JJ Abrams Directing Next Star Wars Film

So I just read that JJ Abrams has been signed on for the next Star Wars.

My nerd rage knows no bounds. Holding sway over both Star Trek and Star Wars franchises is too much power for one person.

Get ready for lots of montages and generic young people!

I get a feeling JJ is a lucky guy that might not actually know what he's doing, kind of like Lucas.

I thought that the star wars prequels were flawed, but still a thousand times more interesting than the generic action flick which was the recent Star Trek...

Still, glad to be getting another live action episode, regardless.

I thought the new Star Trek was a marked improvement on any of the next generation films.

Did you press play on that youtube clip Nerf Lord? Flawed is a pretty generous, catastrophic might be closer to the mark.

Abrams is *MUCH* better at interpersonal scripting than Lucas.

The star wars prequels were bits of good mixed with bits of horrible, but then, the old movies had their crappy moments too. Ja Ja and Anikan might have kind of sucked, but things like Qi Gon, Palpatine, the clones, pod races, etc, were still kind of uniquely cool.

I thought that the star trek movie was just sort of bland, none of it felt really important or meaningful. I'm not a fan of stories where the protagonist succeeds pretty much because they have an endless supply of lazy c***iness. With the skydiving and stuff, it seemed more like a chance to throw together some quick spectacle, rather than trying to tell an epic story.

oh ok Ja JA and Anikan sucked but the stuff designed to sell toys to kids was cool?

Kirk is a c***y risk taker, that his whole thing and always has been, Abrams just made it more of a focus point.

I would rather watch a generic action film than a s*** action film, which is what the next generation films were.

I thought he did a good job, he had to reintroduce and take ownership of Seven main characters plus some fairly substantial supporting characters. Doing that and making action feel organic, in 120 minutes takes some skillful writing imo. It could have very easily been terrible.

Ok Ticman, I am prepared to admit this may not be as bad as I first thought.

Still, I would rather someone like Duncan Jones, or maybe Peter Jackson :D

I'm with Nerf on this one, the Star Trek movie was bland as hell. It was just all so much fan service and did very little to build up the franchise. It wasn't a bad film by any stretch, but it was just a generic sci-fi action movie in a franchise that is traditionally more cerebral.

If kids wanted toys of "Qi Gon, Palpatine, the clones, pod races", it's probably because those were awesome things. ;)

Yeah right so being a generic hollywood action flick is bad, but direct merchandise marketing is some how a redeemer of a terrible script.

The whole point of the first trilogy was for anikin to fall in love with padme and have his fall from grace, which was done appallingly badly.

The "flaw" you're talking about is the execution of the primary story ark. He had three movies to establish and destroy a relationship between two characters and he couldn't f*****g do it. That is not a minor flaw. Waving a few light sabers around doesn't make up for it.

Anyway this is a silly argument to have so I'm going to stop.

Not sure if you know what a director does. You might be confused since Lucas had more than just a director role but it isn't so much the story or characters that the director is responsible for but how scenes play out.

Star Trek was a well directed movie, it might not have been a masterpiece it may have been bland but it was directed competently. Star Wars is a complete mess, the scenes are shot horribly, I still remember the scene where he filmed their shadows kissing.

That would be way more preferable than Lucas's 36 months apart for Eps 1-3. At least my disappointment can be confined into a space of less than half a decade.

Star Trek reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike.

Coloured lightsabers don't save a movie.

They have a whole jedi army with different coloured sabers in AotC and it was still bland. The fight between Luke and Vader in RotJ was so much better because the audience understood what the personal stakes were rather than hundreds of Jedi dudes that nobody cared about.
"Execute Order 66" ? So what? Pretty much zero emotional impact since all the Jedi characters that the audience actually cared about survived.

This is an important point. The only destined to die Jedi that we cared about was Windu and he got rogered by the Emperor. The betrayal of the Order - the pivotal point of the whole f*****g series - was implemented in a cast-off fashion because Lucas was so focused on his stupid love story.

The Jedi desperately needed some Dietrich, Frost and Apone-style characters seeded through the Clone Wars, Jedi who are doomed that we actually care about. Too much time on s***** Anakin and Padme dialogue/story, and the fall of the Jedi was about as impactful as the death of a bunch of redshirts.

Yes, but admit it: When you re-watch it, you watch it just for this scene.

I disagree about Home Alone, that is a very deep film from start to finish, same with the 2nd one.

But yes I love watching the execution scene in AOTC and pretending I don't know it's Star Wars, and then Sam Jackson comes along and THIS PARTYS OVER MOTHERF***** and the lightsaber and then all the jedi that somehow are already in the grandstands but nobody noticed even though everyone else looks like a god damn termite. Then what's this... Yoda is leading the storm troopers!!

they need to stop killing the franchise. Leave it as an awesome trilogy that will remain in the minds of generations, our youth, and more youths to come. I won't be showing my kids (if i have any) the newer trilogy.

Make a new universe with characters as interesting and emotional as the original trilogy. Movies just aren't as good as they used to be.
