Does Blizzard's generosity know no bounds? Over the weekend, we learned that the World of Warcraft Cinder Kitten pet initiative raised over $2.3 Million dollars for the American Red Cross' Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, and now players of StarCraft II are being granted a single character profile name change on their in-game accounts.

A blog post explains how the developer is sorry for the delay in implementing a way to charge players money for the privilege, with Paid Character name Change feature now promised "shortly after the release of Heart of the Swarm", so to make it up to you, you can have one free name change.
We owe you an apology. Some time ago, we communicated a plan to make a paid name change service available to players. We want you to be able to change your name in-game more freely, and do so as often as you like.

The small percentage of players who used the free name changes that we previously offered, the introduction of Battle Tags, careful consideration of how character names will work with Battle Tags in the future, and our increasing focus on completing StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm all contributed to us deprioritizing the Paid Character Name Change feature. The fact that we didn’t keep you updated when we deprioritized the feature was a mistake, and we aim to do a much better job of keeping you informed in the future.
If that wasn't enough to melt your zergling heart, they've also promised one more free name change when the Clans features goes live "in the next couple of months", so if you have a clan tag hard-subbed into your profile name, you can wait until then. What a swell bunch of guys!

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is due on March 12 2013 for PC, and Mac.
