Open PC cases - Aerocool StrikeX Air

Thought this was pretty interesting - PC case that is designed for open air use. Would be good for people changing their hardware every other day.

I don't think dust is a huge issue after opening some of my cases after years of use to see the computer running fine just about knee-deep in dust. Probably give it a blow of with some compressed air every now and then just to be safe.

Here's a modded one:

They would take up a lot of space and would be pretty awkward on a desk compared to a tower though. I guess you would want that kind of access to them if you are changing parts constantly.

The Antec equiv is a bit different:

The Lian Mini-ITX spider case is different again:

Here it is with some hardware mounted:

What do you reckon?

Wouldn't there be an electrical risk being exposed like that?

Electrical s*** is enclosed for a reason.

only if you touch it,

I look at it this way, while you need to be clean, the bonus is that it wont fill with dust, as you'll see the sust build up, unlike a normal case where the dust build up is hidden

So my rental had a leak the other day. . .

Then my cousin came over and while he was drunk gestured too much with his cup of booze.

Finally my cat sat on it because it was warm.

Someone had a lego one at a QGL LAN years ago.
I thought it was cool.

Anyone got pics of that?

I'd have to clean my PC out twice a day with an open air case. You should see all the dust & cat hair stuck to the filters on my current case.

The footprint of that Lian open air case is pretty ridiculous. A lot of unused space there on your desk. Seems like the best approach is still to put a PC in a box and call it a day.

I buy pantyhose and chop the crotch out and use it as a filter, throw away and replace when it gets shifty, which doesn't take long even though the house is dusted and vacuumed lots.

I'm not a fan of these open cases. I agree with Spook in that I think dust would drive you insane.

I'm going to look toward a PC that doesnt show a seperate case.
Like this :p

I have to say my iMac is pretty neat. It takes up very little space, no chords and you can't tell if it's on or not when the screen goes black because it's incredibly quiet. Having said that though the only thing I use it for is photo editing and making parody songs about my housemate.

what happens when you realize you're behind the bell curve by not getting a 24" monitor and no upgrade path?

I love the imac, if your hardware has any fault, you have no monitor, no motherboard, no videocard, no chance of swapping parts.

No wait. I'm not technically retarded. I don't like all in one boxes of any brand.

Screw spending 1500 dollars on a high end monitor you have to replace every 4 years let alone the grand of components inside it which make it show anything.

Edit: Lol captain lateral, posting roughly my thought at the same minute :P

Cause it comes with a 27" high res monitor that will be just fine thanks :) If I get 3 years out of it, than thats just fine.

Wow. You only expect 3 years out of a monitor?

I've got 8 out of mine, and i'm not looking to replace it.

Dell 30" 2560x1920. From the savings of not buying a new high res, good colour monitor every 3 years with a new system, i could almost afford a 4 year old car, if i had children, i might even do that, just so i can say "Not buying me a mac, bought you your first car".

I presume that this wouldn't be any good for heavy CPU/GPU use... My current tower is a beast with fans front and back, a separate PSU and HDD shaft, and a custom huge fan on the cpu, and yet in the SEQ summer heat it struggles to keep the air coming out not-insanely-hot...

Came with dust filters though, those are great.

what is the highest heat producer in the case?, since water cooling the cpu the airtemps inside the case and the extracted air temps have dropped a fair bit, now unless the video card is pumping, it is nice cool air out
