Saw this when I went & saw Wreck It Ralph couple of weeks back, much prefer well made shorts like these rather than f*****g KFC commercials.

I've thought a few times about whether you could get 3D models to look like traditional drawings with a decent renderer and line rules, seems that they achieved that here with pretty amazing success.

edit: Yeah they did a sort of facing outlining and then manual artist trace combination:

edit edit: Actually, f*** me, they did it in reverse. They start with drawn lines and then the computer somehow moves them in 3d space relative to 3d objects.

I know that Mulan and bits of Aladdin used tweening, but in Mulan particularly it looked kind of crappy. I was more keen on an engine which could be used for games, converting 3d to traditional 2d-like lineart without any intermediate 2d artist stages necessary.

i.e. from 3d to something like this:

The Old Republic surprised me tbh, the screenshots don't do it justice for how good it looks in motion, achieving something sort of halfway there.

Wikipedia also has a list of cel-shaded video games

obviously results vary depending on the technology at the time and the look they were going for

Yeah I've worked with cell shading before, but I was moreso thinking about special rules for how to outline a nose depending on what the angle is etc, to mimic the drawing style of disney. It would need parameters per character, where on some characters the nose isn't visible from front on where on others it is (it depends on the type of character that they're drawing).

Basically a set of codified rules to do flat shading in between situational depth-buffer sudden-delta tracing.

That video was awesome, Nerf. I wondered how they got such a convincing cel-shaded look.
