Finally some more news on the long-talked about World of Warcraft live action film, with word that Duncan Jones (known for Moon, and Source Code, and being the prodgeny of David Bowie) has signed on to helm the silver-screen adaptation of Blizzard's ever-popular MMO (via The Hollywood Reporter - thanks Nerfy):

Jones’ producing partner, Stuart Fenegan, will executive produce on behalf of their production company, Liberty Films. Chris Metzen will co-produce for Blizzard.

Warcraft is a big jump up in terms of scope and scale for Jones, the filmmaker son of David Bowie known for his thoughtful sci-fi work.

Jones (CAA, Independent Talent Group, Bloom Hergott) made his feature debut writing and directing 2009's Moon, the well-regarded low-key indie sci-fi drama that starred Sam Rockwell and cost around $1 million to make. He followed that up with Source Code, Summit’s 2011 time travel thriller that starred Jake Gyllenhaal and cost around $35 million to make. Warcraft is expected to have a budget north of $100 million.

THR also mentions that Warner is shooting for a 2015 debut, with production commencing later this year. That Blizzard's Chris Metzen is involved as a producer is also a good sign.

Director Sam Raimi had previously been attached to the project with an initial announcement way back in 2009, but other commitments had since shaken him loose.

So this must be the big news Blizzard were going on about. I was hoping for cross realm AH's but this is just as good. Hope they don't fuck it up though.

This is pretty awesome news, we need a movie that does for video game movies what Batman Begins and Iron Man did for comic book movies; pull them out of the rut of being b-grade throwaway movies and make them something respectable.

So much awesome lore to work with and so many awesome characters, they could pull off something really impressive if they don't cheap out and/or fuck it up.
