It has been long speculated by industry analysts and punters alike, but several credible publications are now corroborating word from reported insiders that both the Sony's next PlayStation console, and Microsoft's next Xbox are due to arrive this holiday season.

The Wall Street Journal purports to have it on good authority that Sony's February 20th "PlayStation Meeting" event in Manhattan will indeed be the big reveal of their new device, currently codenamed PlayStation Orbis, and Polygon outlines reported plans for Microsoft's big Xbox reveal "this Spring" (Autumn for us South-landers, and a window that aligns with the April rumours we've previously heard), with both new consoles expected to have a wider showing at the E3 2013 event in June.

Of course, this is all intel pertaining to a North American debut, and console launches in other regions, from both manufactures have typically trailed in the past. So while it's now looking pretty certain that Santa will have a lot of new PlayStation and Xbox consoles for American boys and girls for Christmas 2013, we probably won't know for a while if Australians will be waiting until the new year.

Finally, a separate report over on Edge claims to have some new details on the next PlayStation's controller, describing a unit "the same size as an existing DualShock", but with a touchpad in the centre that uses the same tech as the PS Vita's rear pad, and a new share button for distributing images and videos recorded on the system, alleging that "The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action".

yes, of course they do, but they don't produce a million of these things instantly, they build a few thousand a week or whatever, a few tens of thousand a month and then they stagger releases so that they don't only say "Sorry Australia, the first batch only has 10 000, wait till december for round 2" and you instead buy the competition. Or you wait the extra 6 months later for enough units to be silmultaneously moved from one continent to every other one in enough volume to sell all at the same time.

Think about the logistics of it.

nar, I think they might do as apple have been doing with the iphone

the build a s*** load, move them all into warehouses then do a release (if you really think that there is "only 10,000" is a flat out lie, they only release the next batch when X amount have been confirmed sold)

Is it officially called the XBox 720 yet? Surely no marketing department would let an opportunity like that slip past.

To my knowledge there's been no credible reports on the name or form factor design of Microsoft's console. Only things we have heard reasonable rumours of is that a number of designs are still undergoing focus testing.

The internal codename is Durango, however, MS codenames generally have no visibility on the retail product (Durango, like Natal is a city in South America). That said, Xbox 360's Xenon codename is the name that the repair staff and the modding scene use to refer to the launch revision of the xbox 360, in its original hardware configuration --which has been followed by other revisions like Falcon, and Jasper, and revisions of the slim that include Trinity and Corona. So Durango will prob be used in the same way for the next Xbox.

For what it's worth, my money is on them just calling it simply "Xbox" again, like Apple started doing with the iPad.

It could be, but I reckon they might be taking the angle that the Xbox and Xbox 360 were part of the Xbox 1 'family' so they will call this new revolutionary Xbox the Xbox 2.

Just a random stupid guess but you gotta be taking risks if you want those RBJs.
