I stopped at the bit where he said their mouse controls are now being brought into the modern age because I was laughing too hard. I didn't play ArmA but it sounds like he's saying the mouse movement now matches that of games like Doom and Quake where you move the mouse quickly and your viewpoint moves quickly?
It was pretty much just hyperbole, but there was negative mouse acceleration hard coded into ARMA 2 that made your viewpoint lag a bit. It was one of the 100s of things that you put up with in ARMA 2 because there isn't anything really like the ARMA experience elsewhere, so you have to.
This is why I am pretty pumped for this game. They are making a whole slew of improvements while also getting rid of some of the big niggling aspects of ARMA 2. This means not only will we be able to play an awesome military sim, we will also be spared most of the faults of the original games.

That's fine, but the practice of doing what is basically old shit and alluding to it being some sort of revolutionary feature is really starting to get on my nerves.
Maybe the comment is tongue in cheek intended for existing community, but I hear stuff like that and I just want to cry. A lot.
I just know we're going to come full circle at some point and some new game will talk about their revolutionary multiplayer architecture that puts users in control of the gaming experience by allowing them to run their own server instances with their own settings.
FYI, the guy posting that video isn't one of the developers. He is just a prominent member of the ARMA community (founder of Shack Tac). The developers have never touted the improved mouselook as a killer new feature. All of the new features stated by them have been significant, like implementing the helicopter model from Take On, full underwater capabilities, modular weapon and kit customisation options, PhysX 3.0 implementation and so on.
Not sure he meant it was revolutionary, but while mouse issues persist in gaming it will remain note worthy. Oddly though he mentioned it while looking around over his sights, there is no lag in Arma 2 with sights if you turn it off in options, but it persists in free look and it's fucking annoying.
I actually used to play with dyslexci and the boys at shacktactical for a few months. Hes a good guy and puts a ton of time into his community, i have a heap of respect for his efforts.
I do quite like this so far. Just like the other Operation Flashpoint games you get shot by things you don't really see which is cool. The graphics they have done a superb job on, I'm running it on a 560ti and have set most things to Very High and it still works quite well. Wonder what I need to be able to run it maxed out.
Things that kill the framerate are PIP mode (set to low), object view distance (set it to half your view distance), APOC (set to off) and view distance itself (play with it till it's long enough and is also satisfying) <- tee hee
Apparently normal shadows runs better than low shadows, because on low it gives the task to the CPU while on higher modes the GPU takes care of it. Post processing is annoying and excessive on anything above normal (imo) so that can also be set low if you need extra frames.
edit: oh and shadow view distance can be tweaked with as well.
so i played this for 4 hours this morning and my current pc specs are a firs gen i7 8gb ram sata hdds and 2 x ati 4890's in xfire and it runs like silky smooth on standard which is so epic lol nad it still looks great. big ups to BIS for make a good game so far hope they dont bring out dayz for this and keep all cod and bf3 kids away cause its what the arma community has been waiting for
I tried to get into ARMA but I couldn't get past the shitty controls and fucked up mouse accel. Looks like they've gone overboard on the stance stuff. Maybe just having a key to hold whilst you scroll up or down to adjust stance would be better than 3 stances + modifiers.

It's actually pretty well done though, it's not like it feels overboard when you do it. The stance's feel natural once you're used to them and it doesn't take too long either.
I can't count how many times I would have killed someone in dayz / arma 2 had I just had a tiny higher view-point. Atleast now I can get that :D

I find Battlefield 3 to be exactly like this also, which is the only reason I don't enjoy the game and choose not to play it.
Modern Warfare 3 just feels "more right" and when I learned only 6 months ago that the MW series are based off the quake engine it made sense. It's a shame really, because BF3 is overall the better game [even though I also like the faster pace of the MW series]
I'm loving the alpha so far, runs smoother than A2 on higher settings and has already done all I needed it to in certain areas.

You could set it up to do exactly that via keybinds. But you then need to move the scroll menu to something else, I would not do that. I use space bar as my stance adjust button and W & S for stance up/down. Works just fine for me.
is this actually playable or real buggy? When i think Alpha, i think NS2 first build.
It's actually pretty polished atm.
Had a few crashes here and there and the content is nowhere near complete, but it's as polished as you'd expect of say an open beta from other shooters.
The only time I got consistent crashes was when a server I was on was turned off (or maybe crashed) unexpectedly. A couple other crashes but over all pretty good for alpha state.
From the looks of it I think they have focussed on stability and optimisation at the expense of content. There are only standard loadouts for BLUFOR and OPFOR, three vehicle variants and a quad-bike, two helicopter variants and three boat variants per side. I am not complaining because apart from maybe some planes it is enough equipment to give the editor a good little work out and get a taste for things to come.
So are they doing Arma 3 like previous Armas where servers will just listen to clients to spawn anything and thus, you only play with premade matches?
If you're referring to hacking then I don't expect it to be too much of an issue, traditional Arma does not really attract immature people. A3 will use the same open platform so hacking will be possible. But DayZ will be it's own thing that will not be open.
But as always premade teams/servers are best at limiting that sort of thing.
_finally_ completed the infantry showcase after much reloading and gnashing of teeth. Keeping to the low ground and minimising your exposure using the stance adjustment is the key element of success. Managed to bag two extra kills on top of the two you get given to you for neutralising the spotters.
Initially I was taking the high ground so I could get a good view of the enemy but was exposing myself to enemy fire and getting cut down by their machinegunners. Slow creeping over the crests of hills and using cover coupled with stance adjustment I was able to isolate enemies and pick them off group by group. Was great fun flanking the two spotters - a nice little pay-off after the clusterfuck of assaulting the village.
This is a cool little user update which puts a radar at the bottom centre of your screen which helps to show where your team-mates are. To install it first you have to grab Community Base Addons for ARMA 3 which is here. Unzip to your base ARMA 3 directory. Then grab the ST HUD which is here (it's the top one on the list) which also needs to be unzipped to your base ARMA 3 directory. Add '-mod=@CBA_A3 -mod=@sthud' to your launch options in Steam without the quotation marks to get it working. Note: you need to be in a group and you also need to have a compass in your inventory for it to work.
If you aren't a massive toolbox that I hate, add me on steam (fpotyay) and I'll give you a copy of ARMA 3 Alpha Lite. Let me know what your QGL nick is if you add me. Only one copy left.
I've got two invites left, guess I'll be nice and give them out to you wannabe army shooters. Message me on Steam (frodzone) with your QGL/AGN nickname so I can verify you are some one poster random.
yea well its pretty limited at the moment with its weapons and vehicles so I think the majority of fans have shifted back to arma2 for now at least until the beta when we will get some actual gear to play with
Yep what syzk said. There is very little content in the game so there is only so much you can do with it. The main island isn't even in the game yet.
Having said that it is still the 12th best seller on Steam last time I checked and if they play their cards right the beta should sell very well when it comes out.
So for those wanting to see how cool ARMA gameplay can be check out the video of this mission
Apart from the civilians and maybe some green factions I dunno every single player there is a human. Watch for at least the intro so you can get some context about what's going on then if you get bored skip to the last third. Keep in mind this is ARMA 2 so things will be looking and playing a whole lot better when ARMA 3 is fully released.
We used to run co-op missions in shacktac and we would regularly have more than 60 guys all formed up into squads. With the comms set up right it can give a fight a real epic feeld.
The hype for this kind of died off quickly. Only one of my friends is still playing it and he's actually in the army so go figure.
Give it a little while, I think beta is coming out soon™ and that will add more guns and possibly the larger main map, so shit should start getting a little hype-ier after more content is added.
Currently, it's just like 1 main assault rifle and a shared sniper and like 2-3 types of vehicles. Apparently, there will be more vehicles, weapons and generic shit like sandbags which should make wasteland far more exciting.
Yeah there is very little content really. They have added a proper sniper class to both BLUFOR and OPFOR which adds two anti-materiel rifles to the game plus a spotter class.
Altis will be the big thing that gives longevity to this game. Stratis is too small for any real serious ARMA gameplay and Altis is even bigger than Chernarus so plenty of mischief will be had there.
Beta will come 2-3 weeks after E3 and will have some APC's (wheeled, nothing tracked), a few more weapons, Comanche, Mi-48 attack chopper, Ghosthawk (stealth blackhawk), the green faction (with their own cams, weapons, vehicles) and what ever else they have not yet told us about. Altis (the 270km2 map) will not be in the beta.
BI did two pre E3 live streams recently (including a sneak peak at Altis), you can watch them here (click videos in top right).
Apart from the civilians and maybe some green factions I dunno every single player there is a human.
According to the video description "The mission shown is a coop (vs AI) on the Celle 2 terrain", doesn't that mean that all opposing forces aren't human, or am I just not understanding what's going on?
Arma is my favourite game. To find out fpot like's it too has just ruined it for me.
That doesn't sound like the logical though process of a Vulcan. Also, the apostrophe is incorrect.
Nope, I failed to read the whole description of the video. Oops.
It's still cool though. It would be a lot cooler if the enemy were also human. Kind of less satisfying killing an AI when you could be killing another human controlled player and putting them out of the game. Oh well!
If anyone has ever flown an ARMA helicopter before you'd see that this guy's piloting skills are fucking godlike.

It's just a matter of flying enough to learn what you can and can't do. Considering how long he's been playing (and how often), it's no real surprise he can fly the choppers like a boss.
Hell, I used to be an amazing chopper pilot on Desert Combat because I spent so many hours flying in El Alamein / Bocage with 48 bots on the enemy team and mowing them down.
Used to do flips, barrel rolls, low passes under bridges inverted (in a harrier).
I've been learning how to fly with collective recently (Take On-Helicopters has collective and rudder pedal support) with a proper lever (well, close enough to one) and it's a whole new level of awesome :D
Yeah but he lands in tiny little spots that I wouldn't even think about landing in. In fact most of my landings end up in a fireball even if it's in an open field. Unless I utilise auto-hover of course :P
Dyslecxi used to do a chunk of our flying for us and it was pretty awesome having him drop his little bird onto the top of a small roof top to evac us out of there or drop us off right in the middle of a fire fight at break neck speed. When it comes to that kind of stuff arma 2 was second to none and he could use the choppers like no one else.
Some of you guys should give serious thought to joining shack tactical, they run some great missions and dyslecxi is a hell of a community leader he puts in a ton of work and time into it. From memory when i was playing with them we had about 2 or 3 aussies playing one of which was based in brisbane and the pings never seemed to bother them. One of them his name escapesme but he was one of the best players we had.
edit: and in other news I have applied for ShackTac. An organised, moderated community is pretty much essential for proper ARMA play and these guys look like they do it the best. Says I won't get a reply for over a month though :(
Itll be quicker than that fpot, it took dslyecxi about a week to get back to me if i remember correctly. He just had a chat to me over skype and there was a pile of other stuff i had to do in getting arma2 set up to play with them. They arent the most hardcoremilsim community out there but they do have a lot of procedures.
If you like well organized gaming with a view to having an as close to reality experience as you can while it still being good fun these guys are second to none. I have a massive amount of respect for dyslexci and the work he puts in with running the and doing things like tutorials and other community stuff. At the same time though youll only get out of it what you put in.
Btw these guys like dieing glorious deaths so personal scores and body counts dont really mean much. The primary objective is achieving group goals. :-)
I have been watching a shitload of his videos to get a feel for what to expect and it all seems pretty good to me. There are some ARMA communities out there who are spergy as fuck (some yell at you if you get 1m out of formation for example) but these guys seem to have the perfect balance. He does like to yell at people who take too long to get in his helicopter, though :D

Have a look at CHKilroy's video's too. He also has some AMAZING gameplay from the alpha of DayZ called 'The Days Ahead' (or something like that) which is fun to watch, even today.
Lots of GREAT shacktac moments. If I was more keen on the game, I would have tried to join them, but since I'm not (atleast not hardcore team work style) I just scratch that mild itch with kilroy's antics.
Also, I think he is one of the reason's (Well, Beagle and Dyslecxi too) why shacktac has such a large window for joining.
