So I'm alternating between luke warm and cold on this thing. I'm a real pushover when it comes to gaming, I own all the current gen consoles and generally have more money than sense. HOWEVER I can't see myself buying a WiiU at this point, there arent any games for it that interest me. I may crack on launch day and rush out to buy one, but right now I'm staying strong.
This whole games are addictive thing has got me thinking I should go out and get one just to get that awesome dopamine rush that I crave. I haven't bought a new console in years, and I'm kinda ready for a fix. At this point in time that is the only rational reason I have for buying one.
I'm yet to meet anyone who is looking forward to buying one. That can't be good. Anyone super excited for this thing? Have you preordered? Anyone else out there like me, torn between buying stupid shit or saving your money?
Got one pre-ordered at Dick Smith, though sadly they won't price match Kmart's pricing of $379 for the premium pack because its actually lower then their cost value or something. Doesn't really bother me though as Kmart aren't taking pre-orders, just that they'll have "some" stock on Friday for whoever gets in first.
Generally I'm quite excited for this console, more than I have been for past generations (read: only just bought a PS3 late last year and selling it already), so will be quite an interesting bit of tech. I'm more interested in the tablet then anything, I have some great ideas I want to try and execute on the Wii U if I can get my hands on some development tools. Also really looking forward to ZombiU, sounds like a cross between Resident Evil and Dark Souls so should be fun.
Not to bothered by the apparent lacking CPU or specs, Nintendo have always been about gameplay to me then shiny new looks.

This is pretty much exactly me at this point too, couldn't have put it better.
Yeh I really like the idea of the console but I can't see anything in the launch lineup that makes good use of the new technology? I have a perfect excuse to buy one (young kids who love the Wii) but what's the point?
Haven't pre-ordered but I'll probably get one just because I have a bit of a soft spot for Nintendo. Admittedly I've not really been excited about a Nintendo console since the Gamecube though, Nintendo's gimmicks were better in the old days when they were optional accessories (like the power glove or super scope) and not forced upon the gamer as the centerpiece of the console. That said, I have more interest in using the tablet as a controller than I ever did for the wiimotes. The idea is not too disimilar to using the GBA as a second screen on the Gamecube for certain games as were the wiimotes being kind of an updated power glove.
im in 2 boats about it but might wait when there special on and you get super mario bro U for free with it or something... only reason i would get it too is to keep my virtual games that i ahve on my wii and get a bit of money back from my wii
I'm sitting in the luke warm camp as well. Gaming has taken a bit of a back seat over the past few weeks/months and if I had time to play something it'd something I already own (SC2, GW2, etc). The line up just isn't convincing me to jump in with the Wii-U either.
I haven't seen a reason to get a Wii U. Maybe once the next Zelda title is closer I'll consider it, but there's simply no launch titles (or upcoming titles) that look remotely interesting to me.
The same was true of the 3DS when I got it, but I ended up buying maybe 12 games in the first 12 months. But right now, I have AC3 on PS3... can't see anything else due for release.
Modding community are failing at the 3DS (with the exception to being able to run DS games.. which lets face it isn't actually hacknig the 3ds but tricking it into thinking its running a DS through its weak emulation).
Probably would of been more interested if the Mario launch title was more like the free room style (Mario 64, sunshine, galaxy etc) instead of the sidescroller.
None of the other launch titles really grab me either. I'll probably hold off and see what games come out for it next year.
I can think of better things to do with money than buying a Wii U.
Every time a new big N console comes out I question whether they can move away from first and second party titles being the only big titles. Third party developers really haven't fully thrown their weight behind a Nintendo console since the SNES.
One 349 dollar hooker, or 349 one dollar hookers? One $200 hooker and 2 g's of blow!
Nintendo's demograph are children...Not interested. They have crap games that no one knows and sorry grew out of mario and donkey long years ago...they just never grew up with their demograph unlike most other game providers

This. I have my big boy pants and only play cereal games for grown ups.
I would think in the year of 2012 people would have at least one piece of hardware that can play DVD's
Not if you only have a Wii U in the house. Boom!
But seriously. How much more would it cost Nintendo to pay the license fee to have it play DVD's? I hear the old Wii could play them with some type of firmware so obviously the thing can read the discs. Just seems so cheap.
Did you just remember that DVDs are old and shit?
You'd be surprised how many people don't care about bluray or hi-def stuff and are happy with DVD's.

The Wii demonstrated that not enough people care about DVD playback for it to matter. Now let's say it costs $1 per console to license DVD playback, and Nintendo sell 50-100 million WiiU consoles. You're basically asking "Why doesn't Nintendo want to lose $50-100 million?"
Then just add $1 on to the sale of the console and they wont lose anything. Funny how Sony and Microsoft can afford to but somehow it's just too much money for Nintendo.

I don't find that surprising, I just don't care about what those people want. You know what I would find surprising though? Someone who owned a bunch of DVDs and didn't already have something to play them on.

It's not that it's too much money, it's just wasted money. If McDonald's could make their burgers slightly better by raising the cost of ingredients by five cents, do you think they would do it if it had no significant impact on the amount of burgers sold?

Just so you know, MS do not ship DVD playback with basic Windows.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 360's successor did not include DVD playback out of the box, and was instead a purchaseable add-on from the Store. This makes sense, so that rather than slug everyone with the licensing costs, people who want DVD playback can pay for it.
I think that the better think to do is wait until next november at least. All the problems will be resolve, it will be at a good price and there will be more games
I'm shocked at how much I am actually playing the U. I was dubious but I'm sold now, the tablet controller is a godsend in my house. Last night I was sitting there playing a few Scribblenauts levels while wifey watched some of those picker / pawn shop shows. Its so handy that I can see myself buying future SP games on the U rather than PC.
Gabe a has a good write-up here. Its a much handier feature than I expected!
Scribblenauts is fun, but if kind of annoys me how the whole game takes place on the gamepad, you never really need to look at the tv ever, which I guess is good for the situation you describe, but for me it just feels like I may as well be playing it on a hand-held system.
Haven't had an opportunity to dig more into Zombi-U, but that really impressed me. I was pretty lukewarm about it and only really got it based on the good buzz it had been generating and cos people here recommended it, but I'm glad I did cos its really pretty damn cool.

I don't think scribblenauts would work well with the main gameplay and input on the TV rather than the gamepad, its far too driven by the stylus clicking on shit. I can't for the life of me think of a non-aggravating way to play the game with the TV as the main display?
Jeremiah Slaczka, Creative Director at Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell, told me that Unlimited began its life on Nintendo's previous machine. "We’d been developing Scribblenauts Unlimited for the Wii for awhile, but were seriously struggling with how to deal with typing without a peripheral," he said. "The GamePad totally mitigated that concern."
I am very rarely playing the Wii alone, so the TV being an echo of the gamepad works well for us, as everyone in the room can input on suggestions for objects etc. to solve puzzles and there's no information that lives solely on the gamepad or TV. Also makes it an excellent way to help with kid's spelling, you can just look up when they having trouble and correct the word from the kitchen etc.
Yeah I can't really think of a better way to do it either I guess, just felt a bit odd to me to sit down in front of the tv to play a game, and then not actually play it on the tv.
