Major oil discovery in outback SA

Brisbane company Linc Energy says independent studies have confirmed a major shale oil source in South Australia's far north, which officials have estimated could be worth $20 trillion.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/image/4482164-3x2-940x627.jpg

I'm thinking we should keep the oil, if it is there, for us. Get the field up and running then stop importing.

Of course we'll probably get invaded by the US so they can get the oil.....

Crude oil > shale oil. Still a pretty sweet find though. I hope I did that greater than symbol correctly.

Crude oil > shale oil.

You probably mean conventional not crude. You did get the symbol right, though.

Shale oil is crude oil but in an unconventional geological formation rather than a traditional reservoir meaning a higher cost of extraction and processing.

Yep that's what I meant. I remember reading a thread about some big deposit found in America and it said something about shale oil being inferior. This is why I should google before posting.

Hey Spook you know LINC Energy's primary goal is to commercialise converting Coal seam gas to liquids i.e. deisel fuels and aviaion fuel which is a green alternative with very little environmental impact compared to CSG but Anna Bligh (your buddy) and her Husband blocked commercialisation in Queensland until after the election and now the LNP have had to start over again and Campbell is busy swinging his axe to care about alternative fuels.

You know whats funny is that in your terrible attempt at humour you are correct.
Linc Energy has their CTL (coal to loquid) plant out at Chinchilla which of course is the supplier of 70% of Australia's watermelons. The Threat of CSG in the area has of course cause a lot of problems in the Chinchilla/Tara area.

So yes someone think of the watermelons!!

i dunno about the fracking. how will we ever know whether it is affecting the water table. needs more research.

the viability of shale oil is determined by the barrel price. low prices mean shale projects cant start.

How much oil do we even import? What's the benefit of local oil other than transport costs?

This won't affect prices locally because we are locked into a global market price, we pay the same per barrel for oil pumped out of Bass Strait as we would for oil from Saudi Arabia.

For a 'science communicator' this dude sure says some dumb s***.

Fossil fuels are what we have at this stage in human evolution and any alien species that evolved (ie. wasn't handed technology by god or whatever they call him) would have undergone a similar progression to reach whatever they hypothetically would have to use to power such long range travel.

So be embarrassed by s*** like our utter failing as enlightened beings, ignoring suffering in the world in favor of a buck. We should be investing more in alternative energy sources but we also have to live in reality.

I think that he was suggesting that we could do far better without stabbing ourselves in the foot, but simply aren't making a significant effort to, due to a lack of capability for coordinating long-term preemptive action within our species even when the danger is clear.

Its interesting. China is making huge ground in moving away from fossil fuels. I think China is spending something like 500 billion on wind, hydro, nuclear and solar power infrastructure. Kind of embarssing to everyone who likes to use them as a scape goat for not moving away from fossil fuels.

From the BW article your "news" source is quoting but missed out on:

So what’s China gotten for its money so far? Clean power, and plenty of it. The country now has the capacity to generate 6.2 gigawatts of solar power and 68.3 gigawatts of wind, enough to replace the equivalent of about 50 coal-fired power plants.

Capacity is a vague word.
If the sun shone 24 hrs a day from noon that would be capacity for Solar.
It doesnt.
If the wind blew not too hard and not too soft 24 hrs a day that would be capacity.

Capacity is swarmy dodgy method of overhyping green energy.

I think from the point of view of an astrophysicist - who ever day is looking at things like stars which burn more energy in a nanosecond than our entire planet would in a jillion years or whatever - the power offerings of fossil fuels are just so tiny that talking to some alien species about it would be embarrassing if they'd figured out the secret of cold fusion or some other thing that we know is theoretically possible, but we just haven't figured out how to do.... because we're too busy burning fossil fuels to invade third world nations to get more of those delicious fossil fuels.
