StarCraft 2 and the NA region

So a lot of my mates prefer to play SC2 in the NA region. Unfortunately I can't seem to add the NA region. As I understand it, I get the following screen when logging into Battle.NET:

sc2-accounts.jpg

When I click 'add game' at the bottom I just get an error:

sc2-account-error.jpg

I have tried contacting support about this several times; each time I seem to get a different response about the problem, but now I'm finally getting a new answer - only I don't really understand it:
The system is designed so that if your account has been upgraded to a full version, then you cannot add a trial account. You have a fully upgraded version of SC2 on your account currently. This would prevent you from adding a starter edition.

You get 1 copy of SC2 per battle.net account.

If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to reopen the ticket or call us. Happy gaming!
Now, as I understand it, as an SEA SC2 person, I get a "free" NA version of the game as well so I can play in the NA region, right? I thought a "starter edition" was just a trial/demo version of the game that let you play a bit of SP or something. So I /think/ the support person and I are talking about two completely different things - but I'm not quite sure how I need to phrase a response because I don't really speak the lingo.

Any suggestions?

Have you tied changing the region in the game? You need to log in, then log out and the option is on the lower left.

Yeh; that option is not available for me (because it's not enabled in my battle.net account). I can't remember exactly what it does (I don't think the NA region is listed for me at all, it just has SEA) but I've tried that and it definitely doesn't present as a valid option.

I see, that's odd. Did you buy a boxed copy or the digital version? Mine came in a box and it's fine. Although I'm sure if that was the reason there would be many other people having this problem.

Do you have an authenticator? I haven't used one but it may be that it needs to be enabled for other regions.

I think you are gong to have to wait it out for Blizzard support on this one Trog, I had no issues when I clicked 'Add Game' for the NA version.

Activation Procedures
Once the new patch is available, you can log into the Battle.net Account Management at www.battle.net with your username and password.

After you have logged in, click “Account” in the upper left-hand corner of the site. Under “Your Game Accounts”, there will be an option to “Add Game” for the NA version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

To activate, just click “Add Game” and you will immediately have the NA license on your Battle.net Account.

The in-game region selector will be integrated into the StarCraft II client. You can choose which region to play in before logging into your Battle.net account.

IMPORTANT: Be advised that patching and maintenance takes place at different times in each region. As a result you might be temporarily unable to access SEA games if you download the latest patch by connecting to NA.

If you connect to the NA region with a new patch, you will be unable to play in SEA/ANZ until this region is updated to the new patch as well, typically a day later. Once all regions have been updated to the same patch this will no longer be an issue. Please take this into account when deciding when and where you'll play during patch days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Who is eligible to play on the North American servers? How much will this cost?
A: All players, including those in the regions of Hong Kong and Macau, who purchase the English Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand standard or Collector’s Edition of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will have the option of playing on the North American Battle.net servers in addition to the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand servers. The option to play on North American Battle.net servers will come at no additional cost to players who have purchased the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

Q: How will access to the North American servers be granted?
A: All players with a copy of the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand version will automatically gain the ability to access the North American servers -- this will be handled through Battle.net account management.

Q: What will happen with my Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand Battle.net account?
A: Once you get access to the North American Battle.net servers, you will have access to both regions for online play. You can choose which one to play on at any given time, and can switch back and forth at will.

Q: How will my friends list and rankings be handled?
A: All account-specific data, including friends lists, rankings, achievements, statistics, titles, and unlockable rewards, will be tracked separately for each region's Battle.net servers, and will not carry over between them.

Q: Will I be able to play on any of the other StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty regional servers?
A: No. Players who purchase the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand version of StarCraft II will have access to the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand and the North American Battle.net servers. No other multi-region play will be available at this time.

Thanks Mosfx, I hadn't seen that - I'll throw that in there. This is my third round w/ support; I gave up the previous two times because it seemed noone really bothered to understand the problem (I suspect they simply don't know SEA versions are entitled to play on NA) but I'm really keen to get it working this time so my mates stop bitching about having to play on SEA.

Yeah I haven't played much SC2 lately, SEA wait times are too long compared to the NA. Shame really I want to support the SEA server so Blizzard see a potential in the future.

Just need to add more mates to your bnet account. I still play regularly on sea with a few guys. Just add us from that old thread. I can't really check my bnet stuff easily from my tablet.

But yeah lots of good games are still happening on SEA, but the problem I have is just often playing against the same team up to 6 times in a row. Very often playing at least 3 isn't TOO bad if you just lost or just won, but when it's 6 times and you got smashed 100% of the time, you get a bit "ugh". :)

I sort of get the different server region for player/match-making type bsns, I really DON'T get the server region for map content etc, and frankly put.... that bugs me.
(Esp. when compared to the shit support (I get that they're very different areas within Blizz.) and gaming experience provided in Diablo 3. The required internet connection during play, and non-p2p game models (and by extension AH, and then RMAH) can all DIAF IMO.)

I'm super keen for HotS, SCII's SP campaign was my GOTY 2010 based purely on the experience the SP game portrayed.

EDIT: Keep us posted Trog, as I recall it, I jumped in and hit the 'add region' option as soon as it became available (for that space mod map type). I certainly had to probs doing it, and from memory managed it all via the website (not in-game until you wish to actually switch between regions @ login).

What happened to Blizzard introducing global play?

I think that wasn't ever really on the cards, i think they wanted global bnet integration.

What's incredibly stupid, and i mean beyond downsyndrome dumb, is that if you are idling in sc2 USW and your mate is on SEA, you cant see each other online.

If you are in WoW or D3 on any server, you can see them no matter if they're on a SEA or a USW server from starcraft 2. I don't know how this makes any sense. At all. So half the time i'm playing alone on usw and then later that night i'll find out friends are playing on sea and would have loved to team up but they didn't know that i was around.
