Checked this out with the missus last night. I thought it was absolutely awesome, probably better than Casino Royale. It felt like a great blend of all of the grittiness they got right with Casino Royale, and the fun of classic the Bond films. Much better than Quantum of Solace (which I barely even remember anything about).
Anyone else see it yet?

casino royal was fucking awesome. i love that it had a large amount of poker in it, that wasnt jazzed up or moofified. great action and story as well.

Yeah Skyfall is pretty bloody awesome. It feels like with Daniel Craig they've gone back to the classic Bond style and pulled back a lot on the over the top stupidity that started in the later Roger Moore years. Judi Dench is in this one more than previous outings and she also gave a great performance. Javier Bardem was revelling in the role as Bond villian. Craig is contracted for another two movies after this one - here begins another long wait!

I think the wait was longer than usual for this one cos didn't MGM almost go bankrupt and had to be bailed out in the middle of it all?
Anyway, yeah, going to hit up Gold Class for this on Sunday, looks awesome, looking forward to it!

QOS was a revenge film and it was a bit out of place compared to some of the other bond films. Casino Royale was amazeballs, can't wait to see skyfall.

i can +1 the skyfall fucking rules. it's not just the best bond movie, it's a really good movie by any standard. the characters are actually developed in this one, it's crazy. and the intro chase kicked so much ass. best movie i've seen in a while.

I didn't think it was as good as above.
I felt like it moved quite slow, and the plot was very easy too see through. I felt like I basically new what was going to happen before it unfolded. The character were developed well but there really didn't feel to be the "Twist" I was looking for.
I dunno, felt about a 6/10, but that is pretty good for most of the garbage that was been out lately.

I would have like a more out of Javier's character.
Dame Judi Dench was great as M as usual and Daniel Craig was good as well.
Weren't these new ones meant to be set before the first bond film or have I mixed myself up a bit?
The one liners make the movie.

Casino Royale was supposed to be like a reboot of sorts, since he wasn't a 00 agent at the beginning. Quantum of Solace picked up pretty much immediately where Casino Royale left off, and Skyfall is set later again. I guess you could say that Skyfall is set before the original films since:
Spoiler:It ends with a male M like in the original movies/books.
Casino Royale was also the first book.

So I watched this yesterday. I was very unimpressed. It isn't a Bond film without gadgets and the radio does not count as a gadget!
I also thought the ending was pretty average at best, I was expecting epic Bondness and was delivered a story about an old chick :/

Wasn't a bad movie. Were they implying that old lady M was Bonds mum with the cut to the grave stone and his mums name being Monique?
|
Man you people must have tiny attention spans! Movies don't go for 1.5 hours anymore unless they're something annoying like Cloverfield.
Usually I'm only happy for a movie to end after 1.5 hours if it's shit.

movie was bad. preferred the last two. would like a new bond already, not really a fan of the current one

Were they implying that old lady M was Bonds mum with the cut to the grave stone and his mums name being Monique? Nah, M is just a designation, the guy at the end was still M as well. I think it was just that M (the judi dench one) was like his mother cos he was an orphan and she kind of filled the mother shaped hole in his life I spose.

But the dudes name is Mallory, that's how I made the connection. If her name had an M, she'd be an M. Bonds mum was Monique. She also said something like "I'm glad I got one thing right".

Yeah, possibly, I dunno. I did feel like there was supposed to be some kind of revelation the viewer was meant to have when seeing the tombstones, cos the film did make a big deal out of showing them, but I never got the impression it was sposed to reveal it was M. I figured it was some reference back to a previous Bond movie that I wasn't smart enough to get or something. I always figured the M codename was just a rank thing, like the guy who is the quartermaster is Q, etc.

In Casino Royale Bond cheekily tells M that he has found out her real name. If she was actually his mother this wouldn't have been mentioned.

Gadgets are and always have been lame plot devices used to get Bond out of impossible situations in lieu of good writing and actual tension. I think Mendes was aggressively pointing this out by the blatant lack of gadgets in the film. Instead of Bond getting in to an impossible situation and hey-ho saving himself with some nature-defying gadget he creates actual tension and has the characters using their ingenuity to get out of situations like they did in the climax. That final scene reminded me a lot of the the final scene in Saving Private Ryan. The characters had very little to work with against a very equipped enemy and managed to come through while maintaining suspension of disbelief. Spoiler: well except for M of course
It would have been super-mega lame if instead of that final scene which I thought was brilliant we got Bond saving the day with some sort of sonic helicopter destroyer. There is no cleverness behind that and was a major trope of the pre-Casino Royale Bond era which is why I pretty much hated all of them. Goldeneye was okay I guess.

Did everyone complaining about the lack of gadgets not see Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace or something? Its not like the more back-to-basics, grounded Bond is a new concept for this movie or something. Everyones pointing it out like its something this movie decided to do to be different from all the others, but its been like that since they rebooted it with Daniel Craig, hardly a new thing. If anything, this movie had more gadgets (with the old Aston with machine guns and ejector seats) than the previous ones did.
But yeah, I agree with fpot, the over-reliance on gadgets was always the lamest part of Bond. Some of them were ok in a goofy 80's kind of way and worked for the era they were in (but having said, Roger Moore bond movies are by far my least favourite cos of all the camp and stupid gadgets), but I think this new Bond is by far the best iteration.
I didn't mind some of the Pierce Brosnan ones, but to me they always just felt like stupid popcorn action movies (not that theres anything wrong with a stupid popcorn action movie every now and then), and didn't feel much like Bond movies.

Looking back on the Pierce Brosnan era it's a little embarrassing. Nowhere near as bad as the later Moore efforts or Dalton of course, but I'd credit Brosnan only with reviving a great series and allowing it to slowly evolve away from the cold war plots and over the top gadgetry silliness.

Wtf is all this talk about M being Bond's mother. He never called her "mum," that's just what it sounds like when Poms say "ma'am."
Fpot nailed it. The only thing that makes gadgets cool is when they're used in clever ways. Most often than not though, they're just a Deus Ex Machina, which is just a symptom of piss-poor writing.
And anyone saying they liked the last two but Skyfall sucks because it had no gadgets obviously has a limited memory. What gadgets were in Casino Royale? A defibrillator in his car? Whoop-de-doo.
|
+1 for lame gadgets.
I still think that the early Connery Bonds are the best because they are light on gadgets.
Dr No, From Russia with Love and Thunderball are very low by comparison to the Moore or Brosnan films, and have pretty compelling stories by comparison. Well Thunderball to a lessor degree.
But yeah I think without Russia Bond is a hard one pin down, because the threats just don't stack up. Oh Noes a terrorist has 150 million dollars. Oh Noes a disaffected old agent has a personal vendetta against a member of staff.
Hardly world shattering shit. They are still enjoyable films but just seems in Connery's era there genuinely high stakes. Still I guess that is also a reflection of how the world has changed.
