Many fans of the DayZ mod have been eagerly waiting news on where exactly the standalone title currently stands, with a previous release at the end of last year now come and gone. Dean "Rocket" Hall, the creator of the hit mod has revealed via a new blog on the DayZ Standalone Tumblr that while the initial date has passed us, the game is still doing well, with mentioning of an imminent closed testing phase to begin shortly.
I suppose I should start with the question everyone wants to know… where is DayZ Standalone? Obviously, it’s not here. At Eurogamer I said that DayZ had to be out before the end of the year and that’s come and gone. I still stand by that comment, to achieve what we had originally wanted, we did have to be out by the end of the year - and we’ve failed to achieve that.

Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn’t here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold - to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be. This blew any initial plans we had dictated to pieces.
According to the updated Tumblr page, the closed testing phase will consist of 500-1000 selected players to "assist in ensuring our architecture is correctly functioning." Once the closed testing has finished, the team will reschedule an internal date for the public release of DayZ Standalone.

The new blog update also reveals additional changes to the currently free mod, with an entire new inventory system that allows for scavenging of individual items and not just loot piles, through to UI changes that have been "greatly inspired by Minecraft to make the UI simple and effective, rather than flashy and complex." Dean also mentions that while the two Bohemia Interactive developers Ivan Buchta and Martin Pezlar continue to be imprisoned in Greece on charges of espionage, work on the re-development of Chernarus continues slowly, however it is still a great impact to the title.
