So i've toyed with the idea of getting a 3D printer for a while, but I don't think I would use it enough to make it worthwhile.

I am however wanting to print off a couple small objects (i.e. small enough for a home-3D-printer to do) and don't know where would be a good place to get this sort of one-off thing done

Has anyone got any suggestions for where to go and type of price expected to pay for this service? - I found a few places on google but they all need you to send the models in and get a quote back

This would be ideal for you.
Staples Announces In-Store 3-D Printing Service
Staples Easy 3D will launch in the Netherlands and Belgium in the first quarter of 2013, and will be rolled out to other countries shortly afterword. No word yet on pricing or when it will reach the United States.
The article mentions a couple of 3d printing companies but their pricing is probably n/a for you. Good luck!

I just toured QUT and counted 6 differnt 3D printers. Perhaps get in contact with a University Engineering school and see if they'll do it for you at cost.

Hi Jerry,
I am encouraging your idea about getting 3D printers. We are manufacturing printers in both large and small size. I would like to recommend you to buy Creator http://www.3dstuffmaker.com/creator-evolution/ since you are looking for small size home 3D printer.

Best Regards
David Paul

I plan on setting up a 3d printer company in Brisbane mid next year. It will be a SLA 3d printer, should be way more cost effective then other current companies on the market so hopefully I'll be ultra competitive. But for the meantime, I'd say hit up a uni or hopefully a friendly QGLer will help you out at cost.

What you mean like insert a cow and the printer shaves it down to a steak? Pretty sure that's just called a butcher

Cool Sip. One of the guys at the Uni said it cost him $1.50/sqr cm for the materials including water soluble support structure. Not sure if that factored in maintenance and purchasing cost tho, probably not.
