANs with a bunch of mates during high school. Was always a day of CS which i never liked. About 10 of us @ some hall in Caboolture. Remember the first time i attended i didnt even have a LAN card and had to buy one @ the event.

Given the amount of power modern PC's use, I'd hate to see the power bill afterwards :)

I couldn't be bothered sitting on a hard chair for 2 days anymore, rather sit at home on a comfy chair and food readily available without having to drive down the road to maccas / subway.

I could write a long sordid history about where lan gaming went wrong, but I'll put a summary in the points below.

Can't have another LAN because:

1. Lots of hassle to organize
2. The event usually runs at a cost to it self.
3. Internet got more prominent.
4. Organization and power load balancing take a bit.
5. Finding a venue.
6. A lot of the games these days need a net connection
6a. Not many games have a LAN Mode or LAN Play...
6b. So you end up playing TF2, COD4, etc
7. Trendies decided 'gaming is cool'.
8. Used to be quite a few gaming LAN Cafes around Melbourne. Quite have since closed down or moved into the 'gaming bar' style area.
9. Setting up competitions is a hassle. Recently at Respawn LAN there were problems with the COD4 comp and people putting money in the kitty so-to-speak.
9a. People can't organize their own competitions.
10. Gaming cafes or PC Bangs are prominent in South Korea, Vietnam and Laos cause of the socioeconomic factor, but that has gotten better over the years.

http://respawn.com.au - Here is what is left of Shafted cause back in the day we did a good job. Usually booked out very fast.

The lack of QGL lans just goes to show you the terrorists have already won.

My favourite trick at LAN games was to sit there and watch the quake 2 time demo run, and about half way through go "yeah, it's about xxx frames per second" and when it was done everyone else watching it was like "the fuck? how did you do that?". I actually got pretty damn accurate at estimating how many FPS it would get within a few FPS. Yep, I had no life.

Well, the most I've ever seen mine get up to was around 700 watts. I have no idea what it was doing when the power meter spiked at that though.

It's gotta be somewhat offset by the power draw on the old CRTs I reckon.

Because of the demographics in PC gaming, I reckon if you had a lan today, you'd get more women, and fewer little boys

so take that as an incentive or deincentive, depends

and I'm not even counting the ones that used to be little boys and became women

!boom paedo joke, !wham tranny joke, how can you keep up

Yeah this is bloody annoying. To have a LAN game now, you need an internet connection and to be connected to origin / steam anyway.
