PC Gamer survey results on which franchises are getting better or worse are in. A little more detail at the provided link but the meat of it is below.  Other interesting facts
- There were a total of 101840 boxes ticked for “Getting Better,” or roughly 4.7 per voter.
- There were a total of 120415 boxes ticked for “Getting Worse,” or roughly 5.5 per voter.
- Overall, that makes about 17% more votes for “Getting Worse” than “Getting Better. Almost 22,000 unique responses. Only thing that surprised me was Command & Conquer being at the bottom, even under COD. Is no one pumped for Generals 2? Or do most consider Generals to be out side of the C&C world?

Haters gonna hate. I love all the C&C games. I've been playing a fair bit of RA3 in skirmish mode against the AI lately as a break from FPS's (modern warfare in particular, lolz). I lol'd @ the call of duty response, I bet whoever makes them won't change anything though.

I'm suprised so many voted Mass Effect as getting worse, I mean sure some people got their knickers in a knot over the ending, but the games still got significantly better as it went along.

Big surprise on sc2, the latest patch made it shitloads worse!
However i still admit i love sc2 versus sc1:bw/vanilla.

I haven't played for a while because my PC crapped itself and I'm using my even older one. What's wrong with the latest patch?
I've been playing Brood War on iCCup again and it is such a great game (der Captain Obvious). Where #2 has it over it though is in the late game. It's just so tight.
Really looking forward to the expansions.
Also LOL @ COD.

Yeah the latest patch was introducing their money system into SC2, it's a "arcade" which means its literally the same as the custom game but you can potentially sell maps there.
It seems to make no sense.
So to fit that in they reworked the interface which now makes everything messy and confusing.
Overall though the actual gameplay of sc2 is the same, so i keep playing :P

Pleased COD scored so badly but im sure thats from PC gamers, rather than the console noobs that love it. Surprised about hitman, i thought the latest one was fucking awesome. Think the splinter cell score is deserved - double agent and the latest were pretty meh IMO.

I think better or worse is such a polarising question that it isn't very valuable for meaningful statistics. It's like asking Black or White with no shades in-between you push people towards a choice they might realistically feel Beige or Grey about.

I've been playing F3 since the steam sale and am about to give it up, really not enjoying it. The engine was always shit, but the voice casting, the writing, most of the atmosphere, is just argh. Thankfully VATs combat is awesome with explodey sniping and stuff. Maybe New Vegas will be better though.
I'm unsure if I'd agree that Total War has been as good since Rome and Medieval 2.
Civ 5 had some improvements, but lost a lot in atmosphere and the feeling of playing a unique history/story rather than a resetting board game (no changes of leader avatars during ages, no real approach to the scenario as if they've just met for the first time, etc, it's the little things :'( ).

There is no grey, games either get better or worse with each iteration. CoD has most definitely got worse. Actually I now agree with the C&C getting worse one, the first couple had awesome maps for skirmish, generals I think has a couple but red alert 3's skirmish maps are rubbish.

I agree with the C&C, RA3 just wasn't as fun as prev games, and C&C4 was so terrible as to have almost been forgotten.
I think lots of people aren't aware of Generals 2 or have forgotten about it, I certainly did forget when voting.

Think the splinter cell score is deserved - double agent and the latest were pretty meh IMO. Yeah, but I guess thats where this sort of survey falls down, because whether a game is "good" or "bad" can at times be a very subjective thing. For example, I never really got big into Splinter Cells at the start when they were all really stealth based, but I really enjoyed Double Agent cos it mixed more action with the stealth, and I absolutely loved Conviction (even though it was a bit on the short side), and the new one they just announced at E3 looks even better imo. But the people who liked the original Splinter Cell stealth style gameplay hate the newer games and hate the new one thats been announced. I think in some cases its pretty cut and dry that the franchises got worse (like C&C), but in other cases its just that a franchise went in a different direction and people don't like the new direction.

The original splinter cells were kinda restrictive as they were pretty linear and stealth focussed however i thoroughly enjoyed em. I think the original was good, pandorra tomorrow was better and choas theory was stunning. Then double agent got muddled and conviction was quite dumbed down for consoles with auto aim and auto move from cover to cover. I can understand why some people might like the later versions but if you enjoyed the originals, i can see why the majority think the series is going downhill. Im surprised Diablo 3 got smashed so much. TBH i didnt enjoy it nearly as much as D2 and only played a few hours solo. Tried all heroes and thought they werent as good as D2 heroes and the spell variations seemed pretty meh to me. I was also surprised by Mass effect. I never liked the cover based, squad controlling and story focussed gameplay but for those that like that type of game i thought it was well received.

Not surprised in the slightest about C&C... was thinking about it staring at the C&C pack on Steam over the sale... It was all of the new C&C (read post Generals) games... the worst of them all. For the RTS from the company that birthed RTS as a genre, it is pitifully shit. Crysis comes as a shock to me, I thought Crysis 2 was an excellent game (for what it was) ok, not as 'open' as Crysis, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Though in their defence, the crazy Moira woman who was the worst is actually perhaps turning out to be a psychopath as the plot draws on.

I agree with the graph overall.
EA droped the ball with RA3 and C&C4, Generals 2 should be a good RTS. It may not be a real C&C or RA game but thats OK. We can only hope they make a decent C&C RA game in future. Mass effect 3 was alright but it still should have had more RPG in it. It was a great game up until the end, leaves a sour taste from such a great series.

why on earth is simcity/total war on there? those games aren't even out yet (and hitman as well?)
But generally agree. RA3 was worse than dog shit, cod and dragonage went downhill, and despite its some flaws in IMHO a lack of immersion and TESlore, i'm still stuck into skyrim..
Big surprise with mass effect 3 though. I suppose thats why they changed the ending, the community backlash must have been huge

Man, I thought the fallout 3 story was the worst piece of writing to be shat out of an A grade production house in decades. It made spiderman 3 look like a masterpiece. Clearly we can never be friends now.

I agree with that list. A lot of the games that were genre defining have really lost their way.
Looking forward to C&C Generals 2 as a resurrection!

Liam Fucking Nielsen is your dad, that makes Fallout 3 probably the best game of all time. Even that I thought was bad :P. His voice was way quieter than everybody else's, didn't seem to match the character at all (why was there even a british accent in post apocalyptic north america?) and his whole "wandering happy scientist" thing made no sense either... Where did he get educated? Why was he able to just go everywhere without getting killed? Why were the scientist women all walking around in heels in a wasteland? Argh!

I thought Fallout 3 was fantastic, ended up putting almost 200 hours into that game, still haven't tried New Vegas yet (even though I have it) cos I'm scared of the amount of time I'll end up spending on it :P

I am loving every second of new vegas so far, it's looking to be dangerous to productivity. When the game first opened up and asked if I wanted to play in hardcore mode where the character has to drink to stay alive, I knew that I was in love. The general atmosphere and music of it is already so much better, and I haven't even left the first town. Not to mention that the voice acting doesn't suck. :D

Fallout New Vegas had some of the original people who worked on Fallout 1&2 holding the reins. They managed to wrestle part of what made Fallout 1&2 awesome and shoehorn it into the atrocity that was Fallout 3. The result was a much, much better game over Fallout 3. It almost made the 1st person perspective doable.
LOL @ first person perspective to represent a role played character. 3rd person all the way for RPG's IMO.

Not being a FallOut fan, I liked both but NV was more playable and better overall for me. Total War has been great, those people that disliked it are those who did not like Empire and Napoleon. liam nielsen stared as Qui-Gon-Jin in SW:EP1.

I dunno, I think at times first person can be a more ideal perspective to play an RPG from, since its a role playing game, and if you're in first person you are actually inhabiting that character, you ARE that character, instead of just watching the character which detaches you from things to a certain degree.
Just depends on the sort of game I spose. I find games where you're sposed to be someone else, like Mass Effect 3 where you aren't a character of your own invention you are Shepherd, work well from a third person perspective because its more like you're guiding that character through the story. But I think in games like Skyrim or Fallout 3 where you're more of a 'blank slate' character that you imprint yourself on and you are fully inhabiting that character, first person works good. Right the tool for the right job imo, everything has its place.
