wow this will become a very one-sided topic i imagine.
but i'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that for some people, i can see how spirituality (NOT necessarily crazy christian or crazy mulim) would be more important than intelligence for some people.

Imagine the combination of the disregard for intelligence (ie ignorance is bliss) and the ability to assign your own tailored 'meaning-of-life' to your day to day life? That's about as much being out of it as you can be without drugs.

So I can see why it would be more important for some people.

What is meant by spiritual? Superstitious? I've never been quite sure what that word is supposed to mean, even when I was infused with the ghost of the holy spirit or whatever.

Spirituality is the concept of an ultimate or an alleged immaterial reality;[1] an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his/her being; or the "deepest values and meanings by which people live."[2] Spiritual practices, including meditation, prayer and contemplation, are intended to develop an individual's inner life. Spiritual experiences can include being connected to a larger reality, yielding a more comprehensive self; joining with other individuals or the human community; with nature or the cosmos; or with the divine realm.[3] Spirituality is often experienced as a source of inspiration or orientation in life.[4] It can encompass belief in immaterial realities or experiences of the immanent or transcendent nature of the world.

Spirituality is generally just wacky voodoo shit.

There needs to be a non-wacky term for self-realisation and understanding, actual enlightenment and emotional peace without the fucking stars and light and butterflies and unicorns.

References to concepts analogous to the qi taken to be the life-process or flow of energy that sustains living beings are found in many belief systems, especially in Asia

Nope, too wacky. Don't give me life-force energy flow bullshit, I'm talking about awareness of self, management of consciousness and emotional response.

I get that freaky voodoo visualisation helps people to get there but that's not what I'm looking for.

Kinda related, i did army reserves a while back and during initial training down in kapooka we had 2x days of compulsory religious stuff. I remember them saying that during WW1+2, POW survivors thanked religious beliefs as the #1 reason they were able to make it thru the shit they suffered. Assuming this is truth, i think this kind of relates back to the intelligence vs religion thing. I think many people need some sort of 'rules' to live their life by and feel lost without it.

Mythbusters did an episode recently where they looked @ the most efficient way to board an airplane. No rules method where there was no seating (apart from business class) and 'first in' policy was the fastest method to board the plane but had the a highest number of complaints which lead Adam to mention how interesting the human psychology is that humans like structure which i think relates to what religion offers.

Hogy isnt that considered a type of intelligence though.

I dont think you could in all honesty ask any black and white question about intelligence with being pretty specific about what kind of intelligence your talking about since there are many different types. I know a few people that are academically extremely intelligent but socially they are outright dumb cunts and thats being about as polite as you could be to describe them.

Some people for all the shit they know simply cant function in a group rendering any expertise they have utterly useless since they cant communicate. On the other side of the coin i have met a few people that were total duds with anything technical yet have a great capacity to bring out the best in people and get shit done.

Yeh there is a thing called emotional intelligence. I guess that's part of what I'm after, but also more of a mature life philosophy as well I guess? Intelligence to me implies being smart, whereas whatever a rational person considers spirituality would go in another direction and would very much belong in the arts portion of any campus.

We all know smart people who have no social graces etc yeh? Its Sunday arvo and I'm rambling so who the hell knows :p

You know the funny thing about opinion and democracy? It doesn't change facts because a majority say one thing or another.

Not quite sure what a sample of opinions of a subjective topic has to do with democracy, but whatever, point taken I guess!

Why does intelligence preclude mystery and wonder?

Because knowing how everything works takes the fun and mystery out of it.

Oh look there's some fancy lights in the sky

Yeah that's just caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere.

see? nothing's as fun when you know how it works.

I see your point whoop but i think thats more a case of just breaking something down to its nuts and bolts or over thinking something and not appreciating it for what it is. Without intelligence you wouldnt have the awareness to ponder the wonders of the universe to the point that they might aswell not even exist.

I am pretty sure the average reptile doesnt sit around gazing in wonderment over how blue the sky is or how awesome that lightning was a week ago. Fortunately for humans we are able to look at things with two sets of eyes one being the enquiring curiosity that we depend on to advance in the world and the other set allowing us to see things and marvel at them for their beauty without a need to know anymore about them than they are pleasurable to look at. Personally i think being able to do both is a true sign of intelligence.

what's science got to do with anything, did you misread the OP?

Spirituality is far more important. It's about being intouch with ones self. What is the point of being super intelligent if your are a cold empty husk of a man? some life that would be. With spirituality comes wisdom. With intelligence comes a greater ability to evaluate. choice is easy but its a retarded question to begin with.
