I have a three spare beta keys for anyone interested in having a crack at the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta. First three people to respond here can have one (note: you must have 100+ post count, sorry noobs).
I had a quick crack at it yesterday - it recaptures a lot of the original CS games but with all new shiny graphics and interfaces. It actually feels REALLY solid to play; I am not sure if I am misremembering oldschool CS or if it's just because my PC is much better than it was the last time I played a Source engine game, but it runs great and feels really fast and responsive, like it'll be great for competition gaming.
All the graphics and models have had a nice refresh; environments look great - the classic maps are all there, basically the same as they used to be (although I think de_dust has a new passageway coming up from the T spawn?). It was pretty weird playing, having not touched CS for several years, and being able to immediately recognise where I was and where I was supposed to go.
I've mostly been playing with bots - the bot AI is surprisingly good most of the time, at least for my skill level at CS (very low), so it makes for quite enjoyable experience.
zomg I'd love one! Did you ever give 1.6 a crack Trog, I mean when It still had servers... -.-, I'd be curious to check If It runs similiar to source than 1.6 or visa versa!
I played 1.6 for a while until it was replaced by Source. I was never that into CS that I could really tell the differences between 1.6 and CSS from a gameplay PoV. I enjoyed playing both (when noone was playing Q3 or a better game).
One thing I didn't mention was that (as usual) I HATE the multiplayer interface stuff. We messed around trying to get a game going with three of us and the lobby stuff didn't find us a server (maybe it isn't implemented or something). You can't easily just browse server, find server, join server like you could in the old days. I know it's made like that for noobs but fuck me I find it irritating.
Honestly I played 1.6 In my early highschool days and just couldn't make the switch, I found the source engine that ran css to be quite horrible, It ran okay I guess but I found the skill level to be far lower in the sense, You didn't require so much co-ordinated aim in source you had to just do a quick panic spray and somehow that turned Into a headshot? In 1.6 if you tried to spray for a headshot the probability of getting one was very low.

It does have a server browser. valve wouldn't be that silly. click 'community servers' or some shit (only played it once or twice).

much prefer dota2 i guess
yeh, it's just not the "default" though - you have to go through matchmaking services. It's possible it's just all broken / not finished at the moment (it is a beta) but I always found it a bit of a struggle in L4D trying to get into a game with the right # of slots etc. It's great when it all works, but when it doesn't work it just stops you getting into a game and playing.
Yeah in L4d I pretty much exclusively used my steam groups list to join servers. If you were on GA, 3FL etc lists it would show all the servers. Pretty stupid that it was the best way to join actually now I think about it.
d give it a go I haven't played cs really since 1.4-1.6 days
Source was a piece of crap imo, You didn't miss out on anything. If you played 1.3-1.6 you probably saw the peak of cs but I'm downloading CS:GO with an open mind and I guess we will see.
Got a beta key to this from steam somehow. I was never very good at CS back in the day and hated being one of the first killed then waiting til a new round. Thoroughly enjoying this beta so far.
Currently the game has a server browser within the game but playing with friends can be a bit hard until they introduce the friends lobby. A screenshot of that can be found here. Someone managed to get it slightly working. There's meant to be an absolute massive amount of updates coming soon. If none of you already knew or not I run my own website based on CS:GO but I'll only post with Trog's permission.
Speaking of Trog, I joined your game the other night on de_dust. I have one invite left for one of the AG vets, just hit me up, some of you already know how.
You can bring up the friends lobby by using: "gamemenucommand showjoinpartyui" without quotes in console.
looks like I'll be playing that tomorrow, gotta love Bank Holidays ;)
I doubt my PC will be able to run it, it's a few years old now...
E8400 (I think),GTS8800, 4gb ram
beast of a machine!@!! I don't even know if those specs are accurate, but I'll try to play it.... maybe I'll buy myself a new computer as a present to me for being awesome.

Yeh I thought that was you. After you killed me about 4 times in a row the game crashed (fortunately) so I wasn't embarrassed any further. I'm finding it to be REALLY flakey; it crashes at the drop of a hat for me. Maybe my video drivers are out of date or something, but even alt-tabbing sometimes will trigger a crash.
It takes a few days to get back into it.
Eventually you work out the goal of CS is to save up enough money to get the auto sniper and turn everyone on the other team into a massive sook.

Try upgrading your video drivers, I get the occasional crash but not as much as you. If you run the game in full screen window it might help. I use the following launch options - "-novid -sw -noborder" without quotes.

Not having played CS for longer than a few hours total I'm curious, what made Source crap compared to 1.3-1.6?
I played the fuck out of 1.6 and Source and they aren't remarkably different from eachother. It is just classic (and I mean classic) CS player whinging.
The fact that it wasn't a 100% carbon copy of 1.6 1.6 players are a bunch of whinging cunts tbh. Also, the fact that source no longer raped your eyes with potato resolution.
Obviously loved the no aim/no recoil required random headshots that came from spraying an entire clip around the map to land a headshot In source, Don't be mad because you couldn't hack It In the 1.6 environment which separated the baddies like yourself from the gamers with half a brain to improve :)
Also I wonder why 1.6 is still played competitively to this day with $1000's in prizes yet source isn't hmmmmm, Obviously because source was a better game.. see you in CS:GO
1.6 had As_oilrig and it was played. For that reason it is by far the better version.
That map had so much awesome that it was thought it couldn't be contained in the source engine. Not only that, people where going blind from overexposure to the awesomeness. As such it was generally decided that source not be built to withstand the immense power of as_oilrig.
There were other maps that came close to that level of awesome, they also were not included on the chance that it would give some people the notion to cast their blackmagic and port AS_oilrig to Source, thus endangering hundreds of thousands of players with the searing might of pure gameplay.

Ah CS, the original gaming community populated almost exclusively by shitcunts. Good to see times haven't changed!

It's because it is slightly different, and if there is anything sperglord CS players (and gamers in general really) cry and flail their little arms about, it's change.

LOL.
Both versions are the same. That is unless you spend your nights and weekends praccing so you can score that swell 1st prize mousepad at The Bunker. No one else gives a shit and we were happy to see the visuals get an update from vanilla cs.
CS was best in 1.3 when you weren't slowed after jumping. Any change that makes the game less skillful / noob friendly is a bad one from the competitive side of things.
Games that have the steepest learning curve are the best for competition, Quake for example.
At first I was really enjoying this but the more I think about it the more I think they've gone in the wrong direction. It really is an almost exact clone of CS gameplay. The changes are too subtle to get players like me back, I think - and unless they do a really big push to make this a solid competition engine (which, from the looks of the server side, they are not??!?? it has some dumbshit problems, though I'll hope it's just because it is in beta) I think it will just further fragment the competitive CS community.
I think they really needed to diverge the games a little with the addition of some new gameplay tactics. I was thinking about Urban Terror and True Combat and how awesome they were with its basic tacshooter gameplay but a few additional bells and whistles (like climbing fences, locational body damage, bandaging). A few new base gameplay features like that I think would have breathed some serious new life into it - but I'm now concerned that it is going to be the same old CS gameplay, just in a third iteration that the CS community are going to partially move to and/or bitch about not being as good as 1.6/CSS.

That's a little disappointing. Classic fans can be rabid, but as one myself, source just felt wrong. I would of spent well over a thousand hours playing classic CS but when source came out I just didn't feel it.
had a pretty fun game last night with trog and hardball i think. Takes a while to get use to the different hit boxes XD and the heroes walking around all the time is getting old =(
Loving that new terrorist pistol with 32 bullets. that thing fuckin owns
I think I'm going to be in the same boat as HeardY having not played much in the last few years, but I did use to play quite a bit of 1.6 so interested in giving this a go.
Anyone able to give me an invite? bikeseat5 on steam.
