In a press release announcing that their latest device "unlevels the playing field", gaming hardware manufacturer Razer has revealed the Razer Sabertooth, a new custom Xbox 360 controller with remappable buttons that "increases actuation speed, reduces fatigue, and encourages natural hand posturing for a more precise and comfortable gaming experience, giving console players the competitive edge they crave."
Six additional remappable buttons - two at each shoulder of the controller and two removable rocking switches at the bottom - allow gamers to re-bind any choice of buttons on the controller for easy access. A built-in OLED screen is also included, which allows customization of the controller’s many features. Gamers may remap the multi-function buttons, adjust the analog stick’s sensitivity and save profiles: the display visualizes their modified preferences.

...The Razer Onza Tournament Edition gave Xbox 360 gamers a competitive edge,” said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director. “We’re now taking things a step further with the Razer Sabertooth, with its re-mappable multi-function buttons and OLED display, restructured with more control options than any other device, in a rugged design that doesn’t compromise comfort.”
More details nca be found over on the Razer website, where you can order the new device for US$79.99, with a $10 discount on offer for Razer Onza owners.

still waiting for a controller to be invented that matches the speed, control and precision of a kb/mouse setup, in a compact package.

I like where Madcatz is going... hot swappable thumpsticks and the hot swappable dpad. Much like what we have for mechanical keyboards and 'keycaps' or gaming mice and mouse skates.

Jump to 2:20 to see the design inter-changable goodness!

As for keyboard and mouse on a console. Its already here. Xim3

To be...
On Topic:
I have a lot of respect for *some* Razer products, but not all Razer products. I have a fair amount of respect for Steelseries / Mad Catz as a manufacturer. As long as they stick to their guns and keep designing innovation. The Deathadder 3.5G is a good mouse and in some ways, Razer seems to be trying to inch the design process back up to where they were back in the mid to late 2000s. Its just getting that price point right (If they are giving Onza owners a discount -- thats' good) and the selling design points right (consulting the right crowd, which creates the right products). They make half decent cloth and hard mats. The keyboards have been a bit hit and miss over the years. As for the headphones. That is kind of debatable from an audiophile standpoint.

Also more than likely Major League Gaming wouldn't probably allow that sort of controller on the field because its macroable.

Getting off-topic:

Now we just need a 'console platform' that has a long standing hot swappable hardware and we're ready to rock and turn it into a streaming content platform from cloud gaming / client gaming / whatever the next big thing is. Remember the "Steam Big Picture" thing. Now I reckon I know why M$ and SONY are worried. Well, Sort of.

So you'd probably be looking at (I'm going out on an idea limb binge here):
- Something that is like Apple in terms of service (and the whole app store thing).
- Like Steam in terms of cost and UI front end.
- Ease of use like the M$ Operating system
- Desktop lounge room media centre that probably has enough room to upgrade parts for the next 5 years, but at the same time has enough room to put-in and get parts serviced. (Something with a Lifetime Warranty like Origin PC)
- Possibly something like the OUYA
But with a bit more grunt.

XBOX and PS3 consoles you can really only upgrade the hard drive. Don't get me started on mod chipping -- piracy is a service problem it has been sent to hell and back and been declared more times than I care to mention; The PS3 networking cluster fuck getting hacked or XBOX Live's hacking problems.

I think its time for err something new -- maybe a multimedia PC or a PC Console that doesn't cost 5,600 to 24,000 AUD.
