A 3g model of the Nexus 7 has also been announced, but it doesn't seem to be available on the website yet. (Probably going to be available November 13th.)
Shipping cost from Google play store $19.99
For those waiting for the Nexus4 and Nexus 10, those devices will be available Nov 13.
Upgraded Nexus 7 looks great. Not sure about the Nexus 10. One ugly looking piece of shit if you ask me. But I suppose the specs are quite good. The phone is ugly as shit as well. The new Android updates look good though.
I just ordered 2 x 32Gb Nexus 7 from the play store for my older kids for xmas, little kids getting an ipad to share (seeing as how iOS is targeted at the 3-5yr old market)
Why not just get a Samsung 7 8gig and throw a 32gig SD card in it? I don't know how they compare but you can go in store and buy one of them now for $250.
The Nexus 10 seems to have a lot of non-screen real estate around the edges but it seems like it has a nice screen. There should be some nice price wars going on now that MS have hit the market. The Surface is already at a better price point at $499US for the 32gig.
All warranties are handled by Asus not Google. If you DSE or HN bought unit fucks up you go back to ASUS aswell.
Huh? Whoever sells it to you at retail is responsible for replacing busted units. They might try to fob you off to Asus (or you might choose to go down that route) but retailers are responsible for replacing products that don't work.

Yeah but after the first 14 days they just send the unit back to Asus and you wait same as everyone else.
The Nexus 10 seems to have a lot of non-screen real estate around the edges
The Nexus 10 is listed as a 16:10 10.055" screen which means its 216.6 x 135.3 mm , while the device itself is listed at 263.9 x 177.6 x 8.9 mm meaning the bezel when held in landscape is about 24mm on the left and right and 21mm on the top and bottom.
The ipad4 is listed as a 4:3 9.7" screen which means its 197.1 x 147.8mm, while the device itself is listed at 241.2 x 185.7 mm meaning the bezel when held in landscape is about 22mm on the left and right and 19mm on the top and bottom.
In other words, the bezel is 2mm extra on each side. Of course, the ipad bezel is already quite big.
I think the black bars at the top and bottom of screen (for the navigation and notification bars) make it seem worse than it is.
Just watched the youtube of the nexus 4. I take back what i said earlier, the phone is lots sexier than my galaxy nexus and the charging dock is really nice. damn you shiny things.
i think that was a big factor as to why google went with LG instead of samsung. Samsung really fucked up with the accessories for the GN (read: none provided at all months after launch at which point everyone stopped caring).
the price point is a huge winner. Unless you were an Apple fan (and can afford or even care about LTE) it would be hard for a neutral person to turn down a $400 price difference.
This seems like the only Nexus 4 thread and instead of pushing into Lumia 920 one I'll update here. New stock seems to have arrived, not sure how long it will last but both the 8GB and 16GB versions are available for purchase. Kind of sucks for me as I was planning on getting one but monitor decided to kill itself few days ago so no money.
Hopefully now that its back in stock it can stay like that until next week.
Went on sale 9AM. Didn't sell out in 20 minutes this time, so I managed to order one.
yay me.
I conferred with an android fanboi before jumping in as the mobile world conference is on at the end of February and that's where the S4 and stuff will be announced.
For the price though, this can't be beat. $419 delivered and on Telstra pre-paid at the moment, so my mobile service has never been cheaper and still on telstra.
Whats the deal with the phone costing more than a tablet?
besides the Nexus part, they're completely different.
Completely different components like Nexus 4 is made by tLG with Snapdragon CPU, Nexus 7 is ASUS with Tegra 3, Nexus 7 only has front facing camera whereas nexus 4 has two cameras that are better quality. Just go to tech specs to see the difference.
if you dont care for 4g the nexus is better than the s3 imo. mainly because you wont get bloated software and OTA updates of latest android, and not 5+ months after.
I've had mine on custom firmware since probably day 2 of ownership, so a CM10 variant... but the only problem mine has is where i dropped it at nando's from the waiting bench on to the hard tiles and cracked the screen lol. GG
Lots of people on wingepool complaining about the brick too, seemed like something a OTA update ruined for a big portion of people but it hasn't happened to me..
It looks like Google have already started shipping these out.
If you managed to snag one, you can track it via FedEx. In your receipt email, the numbers after the period in your order number is the FedEx reference number, put it here along with your post code to see the status (you need to set the country to Ausralia as well).
When will they be coming out with the 32gig version of the nexus 4, 16gig barely cuts it for me these days..Stoopid htc one x shit itself soon after my son drooled all over it and made it corrode on the inside with his venom.
never
whats taking up the space? i hope you dont say 12 gig of music/photos
why what's everyone doing these days to manage space on their phone?
Stop taking 500 pictures of themselves every 5 minutes?
He's right though, with so many apps getting up into normal PC program size lately, it seems devs have just gone nuts with HD graphics & whatever and forgot that people might want to install more than just THEIR app, even 16gig is too small.
Not to mention people with stock phones and all the bloated shit that comes with them (though I'm told the nexus ones don't have bloat).
As for me, I just back up pictures to the PC and delete them off the phone when there gets to be too many. Contacts are stored "in the clouds". Oh also I've set my camera to store pictures & videos on the external SD card by default, so whack a 32gig SD card in there and use it for nothing but pictures, videos and ringtones.
This nexus 4 does come with expandable storage right? that's one thing i found a bit annoying with the HTC One x, that and the lack of a removable battery.
Edit: no expandable storage and no removable battery, gah. Do i really have to wait for "The Next Nexus" to get hardware features that were available on phones from day dot?
True. I'm still a bit torn between getting the N4 and the S3.
S3 pros for me:
- Bigger internal memory with expandable storage - Removable battery - Better Battery life than the N4 (apparently, according to various reviews out there) - Bigger development community for custom roms etc - Slightly better camera quality
N4 pros for me:
- Price (though the S3 will have to get cheaper to compete with the N4, then there's the S4 on the horizon) - Pure 4.2 Google OS out of the box with OTA updates (not that of a big deal for a custom rommer i guess) - Wireless charging - Better build quality and looks sexy as hell
It's like I want the S3 due to its practicality so i think it'd be the smart choice but I like the Nexus 4 due to its Aesthetics for such a good price and i'm a sucker of a chump in the aesthetics department. I guess the N4 will only look as good as the cover that's on it but it's like I want the N4 to deceive me with its devlish looks! argh!
It is better to use cloud storage these days anyway, just in case your device gets lost/stolen.
Not if you don't have a data plan.
It's like I want the S3 due to its practicality so i think it's the smart choice
After all this SDS bullshit, with S3's dying after about 150 - 200 days, I sort of wish I'd bought something else. The trouble is it was the phone that had all the features I wanted. I almost got the HTC but like you, a lack of removable battery and external storage was the deal breaker.
Who doesn't have a data plan these days. If you don't then you shouldn't have a smart phone.
Also I loved my HTC One X, so much so that I even looked past the lack of expandable storage (coz 32 gig is heaps) and no removable battery, but as soon as a bit of moisture goes in you might as well dip it in green paint and call it gumby. I found that out the hard way after 6 months of use and $300 on repairs and now it shat itself beyond repair. I have no phone right now and need to get something (android) before i go overseas for a month at the end of feb. The N4 looks like a winner on the surface but the deeper I dig the more I hesitate in getting one. Other than that and the S3, nothing else interests me out there. Goodbye HTC. It was good while it lasted.
So I bit the bullet and bought a Nexus 10 from Kogan, should be here next week. Anyone know where to buy a decent case, similar to an otter box or something robust? I've tried ebay and le google, but most of the stuff is in the USA and won't post here. A brand that came up is Poetic but it seems there website is down or blocked to Australian IPs?
By the way Harvey Norman are selling the Google Nexus 4 for $496, $76 more than Google Play store (counting $20 shipping). Not bad considering you can pick it up straight away and you get local warranty and support. Tempting..

That's $76 you could spend on coke and hookers, not to mention whatever you spend on petrol to get to harveys.
I'd always buy local electronics goods though, just for the better warranty (i.e. not having to send it off in the mail to some random country myself).
Actually I just rang and they don't have em in stock, they're on back order at most stores and expecting stock in the next few days. Who knows when Google play store will stock em again. Plus unless you fly a jet to harvey's and have your own landing strip at the top of the shopping centre you shouldn't have to factor fuel costs, which i think goes for 100% of the population.. of the world.
Just a heads up for those who are interested in the N4 from HN, most HN stores are out of stock until March but Gladstone and Rockhampton stores have em in limited supply. I bit the bullet too and got my local store to contact Gladstone and they agreed to send it down here while they pay for the shipping costs. I was told I can expect to pick it up at the end of the week for 496. So if you're desperate like me give it a go. Works out well for me i think since i'll be overseas before stock arrives in March.
Tempting. I really wish the Nexus 4 had an SD card though.I like the fact it is a native google phone and get the updates quicker.
Just get an S3, root it, keep an eye on the firmware release pages at XDA and flash the latest from china or uk or whatever. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

This is sensible advice.
Here's how i got caught out with a work device:
I root all my owned devices, but work gave me one so i didn't do anything, left it locked and untouched. It had a chip on the screen from previous user but it didn't bother me.
Then an OTA update came and bricked the device. On any other device with an unlocked bootloader i could have fixed it, but because it was bricked i couldn't unlock the bootloader, so all i could do was flash a staging area on the phone which then just ignored the flash to ROM because it was locked.
The device was chipped probably because it was dropped so no warranty.
Lesson here is, just fucking root your devices. 99% of them you can go back to unrooted and locked or whatever if you have an issue that needs to be returned for. Far easier that way.
Dont get unlocking the bootloader and rooting mixed together. Quite different.
While rooting the phone might not be everyone's cup of tea everyone should unlock the bootloader upon getting their phone. Just because if you change your mind later on down the track itll result in a wipe of the phone to unlock it and to also help in situations like above.
If you're planning to use the phone for 2 years, then the N4 is likely going to be a whole lot more appealing software-wise in 2014 than the S3 will be.

If work gave it to you, wouldn't they just replace it and give you another one? Not sure why you'd even care what happens to a work phone? Unless you had to pay for it because they blamed you or something.
Thing is i already ordered one through Harvey Norman through another store but haven't paid for it yet. Do you think i should just cancel it before it arrives on Friday and order it online instead? it's not like they won't be able to sell it or anything..or is that a dog act?
I save $76 but could potentially receive it after i go oversea BUT I get it sooner through HN (and i won't look like a dog customer)
Someone advise me quick my moral compass is about to break! I hope it sells out in the next 5 minutes so i don't have go through this shit..
UNLESS I BUY ONE FROM GOOGLE JUST IN TIME AND SELL THE ONE FROM HN TO A FELLOW QGL CUSTOMER FOR COST PRICE AND EVERYONE IS HAPPY FUKK!
Thanks assholes I bit the bullet and bought one though payment is still pending and it says it will ship on the 22nd. Is that the same for anyone else?
Edit: oh well there you, same boat as you heardy but i think 1-2 weeks is being optimistic, more like 3 weeks til it arrivies according to what they're saying :(
I ordered mine last Thursday and it turned up on Monday arvo.
Here's my thoughts after a few days of using the Nexus after using a S3 for a few months.
The Nexus immediately felt heavier than my S3. Measured it on electric scales and it is 139 grams compared to 131 grams of the S3. I thought it was going to be 3grams difference and wouldn't really notice. It sounds like 8 grams wouldn't make a difference but it does. The Nexus has a noticeably more solid build.
The screen on the Nexus has about 1cm less height as the back/home buttons are on the screen whereas the S3 are not. Its pretty significant side by side. I prefer how the S3 has a physical button on the bottom of the phone to wake it up as this is handy when its placed on a desk. Its good having stock Android and no annoying Samsung crap that cannot be uninstalled, like the Music Hub that doesn't even work in Australia yet it randomly decides to attempt to login and reports "Doesn't work in Australia". But some things that are bundled with the S3 like the 50gig of Dropbox and the Samsung remote delete feature if you lose your phone are nice to have. I know you can get apps like Prey to do this but I think they have a monthly fee?
The removable battery and micro-sd support isn't an issue for me.
The S3 is the better phone but the prices reflect the differences very well ($400 16gb Nexus vs $500 S3). If you were upgrading from an older phone straight to a Nexus you'd be chuffed. But after using the S3 the little differences are annoying... feels like taking a slight step back instead of sideways.
But after using the S3 the little differences are annoying... feels like taking a slight step back instead of sideways.
I'm surprised you didnt mention the screen, which for the S3 - at least to my eyes - is much nicer than the N4.
Otherwise, I dont share your opinion. I tended to use the power button on the S3 to light the screen up anyway as my phone before the S3 did not have a physical home button either. Chances are you'll get used to it; once the phone is actually on I vastly prefer the on-screen buttons to the invisible menu and back buttons of the S3.
The S3 is better specced, but the N4 is the phone I prefer to use.
What aspect do you prefer about the S3 screen? The N4 feels nicer to the touch for me but I didn't mention it as I thought the S3 screen may be a bit dirty due to being a few months older.
You can set those invisible buttons on the S3 to stay on while the screen is on if the invisible thing bothers you. I will get used to it. Its just nice having the option on the S3. If I was to read something like that before hand on a review I would think the reviewer was being picky and ignore it.
How do you find the N4 for waking up? I went from a desire to an S3 and the S3 is lagged to all fuck. It takes like half a second between pressing the button and the screen responding, the desire was instant. I know it's only half a second but when you're used to instant, half a second seems like a lifetime. It's like going from an SSD back to a platter drive.
If work gave it to you, wouldn't they just replace it and give you another one? Not sure why you'd even care what happens to a work phone? Unless you had to pay for it because they blamed you or something.
Pretty much this. It's not a big company and i took responsibility that it got damaged (the crack). I'm also the sysadmin so I'm kind of reporting the issue to myself, it's hard for me to objectively say "Just give me a new one" and then feel like I'm not screwing the company lol.
It's currently in the manufactures hands, turns out they agree that the brick was their fault as the screen glass was only cracked and there's no damage, so i'm paying for the screen and they'll return it. Bad thing was either way i still needed a new work device and so i just replaced it out of my pocket..
BTW those that have a galaxy S3 i highly recommend getting one of those cheap extended batteries that replace the standard one. I am a heavy user and this is my latest screenshot.
man for the little amount of use my phone gets, with an extended battery I'd probably get 2 weeks out of it. I've just had a go at seeing how long I can make it last and I've just cracked 4 days on the standard battery. wifi + bluetooth + 3g were all turned on too, "power saving" is off. Like I said though, I'm a really light user. Does the extended battery fit in the standard slot? I've got a hard cover on my phone so if it doesn't, does it come with its own case to protect the phone?
If anything whoop has proven how pointless it is to bother playing switch on/switch off on your shit. leave your screen off for the extra 5 seconds that you'd take to change your settings and you're better off.
No I called the 1800 number but I bet it sends u to the USA on weekends here.... so I figured that part out. Still seriously annoyed about them not being able to give me a written quote...
no annoying Samsung crap that cannot be uninstalled,
eh L2 smartphone.. you can enable or disable any service you like with the s3 simply by going into apps in settings > all tab > select the service (music hub) > force stop > disable.
list of things disabled on my s3:
chaton
com.android.providers.partner......
music hub
s suggest
s voice
video hub
windy weather
yahoo finace
yahoo news
As for S3 lag with the home button I have never experienced this even with power saving mode on. I have had mine for 4 months are not one problem. Never once has been slow and I am yet to have an app other than toms hardware give me any greif.
It's not "slow" as such, like I said it's only about half a second, maybe only 250ms but when you're used to a phone that is instant, even the slightest delay is annoying.
As if just disable unwanted stuff, root the phone and uninstall it completely. You not only get rid of it from the apps drawer but you also gain some free space.
edit: Here's what I've deleted so far (I don't delete quite as much as others, some stuff I still use)

I was looking at the changelog of 4.2.2 today and stumbled onto something that might help you with that "sluggish" feel that you're talking about whoop.
First you need to go into Developer options. If you can't see developer options int he main settings menu then its because its been hidden at some point in the 4.1-4.2 release. To unhide it go to about phone and tap "Build Number" a few times, you will then get an on screen note to say "You're now a developer!"
So once you're in developer options. go to Window animation scale, Transition Animation scale and Animator duration scale. The default number for all 3 is 1x. You can set it to off or to 0.5 for a more snappy feel when pressing buttons.
Nope. Still a delay when waking the phone up. Also tapping build number gets me nothing, tapping android version gets me a jelly bean on the screen. Dev options have always been visible though. (I'm still on 4.1.2)
I think it's just a sleep vs hibernate kind of issue. Like if I leave the phone for a short period of time it's quite snappy, but if its been asleep for ages then it takes a while to respond. It must just be some kind of low power mode (happens even with the power saving option thing turned off).
I guess in the end it's probably better to have it do this and the battery to last me 4 days, unlike my HTC which was lucky to get 1 day out of it, using it the same way.
edit: Nothing demonstrates a demonstration like a demonstration video
have at it
p.s. not looking for a solution, just curious whether others have this same behaviour.
Just as fast if not quicker than my SGS2 with the latest AOKP rom. *shrug*
I believe this is a hardware thing. It's how long the screen takes from that deep sleep to get into a responsive state. I know mine does it on the latest AOKP (updated less than a week ago).
TBH, i never would have noticed had someone not told me "Hey have they fixed that" and then me from there on looking for it. I only even heard about it about 2 months ago.
It's hardly an issue tbh. Ideally it would be beyond instant, responsive before you can un-press the home button, but the 1500ms latency from sleep isn't a problem to me.
Just to shortcut the source video: This is whoop's video in stopframe image, the instant his finger presses the button to the instant it is on. Note that that each second is divided by 30ths in this timer for whatever reason, so the second time it takes eleven 30th's of a second to wake after it's not in deep sleep.

Well that's how my desire was. The screen was up before I'd even let go of the button and that's what my gripe is. When you're used to something that fast, it's like owning a Ferrari your entire life and then going out and buying a Commodore.
FWIW, ordered a Nexus 4 8GB on Feb 12 (Google's page listed a 3-4 week wait at the time of ordering), and got an email this morning (feb 18) saying it had shipped, with a Fed-ex tracking number.
Clicked the number to find out that it had already been in transit since Feb 14, and that it was on the truck for delivery to my door today. Six days all up, not too shabby.
That said, given that it was shipped from Hong Kong, and all of the invoicing comes from Google APAC, I have to wonder why on earth they need to charge us the 10% GST. Seems a little daft for a corp as big as Google, maybe it's because they want to provide local warranty and support, but I can't help but feel it's more just an excuse to regionalise the pricing.
I've got a 16 gig phone and if I didn't have an SD card in it, it would be full. I don't know how I would survive with only 8 gig and no external storage.
did u order an 8 or a 16 heardy and fixah? I ordered a 16 on feb 5, still nothing.
16 gig. Ordered on the same day and still nada as well. I'm really hoping i get it before the 25th. I need a phone to play with on the long plane trip to the Middle East. Either way, Allahu Akbar!
On a quick side note, the Nexus 7 Docking Station just came back into stock on the EU Asus sites, I don't know what that means for them being available in Aus but last time they went on sale over here they were sold out in a few hours.
normal sims can be cut down to micro size. just need a sharp knife. you cant cut down to nano is all because the chip itself is different in size. another great apple decision
I don't think I ever used the google contacts on my previous android phones, but I sync'd it before i fired up the new N4 alas the google contacts won't sync or haven't or I am doing it wrong.
I was hoping to copy contacts from phone to sim and then sim to phone on the new one, but the contacts in my s2 are on the phone and I can't see an option to do this either!
If you log into your google contacts in your browser and your contacts are there, theres no reason your N4 wouldnt have them unless you've turn sync off.
Did the contacts from your old phone definitely go to your Google contacts (contacts.google.com)? If they have then go to Settings on your N4, then to the Google account, tap on your account and make sure that Contacts is ticked, then go to the three dot menu and Sync Now.
If that doesn't work then something isn't working as it should, and it's probably easier to just go to the Play Store on your phone and search for something like "contact backup" to export to a file.
I highly recommend Unity Launcher that just came out. It adds the side bar that comes with ubuntu but can be accessed at all times (any app). just touch on the edge of the screen and swipe right. There's a free one to try out without the customisation.
After I got this infobox popup on my phone, and saw the privacy policy belongs to swiftkey, I refuse to ever touch swiftkey with a pole. I get that it would collect shit you type in SMS's, but also credit card numbers, your name, address, pretty much everything EXCEPT passwords? Ahahahha, no. Fuck that.
I also don't use the keyboard to which that infobox belongs (stock samsung keyboard, using swiftkey's prediction stuff).
I get that it would collect shit you type in SMS's, but also credit card numbers, your name, address, pretty much everything EXCEPT passwords? Ahahahha, no. Fuck that.
Uh, it's not like it can magically detect what is a password and what is a credit card number and ignore one and not the other.
The only thing it's saying there is that the keyboard won't use any of its fancy-pants functionality on password fields (as in the ones where the characters are concealed by dots/asterisks).
either way, enter your full name, billing address and credit card number and oh wait, now it's stored somewhere on the internet. Prime target for hackers. Yep, sure won't be any issues there no siree.
Isn't that the same privacy warning you get with every 3rd party keyboard?
Also I wasp laying with swiftkeyboard the other night and it had a niggiling bug where the space bar wouldnt input the predicted text. I did some searching and it seems like its been a problem for a long time.

it's funny how the extra info android gives you makes you paranoid. Every smartphone I've ever owned has done predictive spelling based on my previous use. That was the inconvenience of getting a new phone, waiting for it to learn all the obscenities.
If you had google backup on your last device (the cloud backup that happens to your google account) it should grab all your words automatically again..
I formatted my phone half a week ago as i went to the latest AOSP and was going to change some of my stuff, but within half an hour it had almost every setting including wifi network information...
I just recently pushed Cyanogenmod 10.0 onto my SGS 1, runs awesome. I was using AOKP prior to that.
I still can't find a setting to reduce WIFI power use. Like reduce the polling rate or turn it off when the phone is in sleep mode. Battery stats show wifi in use even when screen is off, grrr.
It probably does csirac. I just remember a setting that reduced my wifi power usuage, I think it was with AOKP.
What utility apps is everyone using?
I've got (all free)
Battery Monitor Widget <-- really good battery usuage stats and other stuff
Semaphore Kernal Manager <-- Lets you muck around with all sorts of stuff at the kernal level of your phone.
Theme Chooser <-- Basically an app that collates hundreds of themes from the app store and allows you to easily download them.
Boot Animations <-- same as above except for boot animations
Titanium Backup
