so, went to my local s'pine red cross for my quarterly bleed and feed (cheese and crackers) and lo, they had some nice food there

the last few times there have been chunky nice looking muffins and etc, but todays offering was grand

coke, poppers, two different juices in jugs, cold and sparkling water, and a new coffee machine,
and the spread was party pies, quiche, sausage rolls, muffins, cake, fruit, brand name choc (cherry ripes, mars, M&M's etc) three different cheeses, (inc cracker barrel) and a take home xmas pud

man, I'm going to give blood a week before xmas every year if it is going to be like this

yeah, it is best we have a system like the US used to have, and just use the blood from the homeless, and those in prison, because nothing bad would ever happen from that.............................

think about that when you have to goto Asia for surgery when you're old..

I'm going to throw the dice and get that new organ transplant in China when the time comes, though I don't think for one second that there won't be side effects. Hmmm.. thinking about it now I might just not...

It's only a matter of time until Aus mirrors the US Health System.

I've always wanted to give blood but never have, no idea who runs it over here in Germany. I don't even know what blood type I am.

Sort of relevant but I always wondered how much money charities would save if they didn't send out free gifts, glossy magazines and fancy letters all the time, asking you to donate money to them and their cause.

Whatever happened to an el blando, recycled paper letters? Why do they have to be 20 page full gloss magazines detailing the life of some kid in africa, putting on the sob story?

Here's an idea, how about taking the money you paid to get that magazine printed, and sending that to the kid you claim to care so much about.

They have an advertising budget, just like any other business. You have to spend money to make money.

But do they have to spend so much money printing out magazines & giving away free solar powered torches & s***? No, they do not. It's all just a big load of crap.

I can't give anything to a charity that pays it's CEO $300k+.

I read somewhere that the new guy gets around $500k.

Of course they'll spend it if it makes more for them in return. It's like making it more comfortable for donors so they tell their mates about and and are now also more likely to be a return donor. Like any business that runs it's advertising well, everything is measured to make you more money.

I've heard in government departments they spend ridiculous money on food and stationary. Not because they get a lot of it, but because it all comes from bulls*** suppliers that have a huge markup on everything. They've stopped getting Low Fat Milk because it's so much dearer than Full Cream. But at the supermarket it's a dollar per litre for either. Why would you bother walking your fat government arse down to the shop when the state pays for it all from it's bottomless pit of money.

Yeh I don't get the objection either. Big organisation, big responsibility. The sort of person qualified for the role is being charitable taking a gig for 300k.

They refuse my blood now, but I used to give pretty regularly, o neg is the good s*** and I wish they could still take it.

I worked in local Government and the receptionists of each department used to do a Woolies run for milk, and stationery was pretty basic from a regular corporate supplier's catalog.

I think what whoop is trying to say they need to better manage their advertising and choose the most effective method.

I think those glossy magz and the letters they send if you donate once, are a waste and an announce. Bureaucracy has been shown to be a a self perpetuating and seems to be a big problem in certain money grubbing organisations.

I need to give blood, never done it. I don't even know my blood type!

greazy man, it doesn't take long (in my case the paperwork takes longer more often than not)

most people will only be in the chair for under 10mins, and they really look after you. apart from the phone call as a reminder (and the attempt to get me to make an appt, which has never happened in the 10 years of my giving) i dont really get much ads, a thank you letter is all

(pretty sure most of the marketing money in spend trying to keep the donors they already have, and most of the radio ads are most likely freebies)

Ah yeah good point, I misread it as meaning they don't take the blood type at all anymore, rather than just his... probably was the gay sex though.

Sounds like smart advertising to me. You've made the step and donated once, you've proved you can hack it, are motivated to the cause and are a medically suitable donor.

I can't imagine any better targeted advertising than trying to convert one-timers into regular donors?
